The Hollows on TV?

Update:  More on this at a newer post  https://kimharrison.wordpress.com/2012/05/28/cw-passes-on-hollows-for-2012-2013-season/

If you’re on my FaceBook, you probably heard the news yesterday that there is a chance that the Hollows will be translated to the small screen.  i.e., a TV series.  (insert wild happy dance here)

I’ve been sitting on this news since last February, and now that the news has broken, I can talk about it!  (insert second wild happy dance)  I’m going to send you right to the site that explains who is chaperoning this opportunity and writing the pilot, (insert third wild happy dance) but much like the military, it is very much hurry up and wait at this point for me while things are still being settled.

It feels very fragile, much like Trent’s 20-5-1 screen saver and the words I live by, but on the other hand, this is a very real opportunity, and I am eager to see how it develops.  I have been in contact with Julie and Jordan a few times, and they seem very keen on using much of the elements that are mainstays in the books.  I’m hopeful that this two-way communication continues, as even though they are looking at what’s already on the page, it is hard to realize the depth of balance and counterbalance that I’ve put into play and why with just one look.

I’m still very invested in the series, and I am eager to see how the Hollows can be successfully translated to the small screen.  And it is a translation.  The two medias of paper and film have different requirements in the storytelling, and that has to be respected. THE STORY BEGINS . . .

I also have to show you a fabulous video interview I did with RT about the series as a whole and the newly released Hollows Insider.  You can see the madness of Comic Con New York in the background and find out why I go.  It is too much fun!  RT-Hollows Insider Give-Away  They are also giving away a copy of the Hollows Insider, so go check it out.

Lastly . . .  I have pictures of the signing last night up at Schuler Books and Music.  It was a very busy day.  🙂  I will be in Ann Arbor on the first of November at Nicolas.

  2. WOW. Look at all the comments on the deadline.com piece about the Hollows! Go, Kim!! (Congratulations!)

  3. Wow! Thank you, guys. I really appreciate all the positive voices out there. To say that I’m excited about the opportunity would be an understatement, and when I have more to tell, I will sing it from the rooftops. 🙂

I wish I could acknowledge everyone’s comments individually, but rest assured that I’ve read them all and that I HEAR YOU. 🙂

  4. Amy

Omgosh Kim! That’s wonderful news! Congratulations!!! E-hugs & kisses from ny 🙂

  5. how freakin awesome would that be?!?! Obviously, if it was written well and stuck close to the series, I’d watch it 😀

  6. Angie

Congratulations Kim! I have been waiting for this to happen since the first time I read Dead Witch Walking, which I stumbled on completely by accident wanting something new to read so I randomly picked off the shelf at Barnes and Noble!

p.s. If they need someone adorable in their cast, I’m right here 😀

p.p.s oh and I hope you will be making a cameo appearance like Stephen King and V.C. Andrews have!

  7. Jenn

    Good Morning Kim!

Congrats! I am very excited for you (crazy happy dance inserted here). I hope it all comes to pass for you very soon! I think it will be very cool to see it on the screne. Good luck!

    Hey Kim,

congrats. For me, my unimportant, personal opinion, it had been always impossible, to put the Hollows on screen. Also, because I wasn`t sure, if really anybody could play that good human or good inlander beings/characters in a movie. Kind of scared, of gettin`a superficial, hollywood movie.
I`m also an actress, and had been a lot on movie sets, so I don`t know, if they`re intelligent enough to realize it, lol. 😉 Okay that was evil, but I`m in a funny mood right now. … Why … shouldn`t they?! 😉 Sorry. Nothing against the movie or you. It`s only sometimes people there take themselves so important, that you can burst out laughing sometimes. I`m sure it will be great. And in the end: it`s your story, and you will always do the right thing! I trust you! Best. Really, I love to see your books on screen, and must be amazing and the movie will be great!!

  9. Congrats Kim! I have high hopes that this will be a huge success. Is it too late to offer my services to be in the show?.. I wouldn’t mind being even an extra!.. just thought I’d throw that out there. LOL 🙂

Gary Castaldo I’m a big fan of your books, I would love to see a TV or Movie version of your books. Yet what I am scared about is to see something in the line of “The Dresden Files (TV series)” or “Kindred: The Embraced (TV Series)”. I disagree with you 100% that things must be different for TV/Movies then they are for Paper. “Dexter (TV series)” first season was very close to “Darkly Dreaming Dexter” with a few changes. The later seasons broke from the books and yet it ended up being better then the book in my opinion. Then there is “True Blood (TV series)”, it’s gotten so fare from the books I know people dropping watching it every season. It’s the people not in love with the book that has stayed. Then finally there are the two big ones. First in film, Harry Potter. The movies are true to the books proving it can be done. Next is the TV show, “Game of Thrones (TV series)”. Very good series that made me want to read the books. I did and found how wonderfully the first season followed the book. Was it 100%? No but it’s so close that you can argue it’s stayed true if not 100% to the words but to the essence. I wish you luck but I would rather see your books left as books then to be the new of “The Dresden Files (TV series)” or “Kindred: The Embraced (TV Series)”.

OMGs!! Congratulations!!! Really, wow, great! I think tv series would be lots better than a cinema movie. It has to be a long thing to contain everything the Hollows have to offer.

The change from paper to screen rarely (if ever) stays true to everything and, sometimes (if not always), disappoints. But, from my taste, “Song of Fire and Ice” is a great series and is bassed on books. So a cool thing can come from this. And, if done well, it can reach more people to share this wonderful world.

Nevertheless, I think “The Hollows” is so great that everything, even if it’s only remotely, bassed on them will be amazing.

    Big huggs from Spain!!

    Pi

  12. OMG I can’t wait I hope they chose an awesome and sexy cast 😀

  13. i wish you a big congrats! my only hope is that it is not massacred from your original wonderful stories. once it deviates too much (like true blood) i’m too disappointed to continue liking it. have been reading you for far too long to NOT be a little biased ehehehehe.

  14. As I am slightly looking forward to this, I hope that people can be fans of the books as well as the TV show. I love it when books that at first were never discovered, suddenly gain a tremendous amount of popularity. That has to make you feel good.
I think I will always love the books a tiny bit more though ; )
Congratulations on your success. Did you ever think that when you started writing, your books may appear on television one day?

  15. Wow that’s fantasic, huge congratulations! I don’t think the show can ever be as good as the books; but they will be a treat and a great way to welcome new people to The Hollows. Johnny-come-latelys; but better late than never!

  16. I’m happy for you, Kim, but I myself really dreaded this moment. I hate my favourite books being adapted to the screen. It kills everything that my imagination came up with while reading… Big hug from a slightly depressed Sabrina.

    • I agree with this : ) Whatever I see on that screen will never add up to what I picture in my head. Everyone has a different way of seeing it, and somehow I feel I will start seeing the actors in the books when I read them, instead of the people I imagine in my head.

    • I so agreee sabrina! i have such mixed emootions! in a way im eager to see the cast and story on tv –but if it follows the books and doenst have completlty differnt things. I have seen so many books on tv buthchered . And then there is i am so happy for kim that heer story is wanted hope she keeps enoguh control to not compromise her babies!!

  17. ooohhhh So Excited from the very first book I read!!! I thought it would make a wonderful series!!!I can hardly wait!!

  18. She-ra

EEEK! You have my loyal viewership, pledged in advance. May I also confess that I’ve always pictured the actress who plays Van Pelt on the Mentalist as Rachel. I don’t really watch the Mentalist, but I saw her once and the image stuck. So it will be interesting to see who is really cast in the part. The one part that scares me is the CW part. I *really* don’t want her to be a teenager.

Still totally looking forward to it!

  19. amazing news. this is one of my favorite book series. I hope you get some imput about it. and i hope they don’t ruin it because it will make me sad. =(

  20. Jade/Third Coast

Wow!! Congratulations! I can’t wait to see it. I am so excited about the possibility of seeing Rachel, Ivy, Jenks and Trent come to life. I hope they keep Jenks sexy, smart, sassy and sensible. Hopefully those who have been missing out on your storytelling will be able to see what they have been missing. Good luck!

  21. Heya Kim,
I saw your post yesterday and I thought like “Wooot?!” and my mom and I also did a little happy dance. That’s too cool and we are so lloking forward to see the Hollows translated to the screen.
Looking forward to get the Insider, have a great week’s end!
    Aimée

  22. It’s about friggin’ time is all I can say, Kim. Depending on who picks up the show, I may just have to subscribe to one of those pay channels. A big congratulations on this news.

Are you going to run a contest on who your fans think should play whom?

  23. Melissa

Congratulations! I have been blown away by this news since yesterday! I am excited & I will watch & it can be great if it is done the right way. Of course now I worry that it will be done oh so wrong & be screwed up. The CW is a good network though for shows that are young & hip which The Hollows will be. I am very addicted to The Vampire Diaries. I can’t wait to see who gets cast!

  24. jkh

Well, this is certainly a leap for you, Ms Kim. I’m doubtful that any TV show could capture the atmosphere of The Hollows (I’m a cynic about TV) but I will be hopeful. It will be a long time before we actually see anything. I just hope they don’t turn it into “Gidget Turns Witchlet” or some darn thing.

  25. Howdy ma’am,

The Insider is wonderful, I am loving it. Maybe the show’s producers should each get a copy. It could be very helpful for them.

I am so excited about your work possibly making it to TV. Hopefully, they will stay true to the characters form and looks. No one wants a blond Ivy for example.

Storylines are a different thing all together. The over all arc should be similar but they need to take the scenic route getting there so your many readers will enjoy it and not know everything that’s going to happen.

Like nearly ever other new poster here, one of my fist posts asked you if there are any plans on making a series about the Hollows for TV or film.

Now we have an answer. It is both exciting and a little worrisome. I’m hoping they do it right and it is carried for a long long time.

Maybe this will get you on Ellen. 🙂

    V^^^^V

  26. Congrats! This is great. Though I don’t like being a debbie downer, but if they do go ahead with the show it just makes me nervous on how they’ll portray certain things/cut things out/downplay other aspects.

Like the tension between Ivy and Rachel. will they cut that out completely? TV doesn’t have a great track record when it comes to displaying sexualities other that being straight. If CW orders a series from it, I hope Ivy is portrayed the way she is in the books. In any case, I’m so happy for you Kim! This is wonderful! It’ll definitely bring in new readers to the series!

  27. I have every book in the series so far, seeing it on tv would be a dream come true!!!!!

  28. Briana

I have to say good luck and I hope they do a wonderful job but that I wouldn’t watch it. Call me a purist but the books are too good and I really can’t see anyone making a series true to the stories. Look at what they did to True Blood. It’s a good show but ruins the books for me. So again I say good luck, and I’ll just continue to happily turn your pages.

  29. Dina

My feelings are a combo of elation and trepidation. While I started out being okay with the adaptation of True Blood, I came to hatehatehate it for the horrible morass that HBO made of Harris’s fabulous fictional world. I know, I know, she doesn’t seem to care what they’ve done, but I do.

I’d love to see all the characters of the Hollows personified, walking and quipping and slinking around, I just hope the creators respect the ‘verse and do it sufficient justice. *fingers and toes crossed*

  30. James R. Fox

Hi Ms. Kim-Its jim from Warren-I’m on from the rental office at my retirement village(Smudge is holding the staff at clawpoint)I am so glad you might be on t.v.I can’t wait!! If they remember to really follow the books it will be fab!! I’ll even watch!(I rarely watch anything except Discovery Channel)

  31. First I will say I am so happy for you KIm. i would love to see Hollows —but i have not had any good experiences with any of my favrite reads going on screen a few have bee watchable at best. I am eager to see what you have tho. good luck to you

  32. Michelle

I’m so excited! Please Please Please let it come true! Good luck.

  33. OMG… omg.

I’m so excited for you! That is terrific, thrilling, and terrifying news! It was only a matter of time of course but I think that it could be really neat. It’s so hard to tell though. HBO’s TrueBlood is so entertaining, but so far from what Charlaine Harris ever wrote; and yet Game of Thrones (through episode 6 at least) has been, for the most part true to form. TV is such a weird and wild media to translate a book into.
If that 2 way communication stays open thought, I’ll be more excited than scared… by leaps and bounds because you never disappoint!

  34. Colleen Champagne

Great stories like yours need to be shared and this is a wonderful opportunity for you. Congrats! Just as an aside, it took me FOREVER to get over the fact that the HBO series True Blood is only a small hint of the books I love and I pray you have better luck with keeping control of the content of any TV series that may develop.

  35. Wow Kim!!! This is major! I hope it gets selected and we can see it thru. I’m really happy for you and all of us fans!!
I would love to see the hollows made a TV show, it was about time! LOL anyway Congrats.

as many said before I did have a few stressful days at work and this made me jump up and down and run to my hubby to tell him the news! he knows how much i love my books and the Hollows are amongst my very favorites.

Way to go! ps. sorry I’ve been absent! I’ve been working myself dead!
    Flo.

  36. This is the best news I’ve gotten all day! Ever since I read the books I thought they would translate amazingly onto the TV!!! I just hope a GREAT station takes it on. Hopefully not NBC since they canceled “The Event” after the first season! They tend to kill shows off too quickly. HBO or SciFy would be legit though!

Can’t wait to hear more. I LOVE the hollows and am always recommending it to my friends <3.

  37. I am super excited for you! I can’t wait to watch it. That must be exciting and nerve wracking to have your characters up there on the small screen for the world to see. Cupcake happy dances.

    ~Suzi

  38. Marsha

This is very exciting news! I look forward to seeing the series if it comes to light, but man, if you thought it was hard coming up with liknesses for the graphic novel, I can’t imagine having to pick actors for the screen version. I hope you have a great deal of involvement.

  39. Diva

Congrats Kim! This is indeed awesome news. Are they aiming to have something ready in time for this pilot season? I can’t wait to track all the casting news. 🙂

  40. OMG OMG OMG!!! that is so cool! congrats. Happy Snoopy Dance!

  41. Congrats!!! I’m soooo excited! I can’t wait to see your books put on the tv screen! Your books definately deserve to go to tv! It will be my “MUST WATCH” show for sure!

  42. Congratulations!!! I’m really hoping for the best! This would actually cause me to start watching T.V. again. I think Rachel and the Hollows would work out great on the small screen…as long as you have some sort of control.

  43. Sara

Congrats! This is a big deal! 😀 I’m exceedingly happy for you, can’t even imagine what kind of bubbly air your house must’ve had since February!

  44. Very Excited for you and us (the readers)!! Nicely Done Kim!!

  45. SUPERCONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!! I cant wait to see this as a show, ive read all of The Hollows books multiple times. They are my fallback, im out of books reads. This is amazing!!

  46. Jennifer S

Congratulations! If this does work out, I am adding it to my “must watch” list. I love your Hollows series.

Thanks for the update and the entertainment 🙂
    Jennifer S

  47. SiSi

If I didn’t have an injured shoulder, I’d be doing a wild happy dance as well! What exciting news. Of course, now we all have to practice our calm patient dance . . . In the meantime, I’m looking forward to your signing at Nicola’s next week. I can probably be patient for that long, especially since my copy of The Hollows Insider should be arriving today!

  48. this is so amazing i can’t wait to see what the TV show will be like!!!!

  49. Kay

Very cool! Congrats! Can’t wait to see it on the screen!

  50. *extremely wide dopey grin firmly in place….check*
From my first reading of “Dead Witch Walking”, I have been completely enthralled with Rachel’s world and await each new installment with near religious fervor (ok, I don’t drool, but it’s close). I once even went so far as to build Rachel and Ivy’s church in SecondLife, complete with bell tower, roll-top desk housing pixys and cemetary out back. I will gleefully follow the progression of the series, while refraining from joining the masses spamming their ideas on who should portray what characters. Best of luck to you and many thanks for sharing The Hollows and your world.

  51. Avanthi B

    Soooooooo excited!! 😀

  52. What great news!! My daughter, who loves your books as well, and I were just talking about potential actors to play the different roles. Hope you work it out to maintain control over content to keep all of us Hollows fans happy. 🙂 We’ll be glued to the tube waiting for it to appear. Glad I just ordered the DVR on my tv!!

  53. Judi Spinetti

I only hope they stay true to YOUR books, unlike True Blood did to the Harris books. it would be a major disappointment for them to add a bunch of stuff that doesn’t follow your story lines.
I realize they may need to add things to make it right for their vision as a t.v. series, but it would be a total shame to lose the heart of your books to make it commercially acceptable. I’d rather just continue to read the books than see it bastardized to play to the masses.

  54. Vanessa

    EXCITED!!!
    A t.v. series?! It’ll be awesome.
New favorite show in the making 🙂
You, Kim, just ultimately made my day ten times better!

  55. I haven’t commented in a while (lurker, lurker alert!)
but, I would just firstly like to say that I have not yet abandoned you or the series and secondly, I am really very happy for you about the series. 🙂 I know it’s something you’ve said you won’t spurn when it comes your way (ie – YES YES YES!) lol.
🙂 Glad to hear that things are going well. All is well here, horses fine. We have a new addition to the family – a miniature stallion who showed up out of the blue and is yet unclaimed. He’s about as big as a small German Shepard dog…
    Hope you are well ma’am,
    Alyss

  56. noraadrienne

Love It!!!! I can’t wait to see it on the CW which is a local station here in NYC. Mazel Tov and many more years of success.

  57. Thank you for answering my question more fully. *Shakes head, like pulling teeth from a healthy skull*

Really good Luck maintaining some control. I know LKH never did make it to small screen (I’m think’n not such a bad thing) and Ms. Harris has done very well. The Hollows deserves a small screen interpretation that stays true to your vision, not someone elses. Then it wouldn’t be the hollows!

    • There was a LKH tv series in development 2 years ago but it didn’t make it to the small screen.(it sure would have been interesting, right?)

  58. heidi

im sooooo happy and excited for you congrats! i cant wait to see your amazing books translated to the tv screen! i just hope they dont “improve” too much on your work 🙂

  59. Oh please, please, please let it be so! *iinserts happy dance of her own*! As an author, I couldn’t be more pleased to hear such great news. And as a fan of the series, I am over the moon!

    YAY!!!!

(And poor you, having to sit on this since FEBRUARY! Oy.)

  60. I think my excited Squueeeeee! Echoed outside through my open window. Lol. Hoping it goes through and I think that a tv series would be a better outlet than a major movie. The series can encompass more – in my opinion anyway.

    Congrats! 🙂

  61. 😎 You’re going to hear this a lot today: Congratulations! Your success is hard earned and very well deserved. I admire the heck out of you. Looking forward to reading THE INSIDER(I don’t have it in my hands yet). I know there is a long gestation period for developing tv shows, but I’m excited for you, the fans, and for ME!(laugh) I love scripted television. There are over 30 genre shows(SciFi/Fantasy) on tv, but really no UrbanFantasy. The closest is a Canadian show called LOST GIRL(set to premiere on Syfy in America this winter/interesting note:it was previously rumored to premiere on the CW…interesting). With police procedurals dominating the television landscape for the last 15 years, Urban Fantasy is a natural transition for the general tv viewer. Anyhoo–CONGRATULATIONS!!!

  62. MelanieS

Keeping my fingers crossed for you. I think a TV show has a lot of potential as long as most of the fans can separate the show from the books.

I have to ask, do you ever get over to the Grand Rapids area?

I wanted to come to your signing in Lansing but my check didn’t come. Grr! No money, no gas, no Lansing. *pout*

  63. Indy

OMG!!! I am doing my very own happy dance. I’ve had a couple of very sad & stressful days, and this puts a huge smile on my face. I can’t wait to see which actors or actresses would be involved. How much input will you get in the series?~Indy

  64. Lesley

This is seriously the most awesome news. I simply can’t imagine how amazingly exciting it must be to see your work being adapted for TV. Have you seen the pilot script yet? Will you get any input on it? So awesome. This news has made my week!
