Just a tad overwhelmed. . . ;-)

Dudes.  😉  I can not believe the response I got yesterday after breaking the news about the graphic novels.  You guys are the best!  (Happy sigh)  It will be a prequel of the year where Ivy and Rachel worked together at the I.S.  from Ivy’s point of view.  I wanted the chance to see Ivy go from flat-out disappointment,to grudging respect, to an unlooked for love.  I wanted the chance to see more of the vampire politics.  I wanted to see something more comfortable and concreate in terms of crimes solved, but more complex in regards to personal relationships.  We’ll see if I can swing it.  I’m game.

If everything goes well, I think we’re looking at a fall 2010 release, which is fantastically quick in the literary time line.  I do have approval for the artist, and I hope I can have a close relationship with whoever it is without stepping on his or her creative toes.  This is the first time I will be sharing creative space with someone, and I respect their need to make it his or hers as well.  I just hope that you guys, the readers understand that too.  There is no way that we are going to be able to match everyone’s ideas of what the characters look like, because everyone has different ideas and I’ve not yet been able to get a hold of Dr. Who’s psychic paper. (grin)

So today I’m settling in to work on a light brush through Hollows book eight, BLACK MAGIC SANCTION, before it goes to copy edit.  And then it’s back to the graphic novel.  Should be a busy couple of weeks . . .

I just ran into your novels at Barnes and Noble (literally, quite embarassing actually) and could not put them down! Three days and about 40 dollars later I can now say I am a fan (and quite broke for a student haha…).

Anyhow this exciting news of a graphic novel is just amazing (though I was convinced it’d be a Dark Horse publishing, cuz you know, they usually deal with the dark and supernatural, but guess not!) so my question is, when the books are available, will they be available in comic book store locations or other retail locations(such as B&N, Borders, etc…)?

I know its probably way too early to know, but when you get a heads up, it’d be great to know where I should be looking for these awesome little things in 2010!

    Thanks

    • Hi, Liz.

Cool! (grin) I’m really glad that you’re enjoying them so much! Writing them is too much fun. The graphic novel is adding spice to my day, too, so I’m anxious to see what they look like. It’s going to be an experience seeing these come to life. I can’t WAIT!! (grin) You’re right that it’s too early to know where to look for them, but the same people who are doing mine have done Jim Butcher’s, so if you find his on the shelf, mine will probably be there too.

I don’t think I have ever read a graphic novel before. I’m such a fan of your series I’m going to have to pick this one up and try it. I love Ivy as much as I do Rachel, so I’m really looking forward to this. Thanks.

    Hi Kim
I just found out about your graphic novel!!!I’m sooo excited for you and me as the reader!!I used to be a big comic collector but now just pick a few choice things here and there but I will deffintly get you graphc novel.I’m very curious to see your visual interpritaion of the gang!
Lots of luck and have fun!!

  4. Gail Siuba

Hi Kim, Glad to see you back from your vacation, from your notes and pictures it looks like you had a great time with family and a little exploring. I’ve been offline for a few days, so I was so shocked and happy about the upcoming graphic novel! What a treat it will be for us readers and I think for you as well 🙂 I hadn’t been a comic book follower since grade school. Then I found Laurel K Hamilton and Jim Butcher had put their books into the comic genre. I’m now collecting several series! They’re addictive! The artist for JB and LKH are very detailed and they come very close to what I picture in my head for the characters. I do believe that Kelley Armstrong is still working on a graphic novel for her Women of the Otherworld series and Patricia Briggs has a series on Mercy Thompson. I was so surprised at the detail and the far reach of the comic book world. I hope you have fun with it. Have a good weekend. Gail/St. John, IN

    • Hi, Gail.

Fun is right. The chance to develop different creative muscles is an absolute joy, and I was delighted to try my hand at scripting. I think it’s going to be a blast, and I can’t wait to get back to it. You have a great weekend, too!

  5. heidi

ok i so don’t read graphic novels but imma have to start now apparently lol I’m absolutely addicted to the series even if it is entirely frustrating when the characters don’t do what I want..rachel and ivy should get to make out hard core at least once lol I mean come on 😉 but i think it being done from ivy’s perspective is awesome i often wonder just what goes on in her head…and maybe I’m just blind and blonde but i cant find anything about the next hollows book…aside from the name of it that is…

    • Hi, Heidi.

Next Hollows is late February, 2010, right on schedule. I’m not promoting it yet because I’ve got a few things between now and then, and only so much space on the website.

I’m starting to get excited about Ivy’s POV, myself. I thought long and hard before deciding to do it this way, but the benefits are huge.

      –Kim

  6. Chrisy

Yeah! I so love reading from Ivys point of view! But how can you write how she falls in love with Rachel and still say you don’t think they will end up together? Don’t ya feel at least a little guilty? (grin) Just a little? A tiny tiny little? 😀

Oh and with the drawing thing… I can draw! I didn’t say I can’t just that I can’t challenge the other artists for the rights for your graphic novel. – Chrisy

    • Hi, Chrisy. Feel guilty over Ivy’s broken heart? Heck no! (grin) She’s my tragic character. I’m still working on her Hapyy Ever-After, though. She deserves it.

  7. Kira

also, in the comics, will you put Jenks in there? like, at the begining of the first hollows book in that pub? or is he not included in these comics?

  8. Brandi

Hi again Miss Kim! I had a question about The Hollows but Im not sure where to post questions other than here. If there is a specific place I will go there from now on!! My question is whether or not we see Jax and Nick in Sanction, or if they are further out that that? I was heart broken about Jax 😦

    • Kira

      me too….poor Jenks….

    • Hi, Brandi.

This is exactly where to post your questions. You asked if Jax and NIck will be in the next book? 😉 Maybe. (evil author laugh) I’m sorry! I just can’t say! But I will tell you that they will be back at some point. I’ve got a few things to say to Nick.

      –Kim

  9. Roger

Kim, Another mystery. I was looking at a website for another author. Saw a blurb for a new anthology. Checked a bookseller site, Sept 2009 release. Saw the cover. Can you comment? Tried to make this anonymous, just in case. Roger – Illinois

    • (Big Happy Grin) Hi Roger. My, aren’t you sharp! Yes, that’s me. I didn’t know it was coming out that soon! I have an original short vampire story in the upcoming MAMMOTH BOOK OF VAMPIRE ROMANCE 2 (under Trisha Telep.) It’s not Hollows related, and I had a blast with it. And for those who don’t know, it’s listed under my Dawn Cook name. I was so tickled when the publisher came to me, liking my Dawn Cook titles and thinking that I had the flexibility to write a good vampire story, too, that I had to do it.

Thank you for being so circumspect until you knew how I’d like to handle this, Roger. I REALLY appreciate it.

      –Kim/Dawn

    • Alright! Time to hear another voice. Boy, I’m talkative today!

You rock… Mention this again so the old folks with can’t remember Sh*t (CRS) can get on board…

  10. amanda

    Sounds cool!!!

So…not that I’m impatient or anything *big grin*, but will we have cover art for Black Magic Sanction soon?

    • Hi, Amanda.

Mmmm, there’s been some shake up with the cover art, so it might take longer than usual to get something out. A few big distributors didn’t like it, and since they have a big say in how well a book does, the publisher listens to them. The cover might change because someone didn’t like it. Soon as I know, I’ll pass it on. –Kim

  11. Bob J

    Dear Kim,

The new graphic novel of Ray and Ivy in the early days will be really cool. We might even get to see Ivy’s Mom, and the other scary people who were the mover and shakers before Ray and Ivy moved up. I hope that you can fit in some short stories at the end of the book on the ever-after. It would be great to hear how Neut became the last female demon, and what started the elf-demon war. The possible story lines to fill in the world history could keep you writing for the rest of your life. Like the big coming out party for all the people who share your world with humans. Talk about overwhelming, you made this opportunity, (or monster) so enjoy it, and enjoy it.

    Best Regards,

    Bob J.

    • Bob, you’re not kidding when you called the Hollows a monster. There is so much here that I could spend an entire career doing nothing but Hollows. Alas, I do have other ideas that I want to share and characters that don’t fit into the Hollows to bring you, so what will be, will be. 😉 –Kim

  12. Chastity

I was reading Dates From Hell again the other day and was going to ask if you planned to write something that would give us all the details of when Ivy and Rachel first met and worked together inside the I.S. and now I see that you plan to do just that via the graphic novel. Wow, that’s great!

Thanks for working so hard to bring us The Hollows and the characters that we love.

    • Hi, Chastity. I remember your post! Let me tell you it was hard not to tell you right then what was going on, but I was a good little author and kept my mouth shut. 😉 I hope you enjoy it. –Kim

    • Yeah, like you can’t keep a secret. *Looks for my Locus mag I really wanted you to sign, but one of the English profs stole it, since she wanted to get a better handle of Urban Fantasy…*

  13. lody

Hi! Wicked excited for the graphic novel! If possible could you do a drawing of the layout of the church? I never can picture it right, it would be so cool to see it! Can’t wait!

    • Hi, Lody.

      Thanks! I’m excited, too. 😉

You asked about a layout for the church? I had one somewhere . . . To be honest with you, I don’t have the time to find it, scan it, and post it right now, but if you remind me in a few weeks, I might. –Kim

    • lody

      😀 thanks!

  14. V^^^^V

    Howdy ma’am.

I’ll be looking forward to your GN release. I just wish it would come out before your next signing in Charlotte. 🙂 I’m going to love seeing the artists rendition of your characters, especially Jenks. 🙂

As the project progresses, do you think they will let you post some pictures of the art work?

I am just so very happy for you. 🙂

    V^^^^V

    • Hi, Vampy. I’m sure they will let me post a few pics. Now I’ve got something new to anticipate. 😉 This is going to be so much fun. I just wish I could get to it yet this week. (sigh) –Kim

  15. Mandy

Kim, I am so excited to hear about the upcoming graphic novel! Even more fascinated with Ivy’s point of view and the prequel story! I am curious, however, if you are planning a single graphic novel or if there will be a series of stories that are not simply graphic representations of the Hollows series. Eek! So thrilled about this! You’re wonderful! Best wishes!

    • Hi, Mandy. Thanks! I’m excited, too. It’s about time I get back to Ivy’s POV, hard as it’s going to be. As it sits right now, all graphic novels by me will be new stories, not retellings of the existing books. –Kim

  16. Everett Davenport

Wow! Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better. The wait for the next instalment has been delicious anticipation, and it just literally doubled. My cardiologist says my heart is healthy, I hope he is right. It will need to be tough to stand the strain. I like Ivy’s character almost as much as Rachel’s and a story line from her POV will be tasty indeed. Keep safe, Everett

    • Thanks, Everett! And good to know your heart is healthy! (grin) I’m so glad you’re enjoying my work. I can’t wait to see how this new venture goes myself. –Kim

  17. Did you really expect a reaction less welcome from your fans when we were practically begging for more Ivy? 🙂

So, Black Magic Sanction will be out before this graphic novel? Or later than that? Another question; do you know the artist who’s going to draw? Could we have a name so we can check to see his/her other works and get an idea? Forgive me if that’s too much to ask for, but i’m so excited! I’m sure you will do a splendid work.

    • Hi, Ezgi.

They are trying really hard to space the releases to not compete, so I’ve got BLACK MAGIC SANCTION in Feb/March, and then the graphic novel in the fall of 2010. The artist hasn’t been chosen yet. I think they are waiting for the script from me. I’ll let you know when I do! –Kim

  18. Hey Kim,

I am a quiet fan, but I very much look forward to the graphic novel and the rest of the hollow storyline unfolding!

    Thanks.

  19. Phil

I’m really getting ex-CITED, Kim!!! Sooooo great you’re doing the first year Rachel and Ivy worked together at the I.S.!!!! How did you guess that’s something i so often find myself musing about?!! (happy grin)
Ivy’s changing attitude and feelings about Rachel and Rachel’s about Ivy are so much of what makes the Hollows series so moving and wonderful. Oh, i’m guessing you had that figured out without MY help!! (grin)
I think you may turn me into a fan of graphic novels, Kim!
    Soooo awesome!!! ~Phil

    • Hi, Phil.

I’ve had a lot of readers ask about that first year together, so it was a natural step to write it. See! I do listen to you guys! I hope you give it a try. –Kim

  20. Tosha

Hey Kim! Very happy about the Hollows going graphic!!! Got some random questions. While Rachel and Trent were in the EA, what were the rest of the gang and Minias doing for about 8 hours? Did Minias treat Jenks as a person since rachel’s ticket to get out was used by him to pop out the EA? Will Ceri stay at Kealey’s or will she live with Quen? In DWW, how did Trent still Rachel’s pinkie ring (w/o getting caught)?

    • Hi, Tosha.

That’s a good question. I’m sure Quen did a lot of talking, and I hope he didn’t get himself into trouble. Eight hours with a demon is a long time. I’m leaving the question of that final ticket home open. It might not even matter since Minias is dead. Ceri is at Trent’s, actually, and Keasley has vanished since Rachel found out who he really is. I’m kind of uncomfortable about that. As for how Trent got Rachel’s ring? (grin) Not saying. . . . –Kim

  21. sondra

Hi Kim! oh that is so awesome about the graphic. awesome. yes you definitly got a few comments on it. *laugh* thumbs up. Sondra.

    • Hi, Sondra. I’m so looking forward to seeing it as a real book, I can’t wait. And yeah . . . I never expected that kind of response. Wow. –Kim

  22. Yorusoi

Ivy’s POV + Graphic Novel = DEFINITE WIN!!!!!!

Just another additon added to the “Infinite Number of Reasons to Why Kim Harrison is the Awesomesauce!” list! ^^

    Thanks a lot KH!

  23. webbjm

hey Kim, this is great news!! The Hollows will transition prefectly into this type of format and I can’t wait. I’ve only ever seen the work of my favorite authors in a graphic novel twice and that was David Gemmell (RIP) and R.A. Salvatore. Love the idea of a prequel too, so excited!! Hope you had a good vacation, I’ve been on my own the last week and have been playing catch up with the posts. Best of luck on this new endevor. ~ Justin, VA

P.S. Any plans on making it to VA this year?

    • Hi, Justin.

Thanks! I think it the story lends itself to a graphic novel, too. I just need to build my skill set a little. (Or a lot. We’ll see.)

I had a great vacation, thanks. Sounds like you did too. 😉 I won’t be able to make it to VA, no. I would have liked to have gotten to the VA festival of the book, but it’s right when the next Hollows comes out, and I have to keep that space open.

      –Kim

  24. Niki

    Hi Kim,
My you’re busy, anthology, copy edits, graphic novel, but at least it’s the excited productive kind.
Is the graphic novel plot that Ivy short story you were telling us about, or is that something different?
Congrats and smooth sailing on it all!

  25. A) Graphic novels are HOT.
    B) Most the kids around here would argue most vociferously if you call them comics. They do have their own artistic merit.

Of course most of your fans would go wild. Some may not, not wanting to have to recolor their fantasies when they see a portrayal of the characters that may not jive with the pictures. It happens with movies, and I know some people don’t care for audio books. You’ve noticed it when the voice changed.

Question, is this limited series, or could it continue AFTER Rachel’s HEA?

Mud is going to go psychic on you:
Because you and I were totally out of the demographic concerning gender reading sci fi as children, I suspect you were a tomboy.

You were probably a bit of a loner, comfortable in your own mind and your own world. Probably always had a pet, though maybe not always large. You liked working in the ground, and perhaps, like all kids feel, your parents didn’t quite get you.

End of psychic reading 🙂 Go to work, some of us need a fix from your imagination. I have the ability to do many things, but NOT write. Well, not fiction. How to train a dog in 30 seconds…maybe

Mud, looking forward to seeing what appears.

    • Hi, Mud.

It’s way too soon to speculate if this is going to go past Rachel’s HEA. Much of that is going to depend on the readership. So we’ll see.

As for the psychic reading? Yup, you got my bare bones pretty good. I think it’s pretty typical for a genre writer. I think about my agent sometimes and I laugh. We hardly talk, but he knows me very well because all us writers are the same.

      –Kim

  26. Yurri

More news about the graphic novel, yay!

Excited about the prequel idea (ever since reading garden of good/evil) I always wanted to read a story about their I.S. year, i think it’ll be great to see more about vamp politics and how ivy falls for rache (will we see rache knocking ivy out with some charms?)

    Looking forward to 2010!

    • Hi, Yurri. Thanks! I’m excited, too, and anxious to get back to it if these deadlines wouldn’t keep cropping up. Sheesh! I’ll be working in some heavy magic from Rachel, Yes. Should be fun to watch. 😉 –Kim

  27. Judi in NJ

OH KIM!!!! Yesterday’s news is just fan-damn-tastic!!! Great for you!!! Great for us!!! Behind you 100 % and wishing you ALL the BEST!!!! You get out there and rock it, girl!!! WoW!!!! CANNOT wait to see how it all comes out!!! Congratulations!!!! Judi in NJ 🙂

    • Phil

Wish i could say it that well !!!!

I think it’s awesome that Kim is so willing to share a few details of her coming storylines with us!

I keep picturing Ivy’s reaction at the end of the prequel when she found out about her new soon-to-be partner! Guess we’ll soon see in the graphic illustrations just how that first year played out!! WOW!! Can’t wait!!

    • Hi, Phil. I’m planning on picking up the story line that ended in DATES FROM HELL within a few days, so yes, we’re going to see just that. Can’t wait! –Kim

    • Judi, that is exactly how I feel. Thanks! –Kim

  28. I’m with UK Kate. I’m a comic book nerd too. I am soooo, excited. I collect comics! Now I can add your Hollows graphic novels! I am tickled pink that you’re using Ivy’s POV. Okay, Okay, I’m a black woman. So, I’m not really pink but you get the idea. (Grin)

    Melissa NC

    • (grin) I’m usually tickled three shades of leather, which can be just about anything, right? (grin again) I hope you like the graphic novel. I’m having a blast trying to script it out, and I hope it comes through okay. Look for it fall of 2010. –Kim

  29. Scott S, Clovis CA

We’re all excited that you’re still so jazzed about your characters and stoyline of the Hollows Series. So, therefore, we expect only the best from you (but no pressure . . .). Heh. Why not throw it open to the fans for their input as to whom they think look like the characters (actors / famous people)?
And it this the first time you’ve revealed the title of book 8?
    Good luck with it all.
    Scott S., Clovis, CA

    • Hi, Scott.
I am still excited about the Hollows, yes. I’ve got a couple of things I want to do . . . and it’s going to take a few books to get there. And now with the graphic novel, my interest has only grown.
Ask the readers for imput? There is a page here for just that. (grin)
The title for the next book sort of got out way early thanks to Amazon, so I can’t really say it’s the first time, but it’s my “official” announcement, yes.
      –Kim

  30. Miki

    Hey Kim,

It’s been a while since I’ve been through here~love the new layout! =) And congrats on the graphic novel. Sounds totally awesome with Ivy’s POV. Can’t wait for that and of course for the next Hollows book! =) Enjoy the rest of your week!

    Bright Blessings,
    Miki

    p.s.
also wanted to say what a great interview with Vicki Pettersson that you did! I was Miki from Vicki’s board that asked about the freaky men. lol 😉

    • Thanks, Miki! I’m liking the new Drama Box, too. I was worried that it was going to take me longer to update every day, but it’s not too bad.

I had the best time with Vicki. And thanks for your question!

      –Kim

  31. UK Kate

Hiya Kim, Wow! A graphic novel! That’s awesome! I am a comic book nerd, so I’m really looking forward to seeing what comes of that! Sounds like you had a wonderful vacation! I’ve been lurkin gon here recently, as I’ve been really busy with ‘proper work’ and my ‘writing work’. It’s coming along and I recently went to a writer’s convention in Harrogate, which was amazing! It’s my 3rd convention, but my first up there and woah! I met some big names and turned into an incomprehensible fangirl… *shakes head in disgust at herself* But I made some brilliant contacts, had much advice and encouragement given to me and came home with the biggest smile on my face ready to throw myself back into writing. Oh and thank you for your tips on what to wear for the party. It worked out really nicely! Hope all is well in the Harrison household. All the best, UK Kate 🙂

  32. Linda, Ireland

Wow, well impressed that ya responded to all the comments yesterday. Fair play! Please say the graphic novel will be available in the UK and Ireland at the same time as the states?!? Congrats on it anyways! Look forward to it 🙂

    • Hi, Linda. Yup, I set aside a couple of hours a day to you guys. 😉 I have no idea if they will be available, but there is always Amazon US. Soon as I know, I’ll post it, but it probably won’t be for months. –Kim

  33. Nick Goodrick

Hey Kim—-book number eights’ title “Black Magic Sanction” is that an Eastwood movie? It sounds like “The Eiger Sanction” but not sure if that is an Eastwood movie or not. —Nick

  34. Gothar

Miss a few days and they sneak in excitement, simply rude 🙂 Congrats on going graphic. Is there an option for future novels assuming sales go well?

    • Grin. Sorry, Gothar! Good news just can’t wait sometimes. There is an option for more, but I’m happy with waiting to see how the first couple go. –Kim

  35. Indy

Hi Kim!!! Sounds like an awesome story idea!!! Hmmm…I’ve been saying awesome a lot, but I’m just really excited about the graphic novel. More Ivy is always good, I have to admit I have a little literary crush on her. Don’t tell. 😉 Congrats again. Who will be publishing it?~Indy
