Nothing

I got nothing for you today.  Not a darn thing.  Just pushing through the work . . . waiting for the weekend.  I’m trying to take some time off next week to spend with family, which means I am putting in some very long days right now.  I got out of my office last night at nine, ate a burger, took a soak, and went to bed.  All I can say is it had better not rain next week when I spend those hours I’m storing away.  -ha!-

    Hi Kim,
Amusement at the short-sightedness & greed of amazon and the publishing industry. Amusement is a cognitive strategy- i’m a book junkie, particularly a Hollows junkie and being deprived of my fix did initially piss me off!! he antics of the publishing industry when it realises that it’s antagonized a very significant (tho small at the moment) chunk of consumers should be interesting to watch.
However, having to wait a week for the ebook version doesn’t seem too bad to me, compared to other scams like putting out substandard books just to make money. Not naming names, but certain best-sellers in fantasy would’ve benefited by taking a little more time and editing. Readers can get impatient & belligerent… hey, I do myself, BUT I’m all for writers publishing in their own time – truly good writing should be savoured like a chateau lafite, not gulped down like off-license plonk!

Hi Kim, I’m a big fan of The Hollows series and over the books have absoultely fallen in love with the characters. That leads me to a question that’s going to make me sound like a bit of a jerk, but I really don’t mean it that way. I’m just wondering, in light of what’s been happening to Rachel lately, if anything good is going happen to her soon. I’d just like to see her with a little bit of happiness here and there.

Anyway, I’m sorry if that sounded bad, because I really love the books and can’t wait for each succeeding book! Thank you so much for the pleasure I’ve gotten from them!

    • Hi, Barry. Yes, there are a lot of good things for Rachel, and she’s getting some of them. It’s just hard to see them because of the bad stuff. The thing is, as soon as she gets her happy ending, the series is over. I’m not there yet, but I’m working on it. I’m glad you’re enjoying the books. Thanks!

    Hi Kim,
I’ve been following the ebook wars with great amusement & interest. Not sure if you’re aware of this, but none of your books, even previously published ones are available on fictionwise – any comments? I did find your books on diesel, though. Also thought you might be happy to hear that you’re a hot item in india – there’s a shelf full of your books, except BMS (of course!). I just moved back home to madras (south india) from iowa city and heaved a huuuuuuuge sigh of relief to find your books here.
    Keep writing!
    Lavanya

    • Amusement, Lavaya? This issue has many people angry, and rightly so. There is a problem, and no data to chart what should be done.

As for my titles not being on fictionwise? Seems like I’e heard that recently. I don’t have an answer for you. I’ve not brought it up with my publisher. Sometimes they pull titles in preparation for an upcoming promotion. Lately, retailers pull titles to “punish” the publisher. If someone wants the book in e-format, there are places to legally get it, and I’m not going to get in a tizzy because someone is having issues I have no control over.

Very cool news on the India front. Very, very, cool.

Oh Lavanya, you are brilliant! Exactly that. In the past there were publishing houses that tanked because of shoddy paper and bindings.

It doesn’t seem to be a problem when books that are likely to be #1 due to past track records aren’t properly proofed. Bet I know which books you are discussing. It disgusts me (well, that and the topic on occasion, though it’s like a train wreck…) and will become a book I borrow rather than own. And worse, I have a big mouth, and review. I won’t give a bad review on any of the sellers, but if I don’t review a book on Goodreads that’s on my list, my friends note it.

      I have a few friends🙂

But with the consolidation and monopoly of the publishers, I wonder if the reader has much input. Hard NOT to put money down on books from authors we follow and are addicted to.

Could any of us resist the Hollows even if it became illegal? ;P
OK, censorship didn’t work, but if the publishers can get away with shoddy editing why not.

On the other hand, there is still craftsmanship involved in most of the really good books (and that includes all genres, Tall Dude covers the stuff I consider boring:)

It’s just some of the ones that have jumped the shark but still continue on, making money for all involved. gack.

  5. Hey Ms. Harrison!
I spend yesterday writing up a storm for my Script Frenzy. You need to basically work against 3.33 pages a day to get to 100. I did 14 yesterday, have already done 2 today.🙂 It’s a lot of fun, sort of frustrating because I don’t get the whole script thing in essence, but definitively something to look forward to when getting up in the morning. We had a kick off party and 7 people showed up! I was very proud of my home town.🙂

Interesting how some days just don’t have words associated with them.😉 Good luck with your hard work and the rewriting, how is that going? Can we put in requests? lol. How many rewrites do you do?
*looks around slyly and puts up a hint in the form of a poster*
R/I FOREVER!! From the RIHEA club. 😛

Hope you have a great day ma’am.🙂
    Alyssa

    • *looks below her and does a flying GLOMP onto Tiffany*
      Hi.

    • Tiffany

*grin* Hi Alyss! You have no idea how much I needed that right now🙂

PS – that move looked pretty bad ass with that bat cape of yours😉

    • Hi, Alyssa.
That’s great that you’re doing so well with the script! Keep it up! You asked how many rewrites? For an average book, I do a rough draft, then one to two revisions before my editor sees it. Then an revision for her, (sometimes two, but the second is very quick) Then there is the copy edit, and then page proofs. Each one is a top to bottom read through.

  6. Tiffany

    Hi Kim,

That’s quite a long day you put in! Sounds like you capped it off nicely. I hope you’re able to get some downtime this weekend – catch a movie or get some time your sunny garden – whatever shines on your batteries😉 (Speaking of your garden – nice picture yesterday!).

Here’s hoping your day is nice and productive so that you can take a break with a peaceful mind!
    Tiffany

  7. JanisHarrison

Ms Kim, you take care not to burn out, and enjoy every extra minute you’re “banking,” whether or not it’s sunny. I’m about to sow my “Angel” tomato seeds, hoping to be able to put them outside in May. Seattle weather is so fickle all April…
Phil, hon, are you a taxi driver or a contender for the Indy? Good grief, what a morning! You truly had a Ninja Thursday. Yeah, I know, the first thing you learn in Diabetes Ed is that anything that’s white isn’t good, and anything that tastes good is forbidden :-p However, the lowly sweet potato can be your new favorite “spud.” I have some good ideas for them.
And to everybody: Happy Easter, or spring equinox, or whatever.

    • Kylie Ru

      I keep forgetting it’s Thursday . . . well, it’s only Thursday for another 34 minutes.

    • mudepoz

Janis, since I think the only thing LEFT on my menu is the sweet tater, can you share?
Mud, who doesn’t have diabetes, or anything that SHE thinks should require only yams and water. Bleah.

    • Jenn

I’ll share! My two favourite things to do with them are this:
      1) bake it like you would a regular potato & put a little butter/margerine on it with cinamon. Yummy!
      2) Sweet Potato Fries! McCain has them frozen or make your own. For a dipping sauce instead of catchup mix mayo & currie together to taste. This is really good as well.
I have more stuff that I just kind of make up as I go, but these are my two standards for the sweet tater!
      Hope you enjoy them!

    • Thanks, Janis. I am actually very careful about making sure I take care of myself. This is all I got, and if I don’t take care of it, it’s going to fall apart. Well, fall apart faster than it is already. (laugh)

I hope you have a great time, too.

  8. mudepoz

Um, The other day 15 dozen fertilized eggs were lost. They were found taking the scenic route.
But, in honor of April Fool’s AND Easter…
I am going to be coloring 20 dozen fertilized eggs🙂
I think that should dazzle the students…

  9. Kylie Ru

Question, Kim-san. Since it’s 5 o’clock somew– wait, no, that’s not it. Since it’s always nighttime somewhere in the world, do demons sleep?

  10. lizzy

    Happy April fools day!

  11. Phil

Hi Kim-san. I have a feeling your nothing is busier than my nothing, but I hope you enjoy doin’ nothing and not have rain. Thank you for your answer to how you develop relationships in your writing. It was very insightful and helpful.

  12. Cathy

    Dear Kim,

Just wanted to add to the chorus of voices here about how fabulous BSM is! I have read the whole series through twice and have read the individual books countless times. It is torture to wait another year for the next installment. I grudgingly accept that you deserve a life outside of writing… sigh!

So much more I want to say, but I have to run. Thanks for the wild ride through the Hollows. Keep ’em coming.

    Best,
    Cathy

    • Thanks, Cathy! I really appreciate that. 😉 Unfortunately it really does take me that long to write and be comfortable with a new Hollows book. More on the way!

  13. Vampyre

    Howdy ma’am,

Hope you had a great day. I pulled prank on my poor sis in KY. I had er believing my ex-sister-in-law stole the title to my car and pawned it. Then my car was repocessed. There are many reasons she is an ex-sister-in-law. 🙂

I wanted to share this too.

    V^^^^V

    PS I hope that worked

  14. Jenn

    Happy April Fools Day, Kim.

So I heard that you’re weather all next week is supposed to be rain, followed by hail & a dash of snow! hehe!

If you believed that, I have swamp land in FLA to sell you!

Hope you have a fantastic time next week. You deserve it!

  15. Chris

This has been my April 1st. Got up late. Had to hurry #2 SON(autistic) to a functioning mode while writing #1 son a doctor’s excuse. Then got #2 dressed, #1 out the door. daughter to brush hair, #2 to take meds, found the 6 page diabetic paperwork my mom in law had buried, filled it out, got daughter out the door, took shower, got darling K and #2 in van, dropped him off A special school in neighboring district(found out he had early dismissal)–all previous occured within 45 minutes–,ran back to pick up mom in law and take her to airport to get on plane to see family in Boston(airport near state capitol–40 min each way),rushed dowtown to have diabetes screening and intake meeting,go pick up #2 son from school, get to pet store for dog/cat food & birthday gifts, drop off K and #2 son, rush to high school pick up #1 son and take downtown for His meeting w/counselor, rush back home to get daughter to take to same place for Her meeting w/counselor….it just turned early afternoon here!

    • Jenn

I gotta say Chris, your day has been a lot more hectic than mine, although I think mine’s been just as busy; we’re in OT again (rolls eyes). It’s go, go, go time here!

    • Chris

Just got back–stopped by our local B&N to pick up Madison Avery? book and while there chatted up the asst mgr about your book sales. It seems they would be quite pleased to have a “top of line author” (her words) in for a signing. It might be worth your rep’s while to check it out. I also picked up Patricia Briggs second Alpha & Omega novel.

    • Chris

Note about diabetes conversation….all of my comfort foods are GONE!!!! 😦

    • Holy Cow, Chris. That is one INTENSE morning. I hope you don’t have to do that every day. Wow!

  16. Chris

    Hey Jenn,
I’ve been to London,Ontario many times when I was younger. My aunt and uncle (since passed on) lived there with their 2 black scotties. My uncle and I would go golfing at every visit. Loved the area. If memory serves me I think we even attended a Tiger-Cats game.

    • Jenn

That’s great! I love this city, it’s big enough to have all the city benifits but not too big where you feel lost if you leave your area. I haven’t been to a Tiger-Cats game, we’re more of a hockey family…lol. Go Knights Go!
Golfing, ah yes…that’s my hubby’s summer past time…there are so many courses around here to choose from. Actually we went for a walk on the river trail near our house & found a frisbee golf course! I’m actually thinking of trying that out…it looks like fun!

    • Chris

The only thing I can really do with a frisbee is conk unsuspecting, inoccent bystanders on the head. :0

Dot your tees and cross your eyes
    april fools’ day is nice
damn , what rhymes with orange?

  18. Kylie Ru

deviantART has decided to play a prank on all of us deviants. They’ve changed our avatars and signatures. You either get Lady Gaga, Seeker, or Twilight. I would have LOVED Lady Gaga. Instead, I get the sparkly vampire. Sigh. So not cool.

I’ll be seeing my uncle, aunt, and brand new cousin tonight!

  19. Antonio Rich

I LOVE the idea of Rachel and Trent getting together. I think they are PERFECT for each other. Trent is gorgeous, and I really think he has a heart of gold, and would completely change his ways if he marries Rachel. I can’t wait for the roadtrip in Book 9 – I hope they make love in every rest area, every truck stop, every Waffle House parking lot from Cincinnati to San Francisco!…

APRIL FOOLS!!! APRIL FOOLS!!! APRIL FOOLS!!!

  20. Judi in NJ

Thinking groovy thoughts for sweet family-time! Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy! Happy Easter (to those who celebrate). Say “S’up?” to “Guy”!

  21. suzannelazear

Hi Kim! Are you making the fab breakfast for dinner (or something fun) for April fools day?

I still have to pack. The tot and I are off to AZ for a week to visit my day (who’s out of the hospital, yay). And go grocery shopping…I know from experiance the hubby gets grouchy when the tot and I leave without stocking the fridge. I have two Q&As to write for authors visiting the steamed blog before I leave. Whew. Oh, and Steampunkapalooza, a month of special gusts, prizes, and mayhem kicks off today on my grop blog with Gail Carriger (who’s so sweet. Actually, every author/artist/musician/whathaveyou that actually emailed me back has been so sweet. Maybe one day you’ll be inclined to write something Steampunk (burning bunnies? LOL) and then I can have you on. That would be super fab.)

Ok, enough babbling. I must get the tot to school.

    Have a great day!
    ~Suzi

    • marsha

I’m so glad to hear your father is doing better! Enjoy your time visiting with him.

    • suzannelazear

Thanks everyone. After all this Steampunkapalooza pre-planning, i need a break.🙂 Though I still have stuff to do while I’m gone since it just started. The tot is very much looking forward to being spoiled.

    • Jenn

I hope you have a great trip! Drive safe, we want you back in action soon!
      *sniff* we’ll miss you!!!!

    • suzannelazear

I’ll miss you all, too. I’ll be online a little, still have stuff going on with the steampunk blog, but my mom gets jealous of my computer, lol.

    • Chris

      Suzi,
I am soooo relieved your pa is out of the hospital. I have been praying for your whole family. and yes, we papa bears dont like unstocked pantries when fending for ourselves. lol Safe journey.

    • suzannelazear

I even bough him oreos. I’m such a nice wife.

    • Hi, Suzanne. Oh, Guy and I have a 20 year pact going to not prank each other, so it’s usually a very quiet April Fools. I hope your father is okay.

  22. mudepoz

Or. Love the books, Hate the wait?
    *My next bumper sticker.

  23. marsha

I will cross my fingers for you. Right now they are talking about the possibility of rain on Wednesday of next week, but most days are looking magnificent. I hope it all goes your way. Enjoy your family time, you have certainly earned it.

  24. A.N.

    Saludos Ms. Kim,
How are you? Happy April Fools’ day! Be good Evil Author (grin). Loved your book, hate Trent.
    Be Happy! A.N.

    • Antonio Rich

I love this post, A.N.🙂 It’s short and to the point. Like an old fashioned telegraph message one would see in a movie.

“Loved your book” (Stop) “Hate Trent” (Stop) “Be Happy! (Stop) A.N. (Stop)😉

    • SeattleRobin

Yay, another Trent basher! Antonio really had me worried he’d jumped ship earlier.

    • Hola, A.N! I’m glad you liked the latest book. Thanks! Have a great weekend!
