A Fistful of Charms (2006)It’s the fourth of my give-aways in conjunction with the Hollows Read Along. For A Few Demons More is officially  on sale today, but you still might find, A Fistful of Charms up there yet if you hurry. [click for links to multiple platforms]

To enter the contest for the prize pack, all you have to do is drop down to the comment box at the end of the page here and tell me if you think Nick truly loved Rachel–in as much as he can love a person–up until he found out the focus had been switched. (If you’ve not read the book, then tell me what you think of the cover.) Your post is your entry into the random drawing, so please comment only once–on your honor! I’ve heard it gets hard to enter from your phone after noon due to the number of entries, so be aware you might have to enter from a different device.

Prize pack contains a signed cover flat for Ever After, a hard cover copy of A Fistful of Charms, a hard cover copy of Into the Woods, a bunny pin, bus token, and one of Marshal’s warmth amulet freebies. Because of the rarity of the Fistful of Charms hard cover, I’m only able to offer three prize packs.

FOCPrizepack

Rules and Regs. I will open the page for comments Monday, 9:00 a.m. EST, and close it Tuesday 9:00 a.m. EST. I will then use a random number generator to choose the three winning commenters.

FOCprizepack2Stuff to know before commenting:

Guy will ship overseas, so international is okay.

Chances of winning are dependent on how many enter.

My decision is final, even if you quibble over it.

I will contact the winners Tuesday afternoon using the email address they used to comment with, so please check it in the next day or so. If you don’t respond to me by email by noon Friday (EST), I’m giving the prize pack to the runner up, also chosen by the random number generator. I’ve actually had this happen twice now, which is kind of a sad ratio, so please check your email if you enter.

Harper5bookSweeps

Few other things since I’ve got your ear.

It is the last day to enter the first of Harper’s two sweepstakes where they’re giving away signed copes of the first five books. Enter here.

gca_logo_nominee_smallUseIt’s also the last day to cast your vote in the final tier of the Goodreads reader choice awards. Ever After is a nominee in the paranormal fantasy genre! I am so jazzed about this as the readers are so very important to me, (even when we disagree over certain deaths or romantic paths.) Vote for EVER AFTER, vote for someone else, but vote. I’ve got a lot of friends in there, and it’s all good! (Paranormal Fantasy genre.)

FAFDMreadalongI’m starting For A Few Demons More tonight in the read-along. This is the first Hollows book that came out in hard cover, and I do believe one of my longest manuscripts before I started consciously trimming them back. You can take part here at the drama box, or at Goodreads where the threads of conversation tend to hang around a little longer. [click image to go to goodreads]

I think Nick cared for her but once he found out how powerful Rachel was, he used her to get what he wanted. I don’t think he’s capable of love because of his greed.

  2. Matthew tuite

Nick has been an arrogant little ….. Since the first time we met him. I don’t think that he could really love her. She was a way for him to gain more power and he knew that the way to keep her around was to use her emotionally.

  3. Samantha Shannon

Yes, I think Nick loved Rachel. But his love of treasures and theft was bigger

  4. Julie B.

I think Nick thought he loved Rachel, he was never right for her though. I really hated him and loved the way Rachel said his name :)

  5. Andy Santoro

    No, he didn’t.

  6. Mz. Smith

Nick was out foe self gain and Rachel was just another means to an end. Really sad that most of the men who come at her are only after what they can gain from her.

  7. Sabrina Reese

Nick is a total sociopath. I don’t think he has it in him to love. So, no, I don’t think he ever loved Rachel.

  8. No, I don’t think Nick ever loved Rachel. I think Rachel was a means to an end. He may have had a faint flicker of feeling for her, but it was overshadowed by his own greed.

  9. Katie Burns

I think nick never really loved Rachel. I think he loved the idea of Rachel

  10. tinytygress

Haven’t read this one yet but the cover is awesome and goes perfect with all the other covers. I have thoroughly enjoyed all the other books I have read in this series so I know I will love this one too!

  11. Dawn Collins

I think Nick loves Rachel in his own twisted way that he is capable of loving anyone!

  12. Jeannie

I think it was a love born of gratitude, his need for power overrode it hands down. :-(

  13. Brandi McWhirter

I love your books and I just got the outlaw demon wails so I can do the read along and yesterday was my birthday so that was one of my birthday presents the other was the Doctor Who 50th on Xbox tv what a birthday this year was

  14. Priscilla

I think he may have cared for her but never as much as himself… or money

  15. Vicki Anderson

Yes, he did in his own twisted way.

  16. Shonagh Henderson

Nick was Nothing but a self centered jerk that couldn’t think of anything but himself.

  17. Brittany Henderson

I think in the beginning Nick, in his own way, loved Rachel. Then I think too many things got in the way for it to work…

  18. michelle

I believe Nick loved her in his own way . Once you get past his love for power and himself.

  19. Rachel M

On some level he cared for her, but his own needs got in the way. His love for her was no match for his love for power.

  20. Martina Dallinger

    Hi there :-)
I think he thought he loved her – but it wasn’t real love like it should be. It was the semi-love he is able to. Nothing more. First he loves himself.
But I do really love the whole story <3

  21. I haven’t read this book yet, but I always hope in love, true love :)

  22. No, I don’t think he did. He may have thought he did once but his greed over shadowed everything he was and could have been.

  23. I think he loved her as much as Nick could experience love. With that being said, I don’t think he really knew what real love was because he was so driven by his desire and greed.

  24. Amanda

I think Nick “loved” Rachel as much as he could, and as long as it didn’t get in the way of his #1 Love – himself.

  25. lisa brown

I think Nick loved Rachael but not truly. If he had then he would’ve dampened his dark magic and realized that going after all demons instead of objectively would alienate Rachael

  26. Marthapao

I think he did love her in his own very limited way of loving a person.

  27. Nick loves power. He didn’t love her, he just wanted her for her power

  28. Krystle Streight

I believe he did love her but I don’t think he was ‘in’ love with her

  29. Sonia D.

Hmm, he might feel something for her but to call it love? I don´t think so..

  30. Tim

    Yeah, I reckon he did.

  31. Gina Arnett

Sadly, I don’t think Nick capable of love. He loved the idea of what Rachel could be/do for him, but that’s all.

  32. I think Nick loved and still does love Rachel.Yet, Rachel is more than what she appears to be, and is growing more powerful with each episode. Nick can see that. So the question is, in my opinion, how does a male like him stand next to a female like her, when he knows he will ultimately be much less powerful than she? Perhaps he’s giving her every reason to let him go, because he can’t bring himself to totally walk away from her.

    Just a thought.

  33. Christiane

    oh no…he didnt love Rachel!
He almost like the admire what she can all do- and he will it have!
    But he dont became :))))
In best i think we give him at jenks- he now what to do with : dirt-but-no-brain.
So is the translate in german from “Dreck-statt-Hirn” so he called in the german book :)))

  34. I think he loved her, but he loved himself more.

  35. I think Nick just uses people, he might think he’s in love, but only to get what he wants.

  36. Lelania

He never loved her. He was with her because she is very powerful.

  37. Trisha May

I have not read the book, but i love the cover. All the covers of your books are great!

  38. Karen Weatherby

A person like Nick can’t love. He sees only the task at hand.

  39. Marlena Jackson

I think he cared for her as much as possible for him, but he was always out for himself regardless of how he hurt Rachel.

  40. Christiane

No- he dont love Rachel! But he admire to all the thinks that Rachel do!
And he wont more of this ….but he can´t – that´s good….he is the most hatet people of the book´s :) and one day will have jenks a chance to do all the thinks that he has told in every book with the (in german:) “Dreck-statt-Hirn” *hihi……(i translate in english – dirt but no brain )

  41. Jocelyn Edwards

I think Nick loved Rachel as much as a man who loves himself above all others can love someone.

  42. I do think Nick loved Rachel as much as she loved him. (From what you’ve revealed later in the series, it just cements my opinion!) Their love made me cry it was so strong.

  43. Tracey Culbertson pinkshu

Nick only loved her as much as anyone with a personality disorder can love. Which is to say as part of his imaginary construct of himself as a worthy person. That’s never enough for either real person.

  44. I don’t think he loved her, he thought he did and that’s where all the spite came from.

  45. Cynthia P

I think Nick loved her but love is a complicated thing.

  46. Jessica Riggs

I don’t think he loved her – he only loved himself.

  47. No, Nick loves her power, he loves what she represents.

  48. Rebekah Neal

nick loved Rachel as much as he could but was blinded by his need for power

  49. Evie

I don’t think Nick ever loved Rachel. I think she was a means to an end. Nick is too egotistical to ever love anyone but himself.

  50. Manda

I think Nick loved her in his own way, but he loves stealing, money, and his own skin above all. Everything changed after he became her accidental familiar. After that he feared her, and fear is a very dangerous emotion that can make even the predicable un predictable. So instead of confronting his emotions he ran from them and Rachael and added Jax in his mischief.

  51. Susan Burns

I LOVE the cover. I haven’t read this particular book, but I have read and earlier one and enjoy your work! Keep it up!

  52. amy Hetrick

He loved the thought of being in love with her, but in the end, his greed won out.

  53. Kara Gordon

I think in the only way that he was capable of loving another person. Not to say that that was in any way normal or healthy, but since when has anyone in Rachel’s love life been necessarily the most healthy or stable individual?

  54. Shauna B.

I don’t think he loved her, but think he thought he did.

  55. brenda

Nick loved her as much as he knew how…

  56. Katrina Collins

I think he loved her as much as he was able but he never grew out of being self centered and into instant gratification which is why he is demon bait.

  57. I don’t think Nick really understands what it means to love someone. He loves himself first and foremost. He probably thought he loved her but no one could ever compare to him. Lol.

  58. Calli Hoffman

I don’t think Nick ever loved Rachel. I think that the only person Nick could possibly ever love is himself.

  59. He loves himself more than anything. So I would say that what ever was left over emotion wise was for her. One of those situations where you tell your friend they would be better off moving on.

  60. Hollyy Penfield

Time changes people, or the super natural of people. So does betrayal and misguided trust. But in the short time that Rachael and Nick had their tryst, YES, I truly think that feeling were shared. That Nick did in some little way love Rachael. But love can come in many forms to many different people.

  61. Shannon

I don’t think he loved her.

  62. I can’t wait to read The Undead Pool. I’m dying here!

Thanks for having such awesome giveaways. I enjoy reading about Rachel and the crew.

  63. Crystal Dinwiddie

Yes nick did love Rachel in the beginning

  64. Rachel Jeannette Hunt

No. Nick was always too busy working an angle to love anyone except possibly himself.

  65. The cover is quite sexy as all of them. My gf would love to receive thiss give-away so here I am ;)

  66. I think Nick thought he loved her, although I don’t think his definition of love and mine are the same.

  67. Ana

I think he did love her….in his own way. But he loves himself more.

  68. Samantha Gilmore

With conditions but yes because she did save him

  69. David W.

I think he was interested in the idea of loving her, but I don’t think he had enough time to love her.

  70. Jennifer

Yes, I do think Nick loved Rachel. We never heard his side of the story so we don’t know what he went through to become what he is. We don’t know the ways that he judged Rachel’s actions. He made some huge mistakes, some of them unforgivable, but we will never understand what led him to make those mistakes. In the beginning though, it did seem that he truly loved Rachel.

  71. Nick loves 2 things: power and himself, in that order.
He had mad skills when it came to discovering objects of power. And an obsessive need to possess the strongest and most dangerous of those objects, rather than sell them for a good penny. I think Rachel was just another compulsion.

  72. Sofía Lara

I think he did love her, he just love himself much more :(

  73. Christina D.

I think Nick enjoyed her, but he didn’t love her, not when it meant doing the right thing.

  74. Joan

I don’t think Nick loved Rachel. He was using her to help himself from the first moment they met.

  75. Toby Derscheid

Did Nick love her???? Yes, and that is truly hard to say by his actions in the story. But when taking as a whole, twisted, and strange Nick type pout look on how life is. He did/ does love her with all of his heart. (A heart the size of the “Grinch’s: that is) I still do not think he deep down didn’t trust her as much as he tried to project.

  76. wow that’s a lot of comments.
Just wanted to show you the german cover for Into the Woods (Blood Soul)
    amy

  77. Christine Hansen

I think Nick really did love her, as much as he was capable of. But really blinded by the possibilities of what he could have, thinking Rachel would still be accepting of him.

  78. I think the only thing Nick loves is what ever new piece of obscure collectible demon junk he could find. I think he liked Rache a lot but hes a messed up guy….I don’t think he can even love himself yet alone anyone else.
    Comment did not post…

  79. I think the only thing Nick loves is what ever new piece of obscure collectible demon junk he could find. I think he liked Rache a lot but hes a messed up guy….I don’t think he can even love himself yet alone anyone else.

  80. Jackie Prowle

I think Nick loved her in the beginning in as much as he could possibly love a person especially with the element of excitement that Rachel brought to the relationship, however there was always that side to him that wasn’t to be trusted as he would always put himself first no matter what the cost.

  81. Barbara

In his limited way, yes, it appeared that so.

  82. As far as Nick was capable of “love,” yeah he did love her.

  83. Sheena Truong

I think he did, he just loved himself more.

  84. I think Nick is one of those people who is into something or someone as long as he gets something out of it. He is selfish and is always looking to move on to bigger and better things at your expense. Or in this case, poor Rachel’s expense. I am sorry to say he used her. He had a kind of love for her but it was the fleeting kind, easily gotten over. I mean, Nick was selling secrets about Rachel to Al before she even knew it. He knew it was risky but he did it anyway for what he would get in return. That was the first insight we had into Nick’s real character. It’s a pity that love can often blind you as it did to Rachel.

  85. Earl Cook

I think loved her as much as he was able. As many have noted, that likely put her behind himself and power and the list.

  86. kurst101

I don’t think Nick knows how to love anyone above himself however I think he loved her in his own way.

  87. Ruben Partida

I think Nick only loved the power Rachel brought and not the actual person Rachel is

  88. I am not sure Nick understood real love. But he likely did “love” her in some way.

This was my favorite book! I am excited to re-read it. I also am excited that I could pre-order the new one!

  89. Billy Duncan

I think that Nick may have loved Rachel in some way but he probably had some emotional instabilities caused from the trauma he endured from his time in the rat fights. I mean look how hard it was for Rachel to be a mink for such a short time compared to that of Nick. And then when she accidentally made him her familiar and he felt that pain every time she pulled on a line it may have changed his views of her. And then to be bested by her so many times it really makes you wonder if he really loved her or was he just using her for her unique ability to be a witch that could do demon magic. I mean he was trying to get in good with Al so yeah.

  90. .

I don’t think Nick ever knew what love was. He was in it for himself and ONLY for himself. Rachel can and did do better…for a little while.

  91. Jess Garrett

I think he loved her, for a time, as much as he was able to love anyone other than himself

  92. I think Nick loved Rachel as much as he did any of his other tools. He was likely attracted to her at first because he was a high-stakes thief, and Rachel’s fast-paced, drama-filled life was right up his alley. Over time, he began to see just how versatile of a ‘tool’ she was; he ‘borrowed’ demon texts from her (“Just one more night, Ray-Ray! Dr. Anders won’t even look at it until tomorrow!”), lit his candles on hallowed ground under the guise of romance, and even went as far as selling bits of her soul (in the form of personal information) without her consent or knowledge for his own personal gain. And, eventually, when he realized she couldn’t be used as a tool anymore, tried to double-cross both her and Trent at the same time by framing her, though it back-fired horribly.

He did love her, but it was an unhealthy, material love. He didn’t deserve Rachel.

(*crosses fingers* Oh my GOD I would die to get this. I’ve read the whole series so far on such a regular basis my copy of FISTFUL OF CHARMS literally fell apart in my hands one day. :C )

  93. Jo Sinclair

I think he loved her he just loved the magic/power more. I think he literally couldn’t help himself.

  94. Janie McGaugh

I like the cover; it’s very moody.

  95. Krysla Folsom

Nick wasn’t enough of …anything, really…for our girl.

  96. Aylah O'Connell

I think Nick loved himself for certain, which limits how much he can love another person. I think he loved what Rachel could do for him and the idea of her, but I don’t think he was IN love with her.

  97. Martha

I don’t think Nick truly loved Rachel. He took his attraction to her combined with his gratitude for getting him out of the rat fights and convinced himself that it was love. Then when he thought that Al had taken Rachel, his guilt over his role in it convinced him all the more. But bottom line, Nick was too selfish to really love anyone. There is no way that, knowing how Rachel felt about demons, he could sell personal information about her to Al if his feelings were true – let alone turn on her the way he did when she refused to let him keep the focus.

  98. jkh

Quick story: My ex-husband, Richard, loved me and our daughter much as Nick loved Rachel: only as it reflected on him to his profit or to his popularity. After we split he stopped calling himself Rich and asked that he be addressed as “Dick,” which I could never do, because it always came out “Dickkk.”

  99. I think Nick loved Rachel as much as he was capable of in the beginning, but he loved money more. Besides I think being turned into her familiar really freaked him out. She is much better off without him. Godd riddance.

  100. Elaine Carey

I think Nick loved Rachel in his own way but as soon as he thought he could make a buck from her that’s all he cared about To him it was all about the all mighty dollar.

  101. Jess copeland

I think at one point Nick did love Rachel except when Rachel tried to harness. Nick’s power and almost killed him I think it scared him so badly that he was unable to love her anymore from that point on. He pretended very well for his own sake so that he could get what he wanted but I do think that deep down he still harbors some care for her but definitely cares more for himself and always did. So yes, he loved her at some point but after one (pretty big)mistake he decided she wasn’t for him.. Although, part of me wonders if he never really loved her at all and her harnessing his power and almost killing him maybe he was just an excuse for him to get out of a relationship he didn’t want to be in. He is a user and always will be.

  102. Nick was too selfish to love Rachel, maybe he thought he loved her, but he couldn’t possibly know the meaning of love. He was able to manipulate her into getting what he wanted, and used her to that advantage, I really hated him once I got to know that!!

  103. Heather wicks

I think he loved her in the superficial way someone that selfish can. So not in the way that counts. Love all the covers!

  104. Shawn

No, I don’t think Nick really loved her. I think he lusted after her power & what she could do for him.

  105. Heather Perkins

I think nick did love her truly in his mind but could not pass up the chance to be bigger and better even for love.

  106. Alexa W.

I haven’t read all of your books but I always love your covers, they are always so interesting to look at!!! Love the covers!!! <3

  107. Ugh, Nick needs to go off another bridge. Anyone Ivy doesn’t like is proof enough for me that they’re a scumbag….or anyone who steals one of Jenks’ kids… GRR.

  108. Susan OC

I don’t think Nick is really capable of love. His motivation was clearly personal gain. He was a con, pure and simple.

  109. Betty Rose

I think he did love her in his own way which was a product of his life experiences and culture and very different from her expectations—

  110. Sarah Oldham

I suppose he loved her as much as he could, but I don’t think that that is saying much.

  111. Terri Jenkins

Nick, the little weasel, did not love Rachel. Nick only loved Nick. She was too good for the likes of him. She deserved way better. And had she found him. Only to lose him.

  112. Carolyn Busby

I’ve had scumbag boyfriends like Nick before- he never loved her…just loved the idea of being in love with her. And as soon as that became inconvenient, sayonara woman!

  113. Erin J

There is a difference between love and like…I think that Nick LIKED the thought of Rachel, but I don’t think that he LOVED her. In the end, his own love was for his own greed…

  114. Jenn

I believe that Nick thought that he loved Rachel, but the emotion that he felt was more of an addiction to the magic that she had and the access that he could have to it by being in love with her. His love for her was a deception it was all in his head never in his heart.

  115. Catherine-Jillian Maguire

I think Nick truly loved Rachel as much as someone with his personality could.

  116. Christie Maher

Yes I think he did really love Rachel.Up until the point where he realized he couldn’t be with he long term because she couldn’t love him for who he is/was which was/is scum.

  117. Oh Nick. I think he did love her, as much as he could. He just didn’t exactly get what healthy love (or anything else) was.

  118. Candace Mantyk

    Nick only loved one person………Nick.

  119. I always believed that Nick loved Rachel. I just think that he didn’t understand her, and so they had issues in the long run.

  120. Anne Heim-King

Yes! I truly believe that Nick loved Rachel. As with all love it is from the depth of the person that it comes from. So yes he loved Rachel with what depth he had available to him.

  121. Lora Andrikopoulos

Yes I think he truly did love her in the best way he could.

  122. Yeah, I do think in his own way, Nick did love Rachel. The problem though is that he cared about himself more then her which made his love, cheap.

  123. Uta O'Malley

No, I do not think Nick truly loved Rachel.

  124. Kathleen

Nah, I think he was a slimy toad all along.

  125. Mary Wilson

Love the cover, looking forward to reading the book. I’ve loved the whole series, and am not looking forward to seeing it end.

  126. Lynn B.

I think Nick wanted to love Rachel but he could never put anyone before himself and his own motives.

  127. Victoria

I don’t think Nick really loved Rachel. I think he loved what she could/would do for him..

  128. Jeremiah Edwards

I think that he was in love with the danger of her. Nick fell in love with her as a Doctor Who companion follows the Doctor. There is a danger that follows them and keeps life interesting while opening opportunities to become stronger themselves. I think Nick was hoping for her to turn to the dark side (they have cookies) and he would be by her side as she becomes even more powerful.

  129. Katie L

I think that Nick did love her in his own way, but his life style and what he believed he deserved got in the way of truly loving her.

  130. Michele

I don’t think he really loved her. I think he was using her to get back on his feet and for whatever resources he could scam his way into. The jerk.

  131. No, I don’t think Nick loved Rachel. He was attracted to her strength and power for sure, but he seemed incapable of loving anyone other than himself. Never really cared for Nick.

  132. Robert Beecher

I think he did love her, as much as he was capable of. As for the cover, great boots.

  133. Jenn

I’m not sure love is the best word to describe what they had. I think he probably cared for her, but couldn’t overcome his greed and selfishness.

  134. Jessica Stewart

I believe he loved the idea of Rachel and the power he believed they could achieve. Power is his first love.

  135. I dont think he loved her, he cared about her when it was convenient. He is one of those people that think about themselves, when he found out about the focus.. oh he hated her… Go Rachel !

  136. Amanda

I think that Nick was more in love with the idea of loving Rachel, or more precisely loving a witch than he actually loved Rachel herself.

  137. Eliza

No! Of course he didnt ever love Rachel but he saw & was attracted to her power. WHAT IS YOUR LIFE YES PEOPLE honestly, you need not lower your standards! If he loved her, he would have NEVER ever sold her personal info to demons! He knew how conniving demons are, he was well aware that even seemingly innocuous info could be dangerous. Why wouldn’t he protect her from that if he loved her? Additionally, Nick effectively ended their relationship when becoming her familiar, which was unintentional. I think he would have been more forgiving if he truly loved her.

  138. Kyla Duhe

I think Nick really loved Rachel, but it was like you said, as much as he could. Obviously his elevator doesn’t quite go all the way to the top; he’s a strange bird……

  139. kayla

Nick never loved Rachel. From the beginning he was selling personal information to Al.
You don’t do that to someone you love.

  140. kristin dinges

Nick is not capable of truly loving anyone, his affections are tied to what the person can do for him. He is only capable of using and watching out for himself, as long as he was able to manipulate Rachael’s feelings for him she had value to him. Once the blinders came off and she saw him for who he was his true personality came out.

  141. Amanda M

I think Nick felt as much for her as he could – but that his little Nick brain was so full of himself and his scheming that what he could feel… wasn’t much.

  142. BookLady

I don’t think Nick ever really loved Rachel, he was just using her.

  143. Denise Van Plew

Yes he loved what she could do for him until he let the power go to head and became a guy about stuff. I would really like to see Rachel get with a special someone though.

  144. Denise Van Plew

Yes he loved what she could do for him up until he became a guy about stuff. She had more feelings for him though. I would really like to see Rachel get that special someone truly.

  145. Cathy Hubbard

I think Nick didn’t plan to have feelings for her but when he started to love her, his other priorities came first.

  146. Ashley U

    Nick loved her.

  147. I always thought Nick was using Rachel for her knowledge.

  148. Mic R

Yeah, I have to admit that Nick did care for and may have even loved Rachel. I think at first he may have seen someone who was a kindred spirit, yet he didn’t really know Rachel. They had different morals and values. Rachel’s actions were to help either those she cared about or “the underdog,” where as Nick’s actions were mostly, and I stress mostly, to help himself.

  149. Brenda R.

Nick loved her as much as he loved anyone, but Nick Is self-centered and only really cares about himself.

  150. i am not really sure, i think he never did

  151. Kathleen Smith

    he loves himself always !!!!

  152. Jessica R.

There isn’t just one way to love someone. I think Nick did love Rachel, but not necessarily in the stereotypical true-love kind of way. For someone who’s life revolved around lies and theft, his love could have stemmed from the mystery and excitement that her life brought. He seems to love the thrill of the theft and has to do more dangerous and challenging scores in order to satisfy his desire. The adrenalin rush that follows Rachel would have been more than enough to lure even the biggest thrill seeker out of hiding. I think in that way, he did love her.

  153. Trisha Cole

I think that Nick tried to love her… even wanted to, but her needs or wants were not as important as his need to steal.

  154. Meih

I think that at the beginning he cared about her, but then his selfishness won over his feelings.

  155. Jennifer

I think he loved her in his own way but not the way she needed. I also believe he became scared of her and what she was and then used her as a means to gain things.

  156. I think he did at one point, but I’m not sure he can be with someone without using them to some capacity.

  157. Oh Nick, Nick, Nick. I think that when they first met he truly cared for her, but I also think that it was more of an infatuation sort of thing. He liked what she could do. Love’s a pretty strong word. :)

  158. Kristan Schmitt

I agree with Jamie. I think Nick loved Rachel, but his self love got in the way of him loving her like she needed to be loved.

  159. Holly Strickland

I think he was more intrigued by her and what she was capable of. I believe he loved her but became intimidated by her, turning in resentment.

  160. Kristine Shore

No, I don’t think he loved her. I think he loved the possibility of what they could have done together.

  161. Kym

Well, I have thought about this a lot. I used to believe that he loved her, but now, I think Nick is too Narcissistic to be capable of love. I think that from the beginning, even as a rat, he saw the benefits of allying himself with Rachel and all of his actions stemmed from that.

  162. Samantha

I do think he loved her in the beginning but money and power were more important. almost like an addiction for Nick. the more powerful Rachel got the more he wanted to be better then her. He loved himself more.

  163. Lindsey R

I don’t think Nick ever over Rachel. I think Nick thought he loved Rachel but he never got beyond the mindless infatuation stage and when he realized she could be useful for his own personal gain all bets were off.

  164. Hayley Fountain

He may have in the beginning, but he wanted more and more power and they just couldn’t stay together.

  165. Crystal

I think he believes he did, trying to make himself look good, but no. All he ever did was try to push her away from her friends and lie to her. You just don’t treat people that way if you love them.

  166. Jamie

I think he did love her, he just loved himself more.

  167. Cat

I wouldn’t call it love. More like the strong affection one might have in late youth/early adulthood when still figuring out what love means and requires

  168. AmandaC

I think it doesn’t matter if he loved her or not. They needed to experience eachother

  169. Janie Marlow

I think Nick loved her the only way he knew how. I believe his first love is himself.

  170. Nick loved Rachel; he was just using a different dictionary definition of “love” than we’re used to. It’s so easy to fall for him- and then he pulls the gangsta junk on our homegirl. Rachel is one unlucky chick in the love department.

  171. cindy burczyk

I think he really did love her. She became a stronger and more confident woman for him. Plus his personal agenda was more important.

  172. Barb w

I do think he loved Rachel. Kisten had a good point in that Nick couldn’t handle not being the better (more powerful) person. But Nick did mess up big. I almost felt bad for the way he was treated. But I was the same as Rachel. One more betrayal one top of another…he was toast.

  173. I think Nick loved her as much as he was able, and never let her go

  174. Tina Popham

I think that at first he did love her, but I think he got greedy and that greed destroyed his humanity! :( but in the end she was better off with out him!! :)

  175. Rebecca Locklear

I think Nick loved Rach. He is just Nick and motivated by his own motives :)

  176. Nick certainly cared for Rachel… But that he was selling her secrets/quirks early on I think shows he was always more interested in using her rather than loving her

  177. Cynthia Orr

I think Nick was playing her the whole time.

  178. Glenda Inscho

I think he loved her in his own way. I just don’t believe he loved her more than he loved the power.

  179. Like many others said, I think he did as much as he could. I think he wanted to but his own sense of survival and getting what he wanted was stronger.

  180. Jamie Phelps

I think maybe he did love her in the beginning, but it really freaked him out when Rachel made him her familiar. I think it was too much for their relationship.

  181. I don’t think Nick knew what love was. He may have believed he loved Rachel, but the minute he found out he could gain power by using her, he did. Never liked him much.

  182. Charissa E

Nick loved her (and I suspect does even after he discovered the focus had been switched). However, I dont think he was in love with her. I think he loved the traits he understood and couldnt take the negative that came with it.

  183. Cathy Smith

I do truly believe that Nick did love her in his own way.

  184. Faith

I think he was able to love her before he realized that she was a demon. I think Nick can’t handle being the weaker one.

  185. munchkin

i do think Nick felt love for Rachel, from his perspective, he did not see that how he behaved was wrong. i feel this is demonstrated by his reactions to Rachel’s “death” and how he behaves later when he demonstrates he feels Rachel betrayed him over the focus.

  186. Jenni BW

No, I don’t think he loved her. I think he liked her a lot, admired her power and attitude, was grateful to be rescued by her, and was completely fascinated by her. But he wasn’t in love with her/didn’t love her – all his actions (except whilst a rat and fighting Al/saving her from Al) were selfish, no decision he made was solely in Rachel’s best interests. And he never tried to change his actions/outlook to compromise and try and make their relationship work.

  187. Amanda Quinn

I think Nick did love Rachel, as much as he could. He obviously loved himself more and wasn’t bright enough to see why using information about Rachel would be hurtful and dangerous.

  188. gueniverefey

I think he did love her which is why he became so mean later on.

  189. Amy Griffin

I do think he loved her, but started to hate her when she started challenging him. He didn’t want her to grow or change. His love couldn’t grow because he wanted her to remain as she was, less knowledgeable, less skilled.

  190. Yeah, Nick cared for Rachel, but I truly feel that it was more for how far she could get him rather than for who she was. Nick had more feelings for power than anything else.

  191. Ama S.

Nick loved the witch that Rachel was, but he loved himself more. I don’t think he would have loved her if she were human.

  192. I think Nick loved Rachel as much as he was able, but he couldn’t love anyone more than himself

  193. Heather V

I think Nick loved Rachel but he loved power more. I think he originally wanted her for her power but fell for her for a bit then the power lust won over his love for her.

  194. Nick-k. Actually, I do think he loved Rachel in the beginning, or I should say his form of “love.” Even though he was selling her out to Al, he wasn’t doing it out of spite–he really didn’t see anything wrong with it. After she took the focus though, I think he saw it as her taking away his life’s work…so he had to get even.

  195. I believe that at some point Nick truly loved Rachel, however, his own selfishness got in the way. He was a truly mean man and she deserved so much better. When his own personal gain wasn’t at stake then he was true to her and all other times he was a lying, cheating, piece of crap.

  196. Michelle Wilson

I never liked Nick. However i think in his own twisted mind he did care for Rachel for a while there. Problem was he wanted power and information more than he wanted her. He wasn’t afraid to use her in every which way to get it either.

  197. Diana Hughes

I think Nick thought he loved Rachel. The love wasn’t enough to make him stop doing stupid things he knew she didn’t like, like calling up demons

  198. Nick ‘s main concern in all things was Nick. I don’t believe he loved Rachel. I don’t think he’s capable of true love. He’s really a very sad character.

  199. Nick was an opportunist. He used Rachel every way he could. :( Never, ever liked him.

  200. Christine

I think that Nick was in love with her but in his own twisted way. But he grew to resent her.

  201. Carolyn H

I feel that Nick is not able to love. He was all about himself.

  202. I think Nick had the potential to love Rachel at one point but once he saw that he may be able to gain something from their relationship that changed. I think he values his possible reward more than Rachel’s love.

  203. I think Nick loved Nick and used Rach as a way to get out of the trouble he got himself in. :(

  204. Mariette

I don’t think Nick ever really loved Rachel. He liked her a lot, that’s for certain, but I don’t think he could ever truly love anyone. It’s sad to think about how he was just dragging her along because people in love are easier to manipulate, but she’s tough. She survived. :)

  205. Jessie

I think Nick only loved what Rachel could do for him!

  206. Jessica S

I feel Nick loved Rachel as much as his selfishness allowed. He started to hate Rachel because she had the things he wanted….power….notability…loyalty (friends) and unconditional love… ( Her family, friends,.. (David, Jenks, Ivy and possibly, hopefully Trent :D)…

  207. Amanda

I don’t think Crap for Brains loved Rachel. Not a true love. If anything he was enthralled by her, the danger/excitement. Until it got too much.

  208. Natasha Yatsallie

Hmm. That’s a tough one. I think, yes. He did love her up until he realized that she betrayed him but it seemed like a selfish love, maybe he just loved her power even as he was afraid of it.

  209. I think Nick loved her much as a weaselly crap for brains could.

  210. Diana Vincent

I think Nick seeks his own thrill and isn’t capable of love is a real way. Somewhat of a sociopath.

  211. Susie

Oh Nicky (AKA Crap for Brains), I think he loved her in someways and for a time but he wanted power more than he wanted love.

Thanks for the giveaway! Can’t wait for the new book!

  212. Michael gallagher

no he never loved her. he was more interested in power and what she could do for him

  213. This is the next book on my hollows to read list so up till the previous book I think Nick loved her but I don’t think he loved her enough. Love the cover. Normally one wouldn’t think the yellow tones would look so nice but it totally works here! Love all the covers!

  214. Cat Moonsong

I think that Nick truly thought they he was in love with Rachel. Unfortunately, he really doesn’t understand what love is.

  215. Maryanne B

I think that crap-for-brains, I mean Nick, loved Rachel inasmuch as someone who like him can.

  216. lengua17@yahoo.com

I think that Nick loved the idea of loving Rachel and what she could do for him, and because of Rachel he is no longer a Rat. But the Vamp had it right when he transformed him into his “true” Character.

  217. Daniel Ludlow

I believe Nick may have had feelings for Rachel, but I think they weren’t what normal people would call love.

  218. nicole warren

I think Nick did love Rachel as much as he could love a person. He is incapable of any real love but he knew he could get things rare things with her around. He loved the dangerous mystique that follows Rachel.

  219. Nancy Galdeano

I don’t know that Nick was capable of love. I think he might have “felt something” for Rachel, but I don’t think he loved her.

  220. Jessica Grieco

I believe he had his own fondness for the good in Rachel. But it was not love. I think deep down he envied her ability to be good and try to do good things.

  221. Eloise Graves

I think he loved her as much as a selfish & self centered person can. Thank god she found out before more time had passed!

  222. moonbeam080680

I really don’t know. Part of me says he may have, but the other part of me says he would not have said all those things on the bridge because Rachel would have been more important than the focus to begin with… I really don’t like Nick!!!

  223. Evelyn

I think it depends on how you define love. I think he cared for her but he cared more about what he wanted and what he believed he needed. In the end, he always put himself first, even if deep down he was conscious of the consequences his actions would bring and how they would hurt Rachel. So no, for me that’s not love.

  224. Kesha

No because Nick is only capable of loving himself.

  225. Nick was out to get what he wanted and didn’t care as to who he hurt along the way.

  226. Leah Moyse

I think in nick’s world he did love Rachel or at least thinks he did but when someone is that self-centred I don’t believe he can actually love another entirely.

  227. Jennifer Lyons

I believe Nick did love Rachel and still does to some extent. I still feel sad that he didn’t redeem himself in some way, but the amount of times he saved Rachel when he could have let her die proved it to me, that he loved her in his own way.

  228. R Stone

I think nick loved Rachel. But I think after being her familiar he was more terrified of her than anything so he decided to use her instead.

  229. Daniel

I don’t think he loved her in any way a normal person would define love.

  230. A.N.

Nick never loves Rachel. He loves himself.

  231. Jamie B

I feel that Nick was using Rachael as a tool, a means to accomplish his goal. Hey may have had some feelings for her but I do not feel that it was truly love.

  232. I think he loved her as much as he could love anyone other than himself.

  233. Amanda Waite

I think some small part of Nick wanted to love Rachel which accounts for the small acts of affection. But Nick is a con man and those acts can be suspect as benefiting him and his ego.

  234. At first I thought it was gratitude for helping him escape the rat fights, and they forged a bond. Then I think he enjoyed being with her because of her special talents. It made him feel special to be with her. I think he did fall in love with her but his selfish nature got the best of him..

  235. Laura D

    I think he did

  236. Michelle

Nick, Nick, Nick… Always leaping first and thinking later. I think he loved Rachel in his own twisted way. However, love should mean you put that person’s needs before your own. Nick isn’t capable of being that selfless. His wants and needs would always come first and that’s not love.

  237. I think he did love her….as much as he is able to, and until he figured out how to use her!!

  238. Trish Collins

The selfish ratboy only loved himself, Rachel was always a commodity in that relationship. He only ever beeded her when it was to his benefit; wether it was buying information from demons orkeeping his own butt safe.Rachel paid the higher price with even giving him an iota of her heart.

  239. Katherine Jenks

Yes, I believe he truly loved her.

  240. I think Nick was infatuated by her and definitely found her useful. Love? Probably not. If he had chosen her and not himself, then I would have said yes.

  241. dana

I think nick thought he loved her in the beginning but he let his drive to be more poweful get in the way. he lost his moral compass and any love he had for Rachel.

  242. Arnie Kruse

NO. Nick is a calculating power hungry guy. I feel from the minute his beady little eyes landed on Mink Rachel, he saw power and in his mind was all about how to get/control Rachel’s. When he failed at that, he has been all about punishing her for being so much more than he will ever be.

  243. I don’t think he ever really loved her.

  244. LeeAnn

i don’t think he loved her

  245. Kelly Foreback

Nicks love for Rachel seemed at times genuine, but immature when it came down to it. He didn’t make the sacrifices needed for their love to grow. His own selfishness proved to be his true love.

  246. Nicole Hall

I think Nick saw Rachel as an opportunity and nothing else. Everything he did had an ulterior motive. I’ll be please if we don’t see him again. lol

  247. Kara Goulet

I think Nick believed he loved Rachel but doesn’t truly understand love due to what he has experienced in his lifetime. Too much has happened to him for him to truly be able to have an honest relationship with anyone.

  248. Heather MacGregor

Nick loved the idea of a kindred spirit…a partner in crime so to speak. He never truly loved Rachel for herself.

  249. Bridget Raith

I think in his own messed up way Nick did love Rachel.

  250. I don’t think Nick loved Rachel. I think he wanted to believe he loved her, but he was just too selfish to allow anyone else to be that important.

  251. Kristin Shiflet

I don’t know that Nick knew Rachel well enough to truly fall in love with her. They were brought together by extraordinary circumstances and I think that created a strong bond between them, but it wasn’t love. Nick wasn’t ready for a real love. He was too wrapped up in his own needs to put someone else first.

  252. Elizabeth De La Rosa

Nick loved the idea of Rachael. He loved what she was and what she stood for. I also think he was envious of her abilities and the way he used her reflected that.

  253. I really don’t think he loved her in the storybook “happily ever after” “head over heels” kind of love. If anything, he loved the idea of their relationship and thought that what he was doing didn’t effect his idea of “them”. His actions were his own decisions that he didn’t have to clear with her or anyone else, even when they were totally selfish and against Rachel’s beliefs. And that’s not true love, that’s warped and twisted infatuation.

  254. Angela Atherton

I want to believe that Nick once loved Rachel. Unfortunately, he loves him self much more..

  255. Jerry C

Yes, Nick loved Rachel. But not nearly as much as he loved himself.

  256. Georgie Porgie

Nope, not then. He pretended to get what he wanted

  257. Missy Fern

Nick. He really bothers me, I liked him so much when he saved her in the beginning but now her friends are her enemies and her enemies are her friends. Did he love her, that little rat? Yes, he did, but he loves himself more.

  258. Scott

Like others have said, I think he loved thingns about her more than he loved her. But mostly I think he was afraid. He was afraid of his employers, of the packs, and of Rachel and company. He did what he had to to stay on her good side and under her protection, until he didn’t need her anymore.

  259. Sherry D

Nick was drawn to Rachel and cared for her in his own way. But as much as love should grow stronger in a relationship, his greed and narcissistic needs became more important to him than she was.

  260. Sara Kline

I think he loved her the only way he knew how to, but it wasn’t the fairy tale love we all want and desire where love conquers all. Clearly it wasn’t strong enough to overcome his love of power and self preservation.

  261. Tammy Hersman

Nick doesn’t know what love is!

  262. Nick didn’t love Rachel because love requires you put the other persons needs above your own wants and desire- something that he could never do.

  263. Chloe Mansell

I think he did love Rachel as much as he was capable of which was not much as he is a very selfish little man.

  264. sheila collins

Nick loved Rachel. He just loved himself and his machinations more!

  265. CHRISTINA CALLAHAN

I think Nick isn’t really capable of loving any one. He might have cared for Rachel, but since he was able to walk away and backstab her so easily, I don’t feel he loved her. Especially since he’s done it so many times now.

  266. jana preather

Nick liked Rachel, but he loved himself more

  267. Terry C.

Nick was in love with the Idea of Rachel and what that brought to him, now Ivy and Rachel…that’s a different blood-type all together!

  268. Toni Matcek

I think that Nick loved Rachel in his own selfish way. He is just incapable of seeing past his own wants and needs.

  269. sarah

I don’t think nick loved rachel, I think he is selfish and loves only what he can gain.

  270. Karla

I think he loved her in his own way, but his desire for power and money were more important to him.

  271. Naomi Jacobs

I think Nick wanted to love her. She was powerful and innocent, she trusted, but she could also get herself out of a jam. I think Nick is so broken that he believed he loved her while looking for way to use her innocence for his gain. I also think that Nick felt guilt about it and so he looked for a way to make his using of Rachel her fault. Once he could clear his conscious he used what feelings she had to his advantage.

  272. Jenny

I think he believed he did but was too selfish to understand what it actually meant to love someone

  273. I think as much as his black, shriveled heart could love, Nick did love Rachel.

  274. purrfectkatus

Was it possible for Nick to love someone more than himself? I never trusted him from the beginning. I guess I psy-ded with Ivy…lol.

  275. Jessica Edens

I think in his own weird way he did. The problem is I doubt he understands what Live is. From what little we learn from his past, I feel as though he does not fully grasp unconditional love. His obsession with property (magical or monetary) leaves little room for love of much else.

  276. Charlie

Don’t think Nick is really capable of loving or respecting anyone but himself. Rachel was a novel accessory as long as it was convenient for him. He didn’t really seem to give her a second thought when he other avenues to pursue.

  277. Jacque Greene

Nick is a very complex, selfish, thief. I think he loved what he thought Rachel could do for him more than loving her for her. I certainly believe that he confused these emotions and truly believed that he loved her but not the way love is supposed to be.

  278. lavinia68

I think Nick loved Rachel in a way; i don’t think it was a deep, true love. In my mind he loved her in a fleeting, dangerous way; he loved her power and skill, but not Rachel herself. This shows once he realizes the extent of her power when she makes him her familiar, and basically ran away. He didn’t love that power and skill when it was used against his best interests, such as with the focus. Nick was a power hungry little man, selling information about Rachel to demons for power. If he had loved Rachel rather than her abilities, he never would’ve considered selling her life to demons. I’d never really liked him from the beginning, he was always sketchy character and too comfortable with taking risks without giving them thought.

  279. Rebecca Klingsten

I do think that Nick did love her…but Nick is messed up and let his scheming ways take over.

  280. Amy

Nick is damaged goods. Incapable of loving anyone else more than what ever scheme he’s currently concocting. Does that mean he didn’t want to love Rachel? No, I think the issue was that he realized that Rachel was exactly the kind of person he ought to love and I think maybe he tried, but it was beyond him.

  281. Heather

I think he loved her as much as he can – I think the pain of her drawing through him changed how he felt about her.

  282. Charlene Willis

I believe at one point in the begining he did love her but his lust for the demon knowledge that Al could give him won out over any love he did have for her.

  283. Angela S

I think he liked the idea of loving her. I think he wanted to love her, but I don’t think he ever truly did.

  284. Nick loves Nick first and foremost. I think he did have strong feelings for Rachel, but the fact that she was stronger/better/more moralistic then himself was a mark against their relationship. He was also too immature for a real relationship, for example his pushing Ivy’s buttons, You can’t hate someone as hard as he does if you didn’t feel something at one time.

  285. Yes I do think Nick loved Rachel to an extent in his one way. I think he was scared off from her accidentally making him her familiar and his love was not as strong as hers. I think he was telling Al info at first because that was more important to him, he was telling things he thought was safe for the info, and when he thought she was dead he was telling even bigger things. I think he loved her in a way when she saved him, as can be seen when she finds him with the weres, but he is overall a selfish character who does not feel the depth of emotion that Rachel can/does. He may love but he doesn’t make that love that important over other things; it is a selfish and broken kind of love. I think this quickly turns to hate in this book when it happens with the bait and switch.

  286. Leroy Philbrook

Hoping for the hardcopy to read, so my take on the cover is the ever incredible sexy yet down to earth or the ever-after Rachel, obviously modeled after the author.. ;) Looking off into the distance with so much on her mind and forming a plan on how to solve the problems that are facing her.

  287. Heather B.

I think Nick loved Rachel as much as someone that selfish can love anyone.

  288. Stephanie F.

I don’t believe he ever truly loved her, he us only capable of loving himself. I think it was more a case of lust and attraction but definitely not love.

  289. Patti Woodard

    Nick….Nick loves Nick…and greed, power and money…but not Rachel…Rachel didn’t make Nick’s Top 3 List….Check Trent’s…bet she’s at the top….Go Trent!!

  290. Caitlin V.

Oh Nick…*sigh* I do think he loved Rachel in his own screwed up way. Whatever type of love it was it was ultimately an unhealthy one, but yes I do believe it was love.

  291. Shannon Barrett

I think Nick only loves Nick.

  292. Susie Johnson

He loved her as much as he was able.

  293. Jessica

I think Nick loved her in his own messed up way. I think he got caught up owing “people”/demons and lost sight of himself so how can he love another if he’s lost himself? Now he’s angry at himself but he’s projecting that on Rachel.

  294. I think he loved her as much as he could love someone else. He was much too greed driven and me-me-me to love unconditionally.

  295. naturallydotty

I don’t think Nick has ever really loved anyone except himself. He Thought he loved Rachel for a while, but it wasn’t LOVE.

  296. Luckos

He never loved her… oh, wait, these were my feelings towards Nick.

  297. Jessica

Not at all…he was only looking out for himself-he used Rachel just to get ahead…try to anyways….

  298. Nicole

I think Nick could have loved Rachel, but his idea of love was twisted. He used snippets of information about her to get favors from Al, even before he became Rachel’s familiar and she drew a line through him scaring him spineless. However, his lashing out at Rachel at the end was out of a sense of betrayal for her not telling him she was still alive, which leads me to believe he loved her in his own way at some point.

  299. Kharen Dreyfus

I think that Nick loved Rachel as much as he could love anyone. He is all about himself and didn’t really care about anyone but himself till Rachel. The love he had just wasn’t strong enough to change his ways :/

  300. Amber Frazer

Nick loved Rachel, but he is so self centred he is not capable of ever putting anyone before himself. I have always pitied his character.

  301. Susan Powers

Nick will only ever truly love Nick.

  302. wendy johnson-hamm

He’s the male version of a gold digger. Her true love was murdered and I’m still unhappy.

  303. Nick was someone who reminds me of a guy who was much the same way: he claimed to love someone, but was also quick to hurl abuse or twist words when he felt he was wasn’t given the lion’s share of attention he thought he deserved. Nick, I think, loved Rachel in the same way; she was an object who was supposed to put Nick at the center of her universe, and ignore his flaws. Overall, she was a pretty tool, and once she finally stood up to him, he turned on her.

  304. Danny Weaver

I guess so, as mich as Nick can, gotta qualify it that way at least. I believe Nick has proven that he can and will use/manipulate anyone(including Jax)to further his own ends.

  305. I think he loved her in his own way but he is too selfish to love wholeheartedly.

  306. Virginia

I think Nick loved what Rachel could do for him in a magic/power sense. As for real, romantic love — yeah, I highly doubt he ever did.

  307. Kristina

Nick is to vain to love anyone but himself. I think his ego wanted her to worship him and realizing she no longer did is what hurt him nothing more.

  308. Becky Ross

I think he did but not in the emotional sense of love. It was more what she could do to further his own plans and wants.

  309. Maranda

Nick wasn’t capable of loving anybody but himself.

  310. jessica gordon

Maybe but he was/is such a train wreck that love was really beyond his capacity. Poor Rachel.

  311. Stephanie H.

I think Nick loved Rachel in his own way, or at least he thought he did.

  312. I think nick cares for Rachel in as much as he can care for anybody. His whole personality is pretty self centered. For all his bravado though he is a whimp. Cant handle things and cant let go of things either.

  313. Jennifer Markowski

Yes I think in his own twisted way Nick loved Rachel.

  314. Melissa Reynolds

I think Nick did love her in his own way. He just had a love of money and magical knowledge=power that meant more to him.

  315. Elaine Nelson

Not read yet. Just the first two books. Like the cover on the right. Short leather as opposed to the long dress. Nice. Can’t wait to read the rest.

  316. Melanie

I don’t think Nick loved Rachel. He may have thought he loved her but if you truly loved someone you wouldn’t treat them the way he treated her; and you would put them first over yourself.

  317. No, I don’t think he ever loved her, her used and betrayed her time after time…. He was a great character though!

  318. Rebecca Enz

Who couldn’t love Rachael?! I think he did

  319. As far as Nick could love, he did love her, but not as much as himself.

  320. Kerry Ly

No, I don’t think he loved her.

  321. Yes I believe he did, as much as Nick could love someone other than himself.

  322. Tessa Martin-Bashore

Nick. Ugh. I think “crap for brains” may have loved her – at first.

  323. I think Nick loved her as much as he was capable, but he loved himself more.

  324. Alison

No, I don’t think he did. Or maybe I just never really liked him. ; )

  325. Chris

Nick didn’t really love Rachel he loved the drama and access to things to steal she gave him

  326. Andrea M.

No, Nick did not love Rachael. He desired her, which is not remotely the same thing.

  327. Hanna Wolski

I haven’t gotten ahold of Fistful of Charms yet. I keep searching for it at my local bookstore but it’s never there! So I guess that leaves me to chatter about the book cover. :3 Considering what it might involve (the questionable love of Nick) I think it’s somewhat symbolic. A fistful of charms, she has her charms in her hands, behind her back, looking off into the horizon. Perhaps she’s going to completely let herself go of Nick. The charms might resemble their bond they had, perhaps. Maybe she’ll throw them into the sea. A very salty sea. :D And their relationship is no more.

  328. Jennifer Cox

I think he loved her in his own twisted way. He cared for her a little, so in his mind he considered that real love. But he cared more about the personal gains he could achieve by being with her and using her. She deserves so much better!!

  329. Miranda Beazley

I think Nick loved the idea of Rachel but not who she really was. My feelings are that he was playing her and stringing her along because of who and what she is.

  330. Shannon Quenzer

I think Nick loved Rachel as much as he was capable and maybe out of gratitude, at first. I think he realized pretty quickly that he was never going to be her equal, though.

  331. Liz S

I think he loved her as much as he could, and loved what she could do for him most of all.

  332. I think Nick really cared for her in his own way. I think his first love will always be knowledge above anything else though.

  333. Amber Robinson

No, not really. I’m not exactly sure to what limits he is capable of loving a person, but I’m pretty sure even Nick is able to love more deeply than he did – more deeply than duping her and constantly pulling the rug out from under her feet for a quick buck. It’s not that he didn’t love her, it’s that he didn’t love her to his full capacity. And now he might not get the chance to experience that with anyone else, either. Hah.

  334. Vicki Kelley

I think Nick did love her, but his experiences with love and healthy relationships are very much lacking.

  335. Heather C. Collins

I think nick cared about her up to a point- as much as he was able to care about anyone other than himself. You do have to care for someone in order to become so hatefully twisted and spiteful. Under it all, though, she was truly a means to an end for him, as is everybody. He only sees people as tools to be used to his advantage.

  336. Ashley Miller

I wanted to believe that Nick really loved Rachel because I wanted her to be happy, but I don’t think that what he felt was real love. I think he was infatuated with her, and excited about the possibilities that using her could bring for himself.

  337. Sarah McGing

Nick did love her. He is an opportunist and when things weren’t working out the way he wanted he took the next best thing. He’s selfish but it doesn’t mean he can’t love. Just not in the selfless way we would have liked. It’s more like real life. He loved her for loving him. He loved her for what she could provide him, what she could teach him, what she could give him. He loved the idea of her. He loved her.

  338. Brandi Lisa B

On some level I do think Nick loved Rachel but ultimately loved himself more.

  339. Carrie Gamble

I think he thought he truly loved her until he was scared of her.

  340. Shelly Strange

I think Nick is too self absorbed to ever truly love anyone. He was trading information about her even before becoming her familiar.

  341. drgnldy71

No, I don’t think Nick loved Rachel. He loved the idea of Rachel, hey, a human dating a witch! But no, he didn’t love her, not even in his own little twisted way.

  342. Cynthia Ellis

I think Nick was more in love with the idea of what Rachel could do for him more than he actually ever loved her.

  343. Rachelle Resendez

No way. Nick never loved Rachel, he was a user and he manipulated her into falling for him because he saw her potential.

  344. Ellen Hotchkiss

Some people do not know what true unconditional love is. Nick loved her at first as well as he could. Did he have an underlying agenda when he realized she would have link to demons? Yes. But I think he cared for her and twisted his own brain to believe he loved her. But that sort of conditional love turns into hate very easily, just as it did later for him. His soul was ripe for the picking for demons because he only truly loved himself.

  345. Verra

I think Nick really did fall in love with her, and I also think he never stopped.

  346. charmaine

Hmmm im not sure he did really love rachel i think he used her to get what he wanted

  347. Kirsty

I don’t think he ever truely loved her, he is an opportunist and saw her as a means to an end.

  348. Randi Cutburth

Nick is a dirty rotten pus bucket. I’ve had a bad history with Nicks and looks Rachel has too. I think in the beginning he might have cared for her. But as Rachel’s powers progressed and Jax’s own individuality came about he just wanted to use everyone for his own gain.

  349. Elizabeth Hisaw

No I don’t think Nick really loved Rachel. He is a selfish man. I love these books by the way.

  350. Nick i think did love her at first (as much as he could love anyone) and then I think Rachel’s power scared him! He is more in love w/money and himself!

  351. Savannha Bowman

I think a very small thread within him loved her.

  352. Kayla Caroline

I don’t think he loved her, I think he loved what she could do for him.

  353. Daniel

No, I think that he isn’t able to love he only see a means to get what he wants or thinks he needs he is beyond a lost soul he does only what gains him something.

  354. DAulan Collins

I think Nick cared a great deal for Rachel, but he couldn’t truly love her the way he should had because he was to self centered and greedy. He would make her promises, make her think he is doing it all for her, but their was always a hidden agenda in everything he did.

  355. I really don’t think he loved her. I think he thought he loved her, but, really, Nick loves Nick. He wouldn’t keep using her the way he did if he loved her. Who would sacrifice parts from someone to a demon if they loved them? No-one. Nick was a tosser.

  356. Crystal

I don’t think Nick really loved Rachel. I think he was just grateful that she saved him, and allowed a relationship to form because it was beneficial to him. If he really loved her, he wouldn’t have been able to betray her like he did.

  357. Kat Rowles

I think that he loved her as much as he could love a person, but that’s not exactly what most people would consider actual love.

  358. BecH

In his own way he loved Rachel

  359. Dyan

I don’t think that Nick ever loved her, as a person. I do think that he loved what she could do and what she was capable of.

  360. DeAtHsSwEeTKiSs

I don’t think he loved her at all. He may have thought he did but there’s just some people that can only use people for gain. They think they love the person but just end up hurting them because they can’t love anyone but their selves. I think Nick is one of these people.

  361. Jill

I haven’t read the book yet. But love the cover

  362. Delane

I don’t think he loved her. I think that he saw an opportunity, then got in over his head (being made her familiar), because by now he was already trading pieces of her to Al and then he ran/left.

  363. I think that he thought he did. But only because of the way he perceived her to be. Once he found out about the switch with the focus, I think it knocked off his rose colored glasses, and his true character reasserted itself.

  364. Vicki Arce-Guillen

I think Nick loved the way he could use Rachel to help himself to a little fun.

  365. Ellen Garrett

Nick never loved her. He was only using another “item” to help him get what he wanted/needed. He may have thought he loved her, but you don’t use people you love that way.

  366. For a long time I believed Nick loved Rachel; but on the re-read and later books I think he used her. Nick is always out for number one, even when you don’t think he is. He used her information, he betrayed her in the worst way and kept doing it.

  367. Ed Sumstine

Nick loves Nick – no one and nothing else. He’s a true sociopath.

  368. John Lay

I think Nick loved Rachel for what he thought she could do for him but he definitely never put her first or was willing to truly put his ass on the line for her.

  369. Erin Johnson

I think his love for himself outweighed any connection he could have to anyone else and that he was fooling himself to think he could really love Rachel.

  370. Kris Chester

I think he did love her. But like most men there is something more important in his life :P

  371. No I don’t think Nick truly loved Rachel…

  372. Stacey McCue

No I don’t think he really loved her…he loved what she represented and what he could get from her.

  373. angie white

I think in nicks own way he did love rache, he just a really messed up person lol

  374. I think Nick did love her but not as much as he loved himself.

  375. Arline Babka

He “loved” her when he thought he could use her and she would be compliant. When she showed she was capable of making her own decisions she was just another “demon” to him.

  376. Madeline

I wish that I could say that he loved her… but I do not think that all men have the capacity to love someone. Nick is one of those people. So no I do not think that Nick loved Rachel.

  377. Frances McKenna

I doubt he did. In hindsight, when rereading the series, it seems he used her from the beginning.

  378. Amanda

Oh Nick. What a piece of work. At the beginning of the series I genuinely thought that Nick had strong feelings for Rachel–maybe even loved her–but as time went on I realized that, while he may have cared for her, it was in a “this relationship doesn’t come into conflict with my ambitions” sort of way. I don’t think he loved her. I’m not convinced that he knows what it is to love another. He’s so quick to betray relationships and sacrifice them to achieve his own ends. That’s not love at all. Thank you for the giveaway!! I’m getting desperate for The Undead Pool to come out!.

  379. Kassandra Johnson

In as much as he can love someone besides himself, I think Nick loved Rachel, but I think he definitely loves himself and his thieving lifestyle way more.

  380. kristen springer

I don’t think he did. Loong out for #1 from the start.

  381. Amy

I think what started as appreciation, awe, and even a little bit of disbelief when she first rescued him from the fights did turn into love. Or Nick’s definition of love at least- because I don’t think he actively schemed to sell her out throughout their entire relationship. Just when the opportunity presented itself or when it became convenient for him to do so. I remember genuinely liking the guy in the earlier books and I’d like to think it wasn’t all an act on his part otherwise he’d had us all fooled.

  382. Siobhan

I believe Nick thought he was in love with Rachel, although his concept of love is probably very different from Rachel’s :-)

  383. I think that by the time Fistful of Charms rolls around Nick has lost any love for Rachel. I’m not super sure he was ever really capable of love though there are times when he seems to come close before the big ole familiar mess. So in Mackinaw he was using her, any romantic attempts were cause she was convenient and Rachel deserves more than that so yay on her finally not falling for it!

  384. Laura Stratton

I think Nick cared about Rachel as much as he could, but he LOVES himself too much to honestly love another person. He’s too worried about his own skin and his safety to think twice about Rachel’s.

  385. Melissa K

I think he had feelings for her! There’s gotta be some connection with someone who saved your life! But didn’t last too long when his true colors started to show =[

  386. Jennifer Milligan

I think he loved her as much as he was capable of loving something that wasn’t old and magic and inanimate. Sadly, old books and artifacts would always have been first in his affections.

  387. Konnie Cronk

I do think Nick loved Rachel though I don’t believe he truly knows what love is. Nick loved his games more and couldn’t give up his own wants.

  388. Cryss Thain

I don’t see that Nick loved Rachel, ever. He had a use for her as a witch and did what was needed to access her power and make her pay for calling up Al. The opposite of love is indifference, he’s a cad and getting even is part of his gaming.

  389. Rayann B.

He loved her as much as he could love someone other than himself. He just loved money and being a thief more.

  390. Tracey

I think Nick loved Rachel. But, I think he lost sight of it and became consumed with the focus.

  391. Bruce Merkley

I think that Nick didn’t really love her but thought he did…hormones sometimes be deceiving

  392. Richard Ervin

I have been reading these comments, here is my two-cents. Yes, yes he did. He may not have been all that truthful to her, but when he thought she had died…well he was devastated. The flower he left was a simple yet painful symbol. Nick’s reaction to her afterwords is akin to feeling like she abandoned him for Kisten. It is actually a well done arc as mistakes were made and look what happened.

  393. I think Nick falls in that box of not knowing a good thing when they have it. I think he truly cared about Rachel. There can be no disputing that there was a connection between them and he could have grown to love her with time. If only he could get out of his own way I felt like he’s good at self sabotage and doesn’t even realize that he’s doing it until its to late. I believe he cared for her deeply, although his actions if left to stand on there own don’t lean much in his favor. He saw Rachel for all her qualities powerful, stubborn, sexy, loyal, and to trusting making her all the more appealing to him. Unfortunately Nick is all about what he can do to further himself along, since he can only seem to manage to worry about himself first there left no room for Rachel in his life.

  394. sara

I really think that Nick-k was just using Rachel for his own gain.

  395. david dumanski

Yes i believe Nick loved her to some degree the only way he knew how to love but he definitely loved himself and his needs more. Otherwise he wouldn’t sold her out for his own personal gains and then hated her because he couldn’t best her in his own games.

  396. I’m not up to that part in the book yet. So far Rache is surrounded by eye-candy (Jenks and Marshall) ;] but so far I think Nick really cared about Rachel. Maybe he could have loved her, but he let his greed take over and lead his life.

  397. I think in the beginning Nick had some kind of feelings for Rachel, but it wasn’t love. His selfishness and greed got overpowered what ever feelings he did have – but love doesn’t do that. Love is the opposite of selfishness.

  398. Roxanne Denny

I think nick really cared for Rachel but when he realised how much power she has he cared for her as a valuable item as opposed to someone he was in a relationship with.

  399. Chelsea

I think he loved her, just never more then the game.

  400. Julie Barker

I think nick tried to love Rachel but the fact that she has far more power than him made him super jealous and that jealousy turned what ever love he did feel into something ugly.

  401. chelsie Russell

I would have to say he probably could have loved her. He seemed to be drawn to her in some significant way and if you think about it, it could have been because of all of the demon contracts he’s made. Without fully realizing who Rachel was he began to feel something for her but when he found out she was a demon instead of a witch his hatred for all the other demons overcame his passion for the girl he once thought he could love. So all-in-all he didn’t love her but he did have feelings for her.

  402. Chelsea S.

I think he did, but I think his definition of love and Rachel’s are not the same. Fame, power, and greed are much more important to him than love. And love, even the platonic kind, is more important than anything else for Rachel.

  403. little

I think he loved her in his own sick, twisted, Nick way

  404. Nick never loved the person Rachel, he loved the power the witch has. He was always a bit jealous in the beginning and became down right envious of her magical power as the story continued on.

  405. I think Nick THOUGHT he loved rachel. But love as most people would define is the ultimate giving of slef and Nick was never able to give all of himself to anyone. He alwasy held back part of himself. While Rachel would give all of herself or anyone . She is the example of what love Nicky couldnt give her. She gave of herself , and her whole self, while Nick had his secrets and half truths. I think it was her loving ways and moral ways of living that made him second guess if he was in love with her or in love with the idea of being in love with her.

  406. I think Nick did love Rachel as much as he was able and I believe that’s one of the reasons he does some of the things he does in later books. I really liked Nick at first, and I find myself feeling kinda sorry for him at times too, every time I get a glimpse into how messed up he is. Sad for him that he doesn’t get it.

  407. Susan McLeish

Nick never loved the person Rachel, he loved the power the witch has. He was always a bit jealous in the beginning and became down right envious of her magical power as the story continued on.

  408. SMH

As much as he was able he probably loved Rachel. His personal goals trumped any other feelings he had and these goals will always win out.

  409. Yes, I think Nick loved her as much as he could love a person. But with greed he loves money more.

  410. Erica Dixon

I do think Nick loved Rachel, but he’s missing something that allows him to love with his soul. And that kind of half ass love just isn’t enough.

  411. Kelly E Harrison

I think Nick was genuine in his intentions toward Rachel, at least at first, but he was never completely honest about who he was with her… which I think compromised whatever love he did have for her.

  412. vicki martin

Honestly, Nick did not love Rachel. Nick used Rachel to further his own means and obsession with demons. Once he realized that Al was interested in Rachel, he sold her out by giving Al information on her.

  413. Becca

Did Nick truly loved Rachel up until he found out the focus had been switched? Eh, I’m iffy. He cared about her, maybe really liked certain things about her (powerful, sexy, loyal, plus a red head- gotta love red heads) but I think he always loved himself more than Rachel, or anyone else for that matter.

  414. trebor07@hotmail.com

I think he did love her. As much as he could. But let his own intrest get in the way.

  415. jonnie

I believed her loved her, then let his greed, for power overcome him.

  416. No, Nick never loved Rachel. She was a means to an end for him. Where she was reluctant to treat with demons and she constantly questioned, “Am I being a White Witch or a Black one?”, Nick welcomed the demon interaction for the power he perceived it giving him. Any time he shows(ed?) up, I knew it spelled trouble for Rachel.

Despite all the loves she’s had, I think Trent is her destiny and direction. All the others before him only helped her find her true self so she could recognize the Trent-shaped hole in her life. (But I still hoped fervently that she would work it out with Ivy. *sigh* HEY! How about Rachel, Trent *and* Ivy? Could that work? Hehehehe)

    Anne.

  417. I think he thinks he loved her, but wasn’t a true, unselfish type of love.

  418. I think he did, at least as much as he could and in the way he could, love is different for everyone so it is hard to judge.

  419. He didnt love her. He cared for her and he lusted for her but love is being there to protect, support, help, comfort. He loves himself and he doesnt care who he hurts, who he uses, who he lets down as long as he wins in the end. If you love someone you fight for them as much as you fight with them. Love isnt easy, always fun, or painless, but what loves gives you, what someone in loves gives you, is worth the fights, struggles, and the hard times. When you love someone you are in it for the long haul and you dont give up and screw over the person you love.

  420. Dennis Heizelman

He may have at one point but the money/info was more important to him so when that was jeapardized………

  421. Every time we see him I want him to really love her but he only cares about himself. He can’t have loved her if he sells information about her.

  422. Jen T

I see Nick as a self-serving character who loves danger and pushing moral boundaries. I feel that he found Rachel exciting and used her to get what he wanted in the moment. I’m not convinced that he ever really loved her, though.

  423. I believe he did – I still kind of felt sorry for crap for brains in this book, but i got over it pretty quickly :o

  424. christina

I think he did love her, but he love himself and what he could get from her more.

  425. Faith

I don’t think Nick can really love. I think he thought he loved her but really he was in it for what she could do for him with her magic, after that he started to hate her for not trusting him.

  426. Melicent Stossel

I think he loved her until he realized just how far he could use her.

  427. alexa

Nick loved her in his own biased way, he loved the way he could use her, he loved the power he could get through her, but not real and true love that he is incapable of, and doesn’t even realize of it

  428. It’s sad really. I knew for the most part they weren’t a going to stay together after she explained that they could never have kids. (Human & Witch) Not that I see Rachel wanting kids anytime soon; might have a twinge but that’s pretty much about it. I think Nick toyed with the idea of loving her but could never get over the fact that she would always have more power over him. He may toss his knowledge around but she has more quick-wit. I reiterate; so very sad.

  429. Xochitl small bear

I think he was in love with Rachel’s power an what it could achieve for him. Yet part of me believes he also loved her as a person, otherwise he could never hate her so dang intensely .

  430. I think Nick is entirely to selfish of a person to love anyone but himself, let alone comprehend an emotion as complex as love.

  431. Megan Barry

Like a lot of people already said, I think he loved her in his own way but his own selfishness got in the way. He always had an excuse as to why he betrayed her.

  432. Lisa

I think that Nick was far to selfish of a person to ever truly understand an emotion as complex as love.

  433. Crish Cottrill

I’m not sure that Nick could feel anything for anyone but himself, yet he knows what will work to manipulate Rachel. She.desires romance and he can fake it to get what he wants her to do.

  434. Dellena

I still don’t know if Nick ever loved Rachel. I think he was in love with what He knew she was, Trouble. Not Rachel herself. I don’t think he ever knew what love was. All he was hungry for was power, Rachel’s.

  435. Vicky

Maybe Nick loved Rach at first but that all ended when he found a way to use their relationship to his advantage.

  436. I always thought Nick was too selfish to truly love Rachel. Maybe because I have read the whole series. But I thought he was just using Rachel for what ever purpose at the time.

  437. wvcountrygirl1956

I think he did love her at first but then he let his greed come between them. I also think he started to take her for granted and thought she would forgive for anything he did.

  438. I can’t help but feel that Nick loved himself more than anyone else. If he did love Rachel, he sure was bad at showing it!

  439. Jessica R.

I be leave he had a emotional connection to Rach. True love no but you can see though his actions he did want to love her but he was stuck in love with some one else, himself.

  440. Dana

Nck loved her – but not more then himself and his personal ambitions.

  441. I think nick never truly love rachel. But I do think he was very grateful for her getting him out of the rat fights and d i think he tried to convinced himself that he loved her for it.
Ultimately Nick thought he was cleverer than everyone and his ego led him to start telling secrets to big Al. If he had love Rachael he wouldnt have betrayed her trust repeatedly

  442. Maybe he loved her in his own way but Nick always loved himself more!

  443. Nikkie

I do think nick loved Rachel the only way he knew how.

  444. Heather M.

I think Nick thought he loved her and loved her the best he could, (which isn’t completely possible because of the type of person he is). He cared, but bottom line, not real love, because he couldn’t put her first

  445. oh what a twisted point of view Nick has… I think in his own way he believed that he loved Rachel despite all the thinks he did.

  446. what a twisted point of view he has, and I am convinced that he thinks he loved her and that all he did was al a-okay…

  447. Virginia

I think he loved her until she let Ivy bite her. Even though he was going to use her anyway. He loved money and the scam more than anything else.

  448. paula bibbee

How could he love her he was to busy selling her bit by bit to Big Al.

  449. KimR

I think Nick did love her, but even he might not have realized the extent of it.

  450. wendy ward

I think he loved her as much as he was capable of.

  451. Unfortunately I haven’t read this far into the series yet, but I love the cover of the book, primarily the color choice makes it the most stunning. Please consider this my entry, I love your books ;-)

  452. Lexxie

I don’t think Nick ever really loved Rachel. He lied to her so much and so often…and compromised her safety over and over again without a second thought. I think when it comes down to it, he’s too selfish to love someone else

  453. anthony

Yes I think he loved her as much as he could

  454. Andrea

If he did love her I don’t think he was very good at showing it. Even if it was in his own way. More of a twisted love, perhaps.

  455. Lindsey

I haven’t had the money to read any of your books yet. :( I always love your covers. I REALLY want to read them.

  456. lvlocalgirl

Yes. Nick did love Rachel. I think he mistakenly thought he’d found a sympathetic heart to his own, that she might fudge on the rules and blur the lines etc as much as him given time….when he found he was wrong…well I think that’s what fuels all his choices regarding her later.

  457. Jan V

Ahh N-n-nick. There’s no doubt the man has issues. But he’s also very smart. I think he cared for Rachel. And knowing how she felt about him, he used that to his advantage.
It broke my heart to see Rachel so hurt and lost when he left. But I’m also glad he did, cause that left the door wide open for my beloved Kisten.

  458. Shawn Akers

Nick loved Rachel, but in the end I feel his need to obtain rare artifacts was more important to him.

  459. Gina N.

I think at one point he did love her, otherwise it wouldn’t have taken her zapping him as a familiar for him to have run away. He doesn’t seem to fear danger but even in the first book Rachel was way too dangerous unless you were a living-vampire or a pixie. So I think there was love, at least initially, but also deceit and thievery mixed in.

  460. whitewolfreads

Well as much as Nick is able to love anyone else but himself, I think he loved the idea of being with a witch so he could then use her. But maybe with Rachel he got too close to the real thing and that just freaked him out a bit.

  461. vampedchik

I think he did as much as he was able too.

  462. Katherine S.

Hmmm… Nick. Well I think yes he did love Rachel, in his mind, in the beginning but got increasingly lost/wrapped up further in himself. We all define love differently for ourselves, Nick too.

  463. Ben Wolfe

Well…I’m big on short, tight dresses that show off a great figure and gorgeous ass, but add to that backless and great legs and…hang on a sec…I got lost. Could get just as lost in a pair of sexy eyes looking at me though. Hey! I’m a guy. Cut me some slack, will ya?!?

  464. Sari

Nick to me, never really loved Rachel. I don’t even think he can truly love someone. He is thief and a liar. His always hiding and on the run, both physically and mentally. He has no room for love. His selfish and only thinks about his survival, thus he was incapable of truly loving Rachel.

  465. Jen

I think he had real feelings for her at first, before she became just another piece to his plans.

  466. Becky

I think Nick loved Rachel in his way. I found the way he loved was very selfish and he would always love himself and making a buck more. In the early books I felt both him and Ivy had this selfishness to the love they professed to have whereas Rachel’s brand of love was more selfless.
It’s one of the reasons I have been warming to Trent over the books because, as we’ve got to see his motives, he always seems to be putting other people’s needs above his own. In this way him and Rachel are very similar and suited, but it feels like this trait could prevent them from being together in the long run.

  467. dblclickit

The covers of your books have been nothing shy of Wow in terms of eye candy, no question there. But I have to be honest & admit I’m pitching an entry in here really on my wife’s behalf since she’s the one that reads all your books and put this at the top of her wish list for this Christmas. So don your Santa cap and here’s hoping the random generator looks our way! :)

  468. Amanda

I think Nick was more in love with his idea of Rachel than he was with her as a person. I dont believe he ever loved her for qho she was, or all that she was.

  469. Christi Green

I think he did love her as much as he was able to love. Nick & tht relationship always kind of confused me as he really seemed to care for Rachel.

  470. Nick started out loving what Rachel could give him, and as all sociopaths (to me he shows all the signs) he treats her like a tool to be used. When that tool is used up or broken, its in the bin and on to the next. To be honest, the only true emotion Nick shows is when she is done with him before he’s done with her… then he goes nuts and shows his true colors!!!

  471. Christian

I think he loved the thrill or the danger of being with her more than anything.

  472. I think he was infatuated with her, especially at first, but I think she was mostly just a means to an end. I don’t believe he was capable of real love.

  473. Karen Mann

Love? No. Liked? Sure. Lust? Probably. But no, I don’t think he loved her. Intense emotions tend to remain intense, with love often flipping to hate. Look at Rachel’s reactions to Nick in later books! THERE is some intense emotion!

  474. Katy McCleary

I think he cared about her, but I don’t know that he ever loved her.

  475. Mike

Nick loved her and probably always will. He just loved money and power more.

  476. Charity

I don’t think it was always a scam but I also don’t think he ever really loved anyone other than himself.

  477. Roger

I’d say any feelings he had died when she made him her familiar. By this book he sees Rachel as a tool rather than someone he once cared for.

  478. kris

Yes, I think Nick did love Rachel, but not enough to understand what love really means.

  479. Angela Bright

I believe Nick loves Nick. Love is supposed to be truly selfless. You should care about what happens to the other than about yourself. Nick was always worried about covering his own butt. Nick was willing to help out as long as it doesn’t endanger his own hide.

  480. Diana

I really don’t know what was the definition of love for a guy. I believed he loved Rachel but I don’t think he was capable of love. Maybe he loved the idea of love until he found he love his ways more than Rachel.

  481. Sarah M.

I honestly think Nick was far too self-serving to really care about Rachel. It felt like it was all about his endgame and playing on Rachel’s emotions worked for him.

  482. He loved her in the only way he knew how.

  483. Candy Golden

I think Nick loved Rachel as much as he was capable of loving her. Nick was obsessive about his greedy nature, and his objectives, and that overrode all else.

  484. Claudia

I don’t know if I would call it love, but Nick did have certain feelings for Rachel. He cared about her, but Nick was too selfish. He would throw Rachel into harm’s way if it would help him get what he needed. If he truly loved her, he would be more selfless and not only care about what would benefit him. Rachel deserves way more than what Nick had to offer.

  485. Kristi

I think that he was a very good liar. He saw something that he could use for his own gain, and convinced her he loved her so that she would stick around. This allowed him access to information that he could sell to demons. No I don’t think he ever truly loved her.

  486. In his own way, I think Nick did what he always felt was right. As for loving Rachel, absolutely, he just never understood why what he did was shady, and didn’t think about the consequences of his actions, definitely never thought about how they would affect her.

  487. Emily Flora

Nick loved her yes, but in a very pathetic way. He really couldn’t ever be an equal to Rachel and so he was always running away instead of to her. Even after he thought she was dead he was still using her, sending the package to her. And really. If you truly loved someone like Rachel, you wouldn’t just believe the newspaper and a demon that she was dead, you’d at least talk to Ivy or Jenks to confirm.

  488. traelynn9

I think that he used Rachel and took as much as he could from her. That was his way of loving her. It sounds like he was never taught how to love.

  489. Diana Spurlock

No. I don’t think Nick loved Rachel. It was all about the end game and having some fun on the way to it.

  490. I think that he thought he loved her.

  491. regan hinson

Yes – i think Nick loved Rachel to begin with but he let his sneaky wrong life mess things up.

  492. esperanza

There may have been a time that Nick thought he loved Rachel. Loved that she was there to help him get what he wanted, loved that there were things that they can do together that he couldn’t do with others. It was when Rachel found out about all the bad that was Nick, the way he used her, that she realized that Nick was not for her. Even when Nick came back, he never really came back for her. Not for her forgiveness or absolution, but because there was always something more. Something more that he needed from her, whether she knew it or not. So NO, Nick never really loved Rachel. He only loved what they can do together and how far he could go.

  493. T.Acosta

He was looking for power and could have had the greatest power of all.Love.

  494. Sara

I think for the most part he was using Rachel, but deep down he loved her as much as he could love another person.

  495. Grace

Nick loved Rachel as a tool. What an interesting contrast to Trent who says to Rachel ‘You are not a tool Rachel. I’ve never thought of you that way’.

  496. I think he did love her but I also think he didn’t know her by the end.

  497. Susan S.

I think Nick loved Rachel in his own way.

  498. Janet H

I think Nick loved Rachel as much as he was capable of loving anyone other than himself.

  499. I don’t think he really loved her. She was a means to an end for him, as sad as that is. Love all of your books!

  500. I think as much as he might want to love her, he was more enamored with the idea of her and the status she brought to him. In a way she had what he desired most – true power, where his was borrowed or stolen, hers was her own.

  501. r holley

I think Nick loved Rachel but he needs power more than he needs her

  502. Liz Scott

I think that Nick liked the idea of of a human/witch couple. He found Rachel easy to “use” and then forget till he needed her for one of his schemes.

  503. I think Nick does love Rachel but loves himself and power more.

  504. Michelle

No, Nick loved Nick. I thin there was some kind of connection at one time but I’m not sure I could stretch and call it love. I think Nick wanted Rach for his own reasons but I don’t think his intent was to use her. He probably thought he loved her at one point but he is too twisted to love anyone.

  505. Jonathan Cook

Tough one… It is my opinion that Nick has sociopathic tendencies, so were the question, ‘did Nick love Rachel,’ I would say no. Yet, that is not the question. I do believe that Nick, at one point, loved Rachel as much as Nick is capable of loving another person. Still, that clearly was not enough. Kisten really loved Rachel. Ivy really loves Rachel. Ceri really loved Rachel. Jenks really loves Rachel. Trent even loves Rachel… Nick, not so much.

Alright, I’m off to vote for the goodreads thing. Have a wonderful day!

  506. Sian Young

Nick loved Rachel in his own unique way… but it wasn’t strong enough to stop him from using her….

  507. renee pierce

Yes. He did love her but not as much as he loves himself.

  508. Cate aka absolutartist1

He loves her, but doesn’t LOVE her. IMHO

  509. Kathleen Langlo

I think Nick may have loved Rachel, but it would never be enough for him. He needs power more than he needs anything else and he shows that with what he does to Rachel. He is all about Nick and nothing will ever change that.

  510. Jer

Nick thought he loved Rachel.. as much as he could-in his own way.

  511. Erin C

Nick loved the idea of loving Rachel… however he seems unable to really love a person over his love of power…

  512. Hannah

He might have thought did but he loved himself and his ambition much more than he could love her (or anyone). I think he more loved the idea of being in love with her.

  513. Neitkopf

No. I don’t think Nick is capable of loving anyone, including himself. I believe he cared about her but all his issues took up too much of his mind and heart to every truly let Rachel, or anyone, in.

  514. sinnerella

I do believe Nick loved Rachel, but I also believe that Nick’s greed and need to be in control of everything at all times and his inability to commit to anything for long periods of time won out over that love.

  515. Ginny

I think Nick loved what Rachel could do for him. He was incapable of loving her as a person.

  516. I think Nick did love Rachel, he just loved majic and power more.

  517. I’m not sure Nick is capable of loving anyone but himself! I don’t think he can stand the fact that she is growing into her own power and leaving him in the dust.

  518. Jordan Stoner

I think Nick wanted to love Rachel but his desire and ambitions wouldn’t allow him to love anyone other than himself and power.

  519. Nick was always a wee bit creepy to me…too ‘flexible’ in his approach to life and ‘friends’

  520. Stacey Skelton

I don’t think Nick has ever loved anyone as much as he loves himself. He “likes” people as long as he can get something out of the relationship.

  521. Pam M

Yes, I think he did love her…. Up until he realized he couldn’t control her and that she was “stronger” than him.

  522. I don’t think he did. He’s too selfish to love anyone else.

  523. Gina Barry

I think he loved her by association. Meaning he had the best of all things while with her. A relationship, knowledge, adventure but his greed and search for power overcast any feelings that he may have had. Although his later vindictiveness and spite does show he cared for to an extent.

  524. I think he loved her when he would take the time to think about it and wasn’t preoccupied with doing something for himself. But when he had her, he took her for granted.

  525. I think Nick loved Rachel and still does. Unfortunately his greed for knowledge and power is higher than his love. He never thought selling information on Rachel was wrong because he never gave away anything to “personal” and he though Rachel would be able to see through that. To bad he is the type that never learns.

  526. Christopher

I think Nick was always using her. He just seems too much of an ego maniac that it seems impossible for him to love anyone but himself. Plus if he had loved her he wouldn’t have been selling secrets about her to Al.

  527. Abbie

I think Nick did love Rachel in his own way, but his desire for magic and being more than who he was as a human overload that love.

  528. Beth

Of course I loved Ray-Ray! But a guys’s gotta look out for #1 first, right? And she didn’t have to turn into such a righteous prig, did she? I mean, I left when I did to pursue … ahem… several lucrative ventures. I had to, I was broke! I couldn’t tell her because the way she was going I was afraid she’d put on her preacher morals and turn me in! Must come from living in that church. But now… hey sister, the bitch stole the item that I was tortured for! I paid for that focus with my hide! And she’s got the chutzpah to call ME a thief! She deserves whatever she gets, IMO.
    Nick

  529. Alicia

Nope. I think he found her attractive and interesting and useful, but I don’t think he loved her, way too selfish to love.

  530. I think maybe – in the beginning – there was a chance he did love (or could have loved) Rachel. But when she became more valuable to Al, and by virtue of that something even stranger (and stronger) than a witch, then I think he began to use her emotions as his leverage.

  531. Shannon

Yes, in as much as he could love someone, but he was evil and his love was tainted…

  532. Brandy Jones

Yes! I believe Nick loves Rachel in his own way of thinking, but his actions don’t show it to her at all. I think he believes that how he does things, says things and not so much as follows through with those said things; is his way of saying “I love U, Rachel” If he were to come back again in the last book I still say he would try and show how much he loves her somehow and screw it up in the process too! I’m positive that he will always love Rachel no matter what she says or does to him for his screw ups. But I don’t believe she loves him as much as he thinks either. Can’t wait for the next book to see how it goes!!

  533. Mirannda Lindberg

Nick is one of those characters that is incapable of loving someone else more than he loves himself. That said, I believe he did love Rachel as much as someone like him can love another person. At least, he believes he loved Rachel.
In the later books, I feel a lot of his decisions are made not only for what he believed would benefit him personally but also to spite Rachel for, in his mind, abandoning him/ being too smart for him to really fool.

  534. Amanda W

In the begining there was real love there not just on the fact it was new love, but Rach didn’t know as much about his past as it leaked out towards the end. Greed and power can be hurtful and tempting. I mean look at it from Nick’s postion he is a human who can call demons, he’s not a witch, a were, or a living vamp. So in his eyes selling those few tiny secrets to Al wouldn’t hurt Rach if he gained from it. What it comes down to is trust and granted those little things were small to Nick, they were big to Rach. When it came down to the Focus, it was blind greed at the end. He may have still loved Rach, but when you are a thief you are out for yourself and you will do or say anything in the end to get what you’re after no matter who gets hurt.

  535. Nicole G.

No, I don’t think he ever loved her. There was always something that he was using her for.

  536. jaci

I think nick loved rachel. Just not as much as he loved himself. I think in the begining he wanted to be able to be the better man and put Rachel before him. But he couldnt and once he found out what she was and that she would always have a target he used her.

  537. Cat M

Absolutely. Just like an addict, you can love someone and still use and abuse them, then make excuses for it.

  538. Calendula

I believe initially he loved her. He could not deal with the fact that her power was greater than his so he had to one up her so to speak. I think the real turning point was when he became her familiar. After that, he just became greedy and nasty. It was all downhill from there. I kept hoping when they ran into each other in the later books that somewhere down inside he would still have something left, but no, there was nothing there.

  539. Edwina Shaw

Yes, I think Nick loved Rachel. They were just too different for it to work. Rachel’s ethics and Nick’s were not the same. He also could not understand nor accept Rachel’s relationship with Ivy.

  540. Cathy Wicks

Nick love Rachel? Nick only loves Nick. He might have thought he loved her but doesn’t know what love is. Sad.

  541. Dawn W.

Yes, yes he did love her. I am an INTP, just like Nick. Trust me, he loved Rachel. The problem is that INTP’s cannot turn off their brain. Unfortunately, crap-for-brains really did have crap for brains. He was always scheming and planning, far into the future. So, while he did love her, he couldn’t stop scheming about how he could use her.

  542. Kelli L.

I don’t think Nick has the capacity to love. Having said that, i think he might have some feelings towards Rachel but the greed won out over all. He used Rachel. 😕

  543. kerri mckeithan

I do believe he loved Rachel and it was just convient that she could spell and take care of herself.

  544. Nicole

I think that the feelings Nick had for Rachel was his definition of love.

  545. kelsey terhune

i think he loved what she could do for him, because the only love he has is to himself.

  546. Tiffers

I think Nick loved Rachel because she was rare. He seemed to love all things rare.

  547. I think that Nick loved her as much as he was capable. Love is different for everyone and it comes harder for some as well.

  548. Brett Christensen

I don’t think Nick knew how to love someone, because he didn’t even like himself.

  549. I think Nick always was looking at for number one the entire time.

  550. Rachel Weber

He never loved her. Rachel was just a novelty to him.

  551. I think that Nick thought he loved Rachel and as much as *he* believed it, it was true.

  552. Amy Alemanm

Nick used Rachel I don’t think he ever really loved anyone but himself

  553. Karen Schell

Nick never loved her – he and Al had been stalking and studying her for awhile. Both Al and Nick love to do research and Al must have stumbled across something in the library and decided to see if his instinct’s were correct on Rachel’s and Trent’s dad’s experiments. Nick, for whatever stupid reason crossed his mind, decided to summon a demon and Al, gleeful that a human was trying to summon him, from all places, where Rachel Mariana Morgan lives. Al decided to answer Nick’s summonings, playing by his rules, to get more information on Rachel. So, no, Nick never loved Rachel – he was/is Al’s toy all along.

    • Karen Schell

In reading everybody else’s comments about Nick personality, I forgot that he had been bullied and tortured by the Interlander children all through school simply because he was human. He definitely did not love her. He talked a good game though.

  554. I think that Nick wanted to love her, and had himself convinced that he did, but is incapable of loving anyone who doesn’t fit into his twisted bubble of normality. Once she disillusioned him from believing that her universe revolved around him, he no longer wanted her.

  555. Ria

I think that he did, but he has never learned what it means to truly love a person.

  556. artgecko1

Love?? probably not but loyalty for rescuing him is likely

  557. I think, he believes what he feels for her was love.

  558. Anna

I do not think Nick ever loved Rachel.

  559. Tina

I think he loved her in a way, but I think he loved himself and power more.

  560. Javinder

I think he loved the idea of her more than anything.

  561. In the end I think the only person Nick truly loves is himself… Sad, but true.

  562. Jillian

    I don’t think he loved her. :(

  563. I believe that Nick liked the idea of loving Rachel but never truly loved her. He is too selfish to love anyone other than himself, unless he got something out of it. Even then, he would leave when he saw a better opportunity, as he has proven.

  564. Kayla Marcil

I think in the beginning, Nick loved her in his own weird way but was just using her in the end.

  565. Cathy S

Nick only loved the things that Rachel could bring him. Look at Al, Nick used the information he learned during the course of their relationship to buy information he used to procure. Nick may have, in a twisted way, had some sort of emotional attachment to Rachel, but you don’t do things like that to the ones you love (sell personal information.)

  566. Brenda Rorie-Baety

I don’t think Nick could love anyone the way most ‘people’ do, but if there was a way, Yes I think Nick loved Rachel as much as he could! :0

  567. Nick’s love for Rachel was more of an ideal. He sold her out to Al then ran after the focus totally leaving her behind. I also felt sorry for Jenks losing his son to Nick’s love of adventure.

  568. Bonnie

I think he did as much as a narcissist can.

  569. samantha adams

Hes one of those charming no good for us guys that has no idea how to love anyone but himself.

  570. Leslie

Yes I believe he did, as much as he was able to, but nothing could change his innate personality and priorities.

  571. Stacy

I think is his own way he did love her, but greed one out.

  572. I think he did love Rachel but grew to hate her before the focus.

  573. Chris Roszkowski

I like to think that Nick truly loved Rachel, or at least he though he did. But cmon…if he did, he never would have sold any info on Rachel. He knew it was wrong, stupid cookie

  574. I think that he loved her as much as he could love anyone. But, he is very selfish and self-centered and power will always win over love for Nick.

  575. Christine

I think Nick thought he loved her. He discovered he loved himself more.

  576. Beth

No, He didn’t. He was using her. He loves only hisself.

    • Laura K Thorpe

I think in his mind he loved her. In his mind, he made sacrifices and she was the one who wronged him. His mind works differently than most normal people’s, lol, and so no- he didn’t actually love her. He loved the idea of her, her power and being with someone that powerful and what he could gain from it. Ultimately, he was a selfish bastard.

  577. Alia Hampton

I don’t think he loved her at first..I believe he looked her like a mark ..an easy access pass…to the arcane…he grew to love her in his own warped misguided way.

  578. Jimena Inda

I think he did love her on his own way, but when he saw her change and not follow the path he wanted, he preferred to use her as he knew she would take into consideration their relationship when they faced each other again.

  579. jared wolfe

i think that nick loved her to a point, probibly until the whole focus incident. I mean it does take some kind of love for someone to make a deal with big al and take his mark to save her live

  580. Amy Hudson

Nick has no idea what love is. Never really liked him. Good character, bad friend.

  581. Sam

I think Nick admired her power and liked being with her, probably not love though.

  582. Amy W

I don’t think Nick is capable of real love, but I think he wanted to love her and thought he loved her until he was more afraid of her.

  583. I think that we wanted to believe Nick loved her. I know that I was hoping that he loved her and she had someone since Kisten died. But when it came down to finally proving what she meant to him and proving his feelings, Nick chose power over love. At the beginning I think he loved her but as time went on and the more power he experienced, the more he became consumed by the need for more. I think that he isn’t capable of loving someone other than himself now, the need for power has corrupted him completely.

  584. Triplecat2002

No Nick is not truly capable of loving anyone but himself.

  585. I have a hard time believing that Nick truly loves anyone but himself. I imagine he loved her in his own way, but I don’t honestly feel he is terribly capable of caring for anyone as much as he cares for himself.

  586. Michaela

I think he loved the idea of Rachel, but not the real Rachel, if that makes any sense.

  587. Tanja

I think at the very beginning in his very own way Nick-k-k-k kind of loved Rachel. I believe he was fascinated by her behavior and such, although I probably never would speak about ‘true love’. Nick is just too self-centered for that kind of stuff….

  588. Jenny T

I believe that Nick did love Rachel in his own way or at least he thought he did.

  589. staci

As much bad as he has done to her…he did or at least tried to do good for her also…I think he thinks he loves her…however he does not seem to understand love…maybe the problem is that he does not love himself and if you cannot love yourself you can not love others.

  590. I don’t think loved Rachel in a romantic way. But he did care for her maybe as a means to steal more.

  591. dlmcgeen

I think Nick loved the idea of being with someone like Rachel.

  592. I don’t know if he loved her. He says he did, and in his warped mind maybe he thinks he did. I think he was intrigued with her, but ultimately he was scared of her. How do you love someone that scares the crap out of you?

  593. Julia

Some how, deep down, I think Nick did truely love Rachael at first. However, I think once he became her familiar, I think his fear of her overpowered the love. And then he was just a little shit. He always loved her just a pinch, but the love was not remotely important enough to overcome his greed. The little crapforbrains.

  594. LeAnne B

Maybe at first, then he was driven by his own desires and greed.I have an ex that is a lot like Nick… lol

  595. Trudy

He loved her for saving him, for being similar to him, but he wasn’t in love with her. He can’t truly love anyone but himself. He risks anything and everything to get his high, be it knowledge or something tangible.

  596. Shelley M.

Oh Nick…I think he really did love Rachel in his own twisted way.

  597. Jana B

I think Nick still loves her, just not necessarily enough to help him be a good person. Thanks for the giveaway!

  598. I think Nice did love Rachel, but I think because he was a damaged person he only knew how to love so far and the switch of the focus was what got in the way. He love for himself got in the way and I think in his mind Rachel betrayed him and he could no long trust her to think like he did, and without trust there is no love.

  599. charles taylor

He loved her but was out for what benefitted him too

  600. Nick loved her in his own way, but he was too selfish and greedy for it to be pure enough to last.

  601. Yeah, my read is that Nick did love Rache, but this was over-ridden by his innate greed and fear.

  602. Harrie

I think he loved her – but it seems to me it was his own way. Love, I think, is subjective and differs from person to person. There’s no one “norm”.

  603. Krystal

She thought he did and maybe he wanted to, but he never loved her or anyone else.

  604. I don’t think Nick ever truly loved her. I think he may have liked her, until he learned how she could benefit him. Nick is my favourite character to hate. Lol.

  605. Marty Tool

I think he loved her in a way, but mostly for what she could teach him. He certainly went for revenge against her, and showed her repeatedly how she hurt him, both by the loss of her love and loss of her knowledge. Of course that makes him a good enemy to her, and those around her, but doesn’t prove that he really was in love with her.

  606. Nichole Zito

I believe that Nick probably did love Rachel. Or at least he loved the idea of her. He loved her as much as I feel someone with so many problems could love someone. He always comes first though of coarse.

  607. Cat 584

In my opinion, Nick did love Rachel for a while, but he loved himself and his own interests more. I don’t think he is capable of truly and deeply loving anyone and that is sad. His life, as we view it throughout the books, could have had so much more happiness in it if he was not so selfish.

  608. MJB

I have not read this book yet. It does look appealing however.

  609. I go both ways on this one!! I tend to lean more towards him caring for her…I dont think he ever loved her though! I think he was at a point of caring deeply for her in the dating process. However I think he realized she could be a tool before he ever fell in love! You dont do things like he does to those you really love! She became a means for him before he had a chance to love her… :0(

  610. Anja

I think he did love her, but only in his kinda twisted way. And when it got between him and money, he decided to get what he liked more…

  611. June

Nick loved Rachel as much as he could love anyone but he had a limited ability to love.

  612. Jennifer Roy

Nick may have loved her at the beginning, yet greed and desire quickly overrode his feelings, causing Rachel to become a tool to further his wants.

  613. Stephanie Mcguckin

I’m not sure Nick is capable of loving anyone. I think he thought he loved her but what he really loved was her ability as a witch.

  614. Martin

Nick didn’t love Rachel. Nick saw Rachel as a means to his own ends.

  615. There is no way that Nick ever loved Rachel. He was only infatuated with her. But I guess in his messed up mind that probably means love.

  616. Peggy Acevedo

I think he loved how smart, strong, and powerful she is and he saw an opportunity to ride her coat-tails. I think he was jealous and started to resent her, which turned to spite. I don’t think he ever loved her.

  617. Lizz

I think he loved her but he loved himself and his greed more.

  618. Dawna Preston

nick cant love anyone but him self

  619. Beth

I don’t think Nick can love anyone. He might of thought he loved Rachel, but when it came down to it it was all about Nick.

  620. Anne

I think he loved her in his own way but he loved being a thief much more.

  621. In his own way, he did love her. By the time the focus was switched, he had moved from love to manipulation. She was a tool for him to use. And not much more.

  622. Christy

Nick only loved the power he could achieve through using Rachel.

  623. Kelly

I do think that Nick loved her as much as he was capable of.

  624. NancyLynn Southard

I think Nick did/does love Rachel in his own sick little way. He wanted her to accept him & love him even though he was a criminal and when she couldn’t, he just did things to make her hate him, which she did, easily, but I think he’s just hurt that she couldn’t accept him and deep down he still loves her, though we all know how quickly love can turn to hate. A thin line here.

  625. Rebecca

I think he truly loved Rachel, but he let his greed and self centered attitude take over and couldn’t see past it to what a great woman he had.

  626. julia warner

I think Nick did love her as much as he could considering he was out for himself from the beginning and Rachel refused to go along with his plans after all the summoning Al bit. If Nick would have only been there more for Rachel then himself it might have worked out better.

  627. Barbara Stephenson

He “loved” her for what he could get.

  628. Lindsay Conyers

I think Nick did love Rachel in the beginning, but as time went on it became more of what she could do for him and where she could take him in magic. Nick became power hungry and could no longer afford to care. Plus having a line pulled through him and being bound as a familiar was scary as hell.

  629. Tali B.

Nick loved Rachel but not as much that he loved his lifestyle n himself.

  630. Oh man…I think Nick originally thought he loved her, but the love for himself and what she could do for him won out. I’d like to believe that originally he thought he did anyway.

  631. Linda

I think he did in his own way.

  632. Jen W.

I think he loved her as much as he could, but he loved money more.

  633. Kate Raney

Nick, Nick, Nick. That guy, man. I think that he didn’t love Rachel so much as he loved the idea of her. If he truly loved her he wouldn’t be able to sell even her favorite color to Al, regardless of how innocuous he thought that sale was.

  634. Beverley Dear

I believe that Nick loved Rachel at first but his greed and love of stealing wore this away, particularly because of the demons he needed to involve in his schemes affected his personality and self worth. He still retains some fondness for her but the gap between their morality is now too wide.

  635. Amber Johnson

I think Nick did love Rachel at first but I don’t think love was enough for him. I think Rachel was a distraction from him being a thief and she wasn’t enough I don’t think he understood what love really meant or he would have sold Rachel’s secrets to Al

  636. Jamie Magrum

No I do not think that Nick ever loved her. He may have loved the idea of her, but he loved himself and challenge too much to much to have true feelings for another person.

  637. Nici B.

I think Nick loved Rachel, as much as he could love somebody, so not truly madly deeply / you are worth more to me than myself kind of love… He loved the idea of her being something he may could work with and use in time in his filed of work. (He did encourage her at one time that she needed to learn and become more, whereby now I am nor sure if this was for her own good or eventually his.) I do believe he hurt when he thought she died and I believe he did still hope they would get back together in FOC, until he realized that she would not follow his greed and “field of expertise”… His benefits/rush from greed, excitement and adrenaline fix would always come before Rachel’s benefits and well being.

  638. No, he didn’t lover her, he only loved what she could do for him.

  639. Tho I can’t say I like nick, I think he really did love her or at least thought he did..

  640. Lynn ~from Haverhill

Yes. But he loves himself more.

  641. I do not think Nick knew what real love is about. I think he loved her in his version of what love is. The fact that he gave a demon little tidbits about Rachel shows how little he really knows about love. It also showed how messed up his moral compass is.

  642. Bobbi Smith

Nick loved Rachel until the power of money and dominance took over his thoughts and his heart.

  643. Georgene Danjanic

I think Nick believed that he loved her in the beginning but he doesn’t know what real love is. Nick used Rachel whenever he could and was only in it for what he could get.

  644. Nope, I don’t think he did. He loved what he was getting from Al because of his ‘relationship’ with her but I never thought he loved her.

  645. Andrea Murdock

Hmmm…not sure if he can love anyone more than himself but for a moment in time he at least thought he loved her….before the obsessed with her began.

  646. Cheryl

I think Nick loves what Rachel can do for him

  647. Yes, but not enough to see past his own interests.

  648. sue

I don’t. Think Nick was capable of loving anyone but himself. So no, he didn’t love Rachel.

  649. Cheryl

I think he loved her, or he thought he did.

  650. Kat Bailey

I think he was attracted to her physically and saw a use for her magically, but I don’t think that love was ever truly a part of the equation.

  651. No, he didn’t love Rachel.

  652. Sara Gonzalez

I feel that for a moment Nick did truly love Rachel as much as he could. It shows in the little moment of concern he showed when he saw her on the island for the first time

  653. Erin Pierce

No way! He was just out for himself! He might have liked her a lot at first but no way was it love!

  654. Diane Aitken

I think he loved her at first, but they had grown apart by the time he moved and then all bets were off.

  655. Lavinna Kuberski

I think Nick loved Rachel but he loved himself more. I think he blamed Rachel for his own short comings.

  656. Sandra Guerfi

I think that the shred of decency left in his heart is why Nick did fall in love with Rachel. Unfortunately because of his past experiences he is unable to be strong enough to embrace and fight for her. He’s scared and the focus would give him power which he sees as safety. When Rachel threatens that, he chooses himself. You Can’t Hurt What You Can’t Touch.

  657. Katie V

I think Nick loved the idea of her, especially towards the end. But overall I think his greed wins everytime because he is definitely in love with that

  658. kothmia

What to think about crap for brains… I think this almost has to be divided into “before the line” and “after the line”. Before Rachel pulled the line through him, I think he loved her, in as much as he could. Remember, he was willing to walk away from Rachel if she wanted to be Ivy’s scion, but waited to see what Rachel’s answer was, and when it was No, he was willing to risk Ivy’s wrath to ‘rescue’ Rachel. I’m not sure that Rachel and Ivy would have been able to stop each other in that scene had Nick not stepped in with the copper spellpot. I think that shows that there was something there… Love? I think it’s as close to love as Nick could give since as so many have said… he was broken too.

After the line? She scared him. Scared him good. And he was never able to get over that. She showed him (without seeing it herself) just how much power she could wield. Granted, it gave him seizures and I could see that being a hard thing to get past… but he wasn’t willing to try. He emotionally distanced himself from her long before he thought she was dead. I think after she “died” he was more sorry that he couldn’t use his knowledge of her to buy information anymore than anything else…

  659. Trisha Boyer

I don’t believe Nick ever loved Rachel for the main reason the he didn’t respect her, also he constantly used her. He even stole away Jenk’s son and got him in a world of trouble. Rachel constantly bent over backwards for him and he just kept taking advantage of her. He had no respect for her as a person at all with all the stuff he did for her and kept from her… all he did was use her good nature and thats about it

  660. I feel like I could write an entire essay on this topic, citing references in each book and all. But I’ll try to contain myself.

First off I don’t believe at any time that Nick is capable of loving someone other than himself. I believe, that he believes that he cared (cares?) for her, but honestly I think from the beginning there has been a bit of what Rachel can do for him.

I mean she rescued him as a rat, nailed Trent (for a second) proving her intelligence. He knows her talent to stir a spell. He has someone to bounce demon texts off, pixies, and the list goes on.

He finds no compromise (or communication) with Rachel about his feelings about being her familiar, and instead just leaves.

He takes Jax, not even having the courtesy to express his remorse at Rachel’s death to Jenks. I mean, I can understand why he wouldn’t want to see Ivy, but not even to talk to Jenks. Uhg.

Then he sells bits and pieces of her to Al, long before she ‘dies’.

Again, I think that he believes he cares for her, even loves her. But if that is love, then save us all from it.

  661. Becka Knutson

I believe that Nick did love Rachel, but his greed over rides any other feelings he may have. He seems to be fueled by his greed.

  662. ashly

I don’t think Nick was really capable of loving anything. That being said, I think he loved the idea of Rachel. Anyone who truly loves someone could never treat that person they way nick treated Rachel.

  663. Mitchell Brashier

No, I don’t think he is capable of loving anybody but himself.

  664. Robert Stultz

No, Nick does not love Rachel. He’s an opportunistic bastard!

  665. Elyse Stevens

I don’t think that Nick ever loved Rachel, if she had fit into the box he had planned for her maybe he would have. But that isn’t really love.

  666. Scary Lee

Nick loved power more than Rachel.

  667. Erin W

I think he did in his own way but greedy got the best of him.

  668. Regina K. Martinez

Nicky’s love was selfish. I believe that he loved power and magic more. I don’t think he valued anyone other than himself, he only cared for people who could help him get closer to his goal of whatever he wanted, he was incapable of real love, which is very sad. I had hoped that he would have changed, but as in real life we can’t change people.

  669. Jenille

I believe perhaps in the desperate need that what little love he could muster up showed in Fist full of charms. But on any other occasion he cared or thought he cared. Example: giving her an out. Teaching her some of the tricks he learned on his own.

  670. Brandy

I think Nick only loves what others can do for him. He loved how powerful Rachel is and what she is capable of. He looked for a way to use her but never loved her like she needed to be loved.

  671. Nina Kiggans

No he didn’t love, he is only out for Nick.

  672. David Decker

Nick was selfish and not capable of loving anyone other than himself. He is a user and conman.

  673. Celeste Corp

I don’t think he ever loved Rachael.

  674. Danielle Dodson

I think he loved her, until his greed got in the way.

  675. I think Nick really did love Rachel but he loved what he did before he met her more.

  676. Kyla

I think he loved the idea of Rachel. I think it he this perfect vision of her in his mind of who she should be. He loved the power and the fact having her gave him a bargaining chip he would not otherwise have had. However, when she broke his vision of her and played his own game against him she was no longer who he wanted or needed

  677. Tammy Martine

No I do not think Nick loved Rachel…he just used her.

  678. Pamela

Nick truly believed he ‘loved’ Rachel at some point but in reality he just loved himself more than anything and valued his own dark practices more than he could have ever loved her. I just dislike Nick a lot hehe. I never trusted him…He smelled fishy from the very beginning.

  679. Liz

Ohhh Nick, I was just waiting for the ball to drop in this book in the read along. I think he thought he loved Rachel but once something so enticing as the focus gets in the way, he throws her under the bus.

  680. Mary Harmon

Nick loved Rachel but it wasn’t enough to make him change his ways. His obsession with dark magics and demons drives him in everything. Rachel added fuel to this desire so his feelings for her were only secondary.

  681. Nope- not believing that love is like that!

  682. Peggy

I think Nick THOUGHT he loved Rachel but not capable of that emotion. Nasty piece of work, it’s a shame Rachel sullied herself with him.

  683. melinda crider

In a nick way he did but the live of money he loved more

  684. Lori Franklin

I believe that Nick did love her in his own way, as much as he could, BECAUSE she was connected to the amulet…

  685. Nick loved Rachel but more for what she could bring to him than for herself. Nick’s love was very selfish!

  686. Catherine

I think Nick loved Rachel on some level, but he loved himself even more.

  687. Ellie

Well, I think he at least thought he loved her but I doubt that he can really love as he will never put someone else before himself

  688. Jana White

I think Nick was in love of the idea of what Rachel represents. So in his own way he was in love with her until she showed him what he didn’t want to see. That she to can be devious. Like switching the idols.

  689. Laura Hermes

I really kind of despise Nick as a “human being”. I’m gonna say no, he didn’t love Rachel. He probably thought he did but he is not mature enough of a person to selflessly love another person. I could go on and on but I won’t. :)

  690. Jennifer Hart

I think Nick loved Rachel as best as Nick COULD love Rachel. To a certain extent. Honestly, I think his love for magic really consumed him and his love for Rachel changed.

  691. Jennifer

I think that Nick tried to love Rachel, but I think that his lust/love for money and power were too strong for him to allow him the ability to really care for anyone other than himself.

  692. Nick loved Rachel as much as he loved any magical OBJECT. That’s about as good as he could do.

  693. Lorie Maw

I think that Nick did love Rachel as much as he was able to. However, I dont think that he was ever capable of loving her as she needed and deserved to be loved.

  694. Darlene

I would like to think Nick was at one point capable of loving Rachel. However, he seemed to always be using her for his own gain. I would say he got to a point that his own gain was more important than love.

  695. Heather fowler

I hope my comment went through its hard to see on my phone

  696. Tierra

Hmmm . Love is tricky . I think Nick loved Rachel as much as he could possibly love anyone but himself. I would like to say we do not hurt the people we love but we see it all the time in real life. He may have loved her but he would have never put her above his own gain.

  697. Tammie Seaborne

I do believe he loved Rachel. However, being the narcissistic bastard that he was, his own power mean way more than she ever could.

  698. ReneeS

I think he loved Rachel, at least at the beginning. Later, however, is another story…

  699. Too bad he turned out to be less honorable than I had hoped. He and Rachel made good vibes. Oh well.

  700. Justin T

I think he loved her, but couldn’t love her fully, I don’t think he is capable of that…

  701. Tammie Seaborne

I believe Nick did love Rachel, however, being the narcissistic bastard that he was…his own power meant way more to him than she ever could.

  702. Heather fowler

Nick may have ha some love in his heart but not for her, he used her then got rid of her. He just keeps doing what is best for him and in the it never worked out.

  703. kelly

No, looking back i don’t believe he “loved” her at all…I think Nick is a user..which he learned by growing up around the “monsters” in the Hallows…he learned survival skills and continues to use them on people he think would benefit him…hence Rachael…and her need to save and be loved for who she is…but he took it and threw it away basically….

  704. Vampyre

At first he liked her because of the adrenalin rush from having a shared near death experience. Later he “loved” her for her power. It was never real love.

  705. I think he did in his own twisted way. He has mind of a thief so he would never see giving away “little” bits as wrong.

  706. First, let me say my husband gave this book to me. It was the first book I read from the series and I fell in love with characters. (The used paperback he gave me is now falling apart; I have read it so many times!) Here is my answer to your question. Nick truly loves Rachel, and he believes he is doing right by her. However, as with all people, we are selfish creatures, and he is always looking for the next big score. And that lust for power, money and/or fame, overshadows the love he honestly feels for Rachel or anyone else in his life. But then again it probably didn’t help when she made him her familiar, but hey all witches make rookie mistakes, right?!? (snickers) But thank you, Kim, for sharing such a wondrous world and story with us!

  707. Danyel

When you add the qualifier as much as he can love a person, yes he loved her. But I think the only person Nick has ever actually loved is himself.

  708. MaryGeorge Whitney

I think that Nick thought he was in love with Rachel, that is until he figured out what he could get for himself. Then is was all about Nick.

  709. No, I think Nick was a selfish “user” right from the start. Obviously he found Rachel interesting, but not sure he’s capable of love.

  710. Kimberly

Yes I think he did love her in his own twisted way!

  711. Diana

I think Nick truly loved Rachel. It was evident in the way he spoke when she rescued him and he was a bit delirious. He was always out for himself though.

  712. I think he really did love her in the beginning until he saw how much he could gain from her.

  713. Josephine Curtis

I believe Nick cared for Rachel at first, but it went away by the time That she chased after him with Jenks for the Focus.

  714. Heather McNamara

I believe Nick did love Rachel in his on way. He just loved himself more, so no matter what happened between them he was always destined to use her for his own needs. I don’t think Nick ever had a healthy relationship, and Rachel was the closest he ever came, but couldn’t hold up his end.

  715. Cindy Aubert

I do believe that Nick loved Rachel in a very immature way. It was never a mature love that he had for her, he’s too self centered for that.

  716. Cindy Williams

Yes, I think he loved her, just not as much as himself.

  717. I do not think Nick ever loved anyone but himself. Never liked the guy.

  718. I think Nick loved Rachel, but I think he loves possessions that bring him power more.

  719. Patti

I think he did love her.

  720. Jenn Hoey

I think Nick loved Rachel as much as any selfish person could ever love someone. She will always come second to himself which in my book does not equate true love. But that doesn’t mean he can’t feel. He showed regret for his actions, remorse just didn’t stop him.

  721. He loved her as much as he could…just loved the pull of power and magic much much more.

  722. I think Nick loved Rachel, but he loves things that bring him power more.

  723. I think that Nick loved her, but he loved his own life more. He is so shocked that she doesn’t blindly trust him when she switches the focus.

It was “For A Few Demons More” that got me hooked on the series. Love them!

  724. For Nick, he loved her to the level that he could. Greed and power were stronger for him though….

  725. I wanted to believe that Nick really loved Rachel but as their story progresses, it becomes very clear that he is only driven by his own desires and ambitions and that Rachel was simply a means to an end. A painful lesson for Rachel, to be sure.

  726. Anne Stammen

I think Nick loved Rachel, but I think he loves things that bring him power more.

  727. yes more or less he did but he may not have know how to show it. he may have felt like if he told her the truth he would be stupid for it.

  728. Chrystal Swanson

I do think Nick loved Rachel, but I think he loved himself more.

  729. Sarah Barden

I don’t think Nick loved Rachel. He used her to much. I think he liked her up to a certain point but in the end it was all about what Nick wanted for Nick

  730. Danielle Leblanc Miller

I think Nick did love Racheal, but he’s just not a good person. He had no concept of true right and wrong and could never have had any future with Rachael. Ironically, I think he would have been a very successful demon in Al’s terms ( selfish, mean, and clever) better than Rachael.

  731. Nonie

To tell you the truth I really don’t think he loved her. I think that he loved the thrills of dating a witch and when the next thrilling thing came along he dropped her like a hot potatoe.

  732. I don’t think Nick loved Rachel. He may have cared for her, but if he truly loved her, he wouldn’t have been so awful.

  733. Raymond Heuer

“Truly love” is always difficult to determine. I think Nick liked the idea of a gf like Rachel, but his first loyalty, like most thieves, is to himself. That explains why he had no remorse about “sellng pieces of” Rachel to Al.

  734. Julie

Yes as much as he knew how.

  735. Anne Stammen

I think Nick loved Rachel. I also think Nick loved other things more than Rachel.

  736. StephanieGail

I don’t really think he did, I think he saw her as a means to an end. I think part of him wanted to actually love her but I’m not sure he was capable of that.

  737. I don’t think Nick can love anyone….except himself.

  738. Margaret

I think the jar that was so meaningful to Rachel shows that he cared about her. He sacrificed his feelings for personal gain and maybe self-preservation.

  739. Cindy

I believe Nick loved Rachel, but it was as unhealthy and twisted as Nick was. Nick was/is an addict and like most addict his greatest love his his next fix.

  740. No, he never loved her. He used her for his ends. I’m not sure that a person like Nick ever really knows what love is.

  741. I think he really really did. but magic is like a drug… he has to make that last score….

  742. I don’t think Nick was capable of love. He had some sort of connection to her and felt something, of course, but he was mostly just out for himself and what he could get out of it.

  743. Rhonda Stewart

A relationship born out of extreme circumstances such as Nick and Rachel’s was probably doomed from the start. I noticed severally people thought Nick was selfish and that was true, but, Rachel is always trying to find ways to push people’s buttons. Her goal was to survive no matter the cost to herself or others. I think that also speaks of selfishness. Rachel is drawn to toxic relationships. I don’t think either was truly in love.

  744. Dyann Herweh

I don’t think that Nick ever truly loved Rachel, even in his own way. I think that he always saw her as a means to get what he wanted.

  745. Lygia Dennison

I do believe he did love her in his own way, but his ambitions got in the way and clouded his judgement. People are selfish when you cut away the veneer.

  746. Sara

I’m convinced that Nick thought that he loved her.

  747. Teresa George

I think Nick loved Rachel for her power, for what she could potentially teach him or do for him. I think he wanted to love her, but wasn’t really capable of loving someone more than he loves himself. He seems to have a really high capacity for self-delusion.

  748. Carl Fox

As you said “As much as he can love a person” I think he did love Rachel. But his main love was himself, and the “idea” of having power.

  749. Donna Begley

I think he did in his own way, but he was always out for himself .

  750. A.B.

He was certainly fascinated by her, and maybe thought she was his perfect match. But I don’t think he ever loved her for real, his actions weren’t that of a man who truly loved someone.

But I do think Nick really did /believe/ he loved her and wanted to change for her but kind of knew she was always going to be better than him – both with the magic and the moral stuff.

  751. Sue S.

I think in his own mind Nick did love her – but he is kind of twisted and he definitely is out for only himself.

  752. Nick is scum and only wanted Rachel when he needed her.

  753. Nancy Bailey

I don’t think Nick is capable of loving anyone but himself. He may have thought he loved Rachel, she thought he did for sure, but he was using her for what he could get from Al.
As always actions speak louder than words and we show someone how much we love them by actions not just saying “I love you”. His actions towards Rachel have been nothing short of mean and single minded. Not that of someone in love with another.

  754. Staci S

I believe he loved we in his own way. Unfortunately being a on man, love wasn’t enough. He loved himself more. =(

  755. Tom W.

I think Nick loves Nick, and uses the goodness in Rachel to get what he wants.

  756. I think that he loved her in his own way, but I do think it turned into more of a love for what she could do for him more than loving her.

  757. Nicole Lehmann

I think at the beginning he did until he found out that he can use Rachael for his own personal gain and then it was just business after that. He used her to get what he wanted.

  758. Teri Winter

I don’t think Nick loved Rachel at all. I think it was a feeling of gratitude at being rescued to begin with and then he began to use her for her witchcraft and to get whatever he could get no matter of the consequences.

  759. Ed Carson

I think he may have thought so but I don’t think he knew how to truly love anyone but himself.

  760. Dennise Pendergrass

I think he tried to, until he became her familiar. Although, I think he’s a borderline sociopath, so try is the operative word.

  761. justin p

He’s a con man he only pretended to love her in order to use her to get the things he wanted. It may have been love at the bsigning until he found out she wouldn’t break the law to help him. Then it was all about use an abuse her

  762. David Buchanan

I think Nick loved Rachel but he loved power more. It became his passionate focus and in a sense power became his girlfriend. Power is jealous and doesn’t share well.

  763. Katrina Rosell

I think Nick loved the Rachel he met, the one that rescued him not just once, but twice. He loves the savior side of Rachel. Nick’s love is very selfish though. It’s shown in how he wants Rachel to be the one always giving and understanding without compromising himself in return.

  764. Demetrius

I want to believe that Nick wanted to love Rachel in as much as he could. I think he was just damaged somehow and that’s what caused he to be the way he was.

  765. Sally Johnstone

I think Nick loved Rachel as best he could. He was stunted.

  766. Jess

I think that Nick wanted to love Rachel but was lacking the knowledge to truly understand what being a Witch means. He is always going to be an outsider and never quite get that native perspective of Witch.

  767. Brittany

I think Nick loved the idea of who he thought Rachel was, but that’s more empty infatuation than love. Real love is freaking terrifying (at least at first), because you’re putting yourself completely in someone else’s hands and hoping and trusting that they won’t hurt you once you’ve made yourself vulnerable. I don’t think Nick was capable of that.

  768. Siobhán

I believe that Nick thought he loved her, but when the pressure was on he was really only in it for himself. Nick loves Nick.

  769. Jackie

I’m not sure Nick even knew what love for another person was. I think he liked what he got from Rachelust by making her think he loved her. In the end he’ll always love himself more than any person.

  770. Jacob Ellis

Love is an emotion that can only be defined by that person. He loved Rachel in his own way.

  771. No, Nick only saw her as a means to an end.

  772. As you said, in as much as he could. I believe he cared for Rachel in his own way but do not believe Nick could really love anyone.

  773. Ewa

I think Nick wanted to love Rache and maybe in his way he did, but it wasn’t a feeling that most of us would call a real love.

  774. I don’t think Nick truly loved Rachel, well at least when I read it I didn’t. I just thought that he was a really good actor, but maybe that’s just me being pessimistic.

  775. I think Nick loved RAchel inasmuch as he could love anyone but ultimately, Nick was about Nick. Everything else was a distant second.

  776. Amy

He thought he did, in his own selfish way.

  777. No. Nick only saw Rachel as a means to an end.

  778. Natalie C

I think he loved her as much as he could love anyone.

  779. Rachel

I Think He Loved What She Could Do For Him More Than He Loved Her. To Really Love Someone, You Have To Be Honest With Them. He never Seemed To Be With Her.

  780. I think Nick loved her as much as he was capable of loving anyone not Nick. Which sadly isn’t saying much, and doesn’t make him any less skeevy in the end.

  781. Dorothy

I think he thought he loved her, but when push came to shove, he put himself first. He’s hardly the first person to be selfish in a relationship, though…

  782. Krista

I think that at first he did love her (DWW) but it quickly turned. He is a twisted little man who doesn’t want to be human he wants to be a Sup and will use whomever he can just to get a taste of it. JMHO

  783. Frances

I want to say yes but his actions prove that he did not.

  784. Elise N

I think Nick certainly liked Rachel a lot. He liked the fun and the excitement and sex, and thought she was a female version of him. Sort of a Bonnie to his Clyde. But Nick is incapable of really loving anyone other than himself, because he could never put anyone or anything else before his own interests.

  785. Alissa

He wanted to love her, he was drawn to her strength and wanted to be a part of her life. I think he even thought he did love her, because he wanted what she could offer so badly. But like a true vampire, it was all take with him: take her soul , take her energy, take her life to make them his own. He loved her more than he could love any one else, but because he’s so inherently selfish, it ultimately wasn’t actually love, but a desire to possess. So sad.

  786. Nick….(with a hard K) I think Nick thought he might have loved Rachel, however, he was to selfish to really put emotion into the love. He wanted things from her that she (morally) could not give to him.

  787. Melissa Smith

Nick loved himself. He loved money and the thrill for the next still. Maybe in the beginning he may have tried to love Rachel, but the thrill of danger is his true love.
Thank you you are an awesome author.
    Love
    Melissa

  788. Nick was a weasel for sure, but I think he did have sincere feelings for her that got mixed up in his own agenda. People can definitely love someone in their own way, but still be selfish and weird about it. Some people either weren’t taught or just don’t have it in them to love unselfishly and with enough purity to let them go.

  789. Kelsey

I don’t think that Nick ever loved her. He was always out for himself to get what he wanted.

  790. Jinny

I think Nick did care for Rachel, and he probably thought he loved her, but I don’t think he really understands what it means to love someone.

  791. Megan

Did he really love her? No I don’t think so. Sure he might have cared for her and wanted to be with her, but I think it was more so the idea of her.

  792. Gary Phillips

I don’t think Nick was really capable of love. His version of love was a product of some deep seated rage/hatred. His loss…

  793. Megan

I think up until he decided to go for his own personal gain, Nick did love Rachel. The problem was that he loved himself way more than he could ever love Rachel. Once she figured that out, game over. Good riddance though, Nick never did sit right with me!

  794. mary

No i dont think ever loved rachel….i think he loved what she was and what he thought he could get from her …period.

  795. Michelle Chambers

I think Nick loved the idea that Rachel loved him. He maybe thought he loved her but when she no longer wanted him I think he was insulted a little. He is his biggest fan after all.

  796. Gary Phillips

don’t think he was actually capable of love. His version of love was too much a product of some deep rage. His loss…

  797. Jennifer Symonds

I think that Nick believes that he loves here but the only person that Nick really loves is himself.

  798. Ailsa Richardson

No I don’t think he loved her, I think he cared about her but was always out for himself in the end. Still shocked by how much he revealed about himself!

  799. Heather

I’d like to think so. He probably wouldn’t have ended up so angry with her if he didn’t.

  800. Pam

I don’t think Nick is capable of loving anyone but himself. He only got involved with Rachel for whatever he could get for himself from her.

  801. Jecika Shirah

i think Nick loved what Rachel was and the thought of having her as a girlfriend… nothing more… because to love someone you must have TRUST and HONESTY. and that’s something he never gave her

  802. Rhonda

I think he loved her in a selfish as long as it is convenient for me and I am the center of the relationship way.l think he was often confused as to why she would be upset for something he did at her expense if it benefited him. He never seemed to understand why she wouldn’t be on board with that and I think he was truly hurt by her not taking that from him. You can’t hate someone as fiercely as he did in the end unless you feel betrayed by someone you cared about. I also don’t think he is capable of loving any other way.

  803. Marna Martin

In Nick’s mind, everything he does is for the best possible reason. He loves Rachel utterly, until loving her no longer works for him. Then he sees it as circumstances tore them apart, or she turned on him, any excuse other than admitting his hand in it. He was pure and noble; obviously she wasn’t woman enough for him.

This insight brought to you be having been married to a sociopath. Makes it easy to recognize the traits.

  804. Lindsay

Kim, I think Nick thought he loved her, and that was enough for him. See, we all know that True Love will sacrifice anything and everything for the ones they love. So of course Nick didn’t have a True Love for Rachel and couldn’t give up his dreams of wealth and power for her. But I do think that it was the best he could do. If you’ve never experienced True Love before, then it’s easy to mistake a partial love for the real thing, and I think that’s what he was doing. After the focus incident, I think he felt betrayed by Rachel, turning his love into hatred, just as Rachel felt betrayed by him.

  805. Kaala myers

I think Nick thought he loved Rachel, but changed his mind when his selfishness came out

  806. rinib

I think he cared for her, but not really loved her. He seems too self centered to be able to truly love. And I think this is one of my more favorite covers :)

  807. Chrystal

Nick might have loved her, but he wasn’t “in love” with her. He loved “finding” things more, he was always searching for more…

  808. Jessica Hamilton

Nick? I think he felt felt something very strong and familiar, something in him that reminded him of of his childhood innocence but didn’t quite understand and mistaken for being in love love with Rachel. Even after the series I think he recognize this now and has coped with the fact that wasn’t being in love and and has hope for it in his distant future. That is if he gets that far ;-)

  809. Marcia Siehr

Just finished this book for the first time and already moved on to the next. The first time reading a new series is always so delicious;) I don’t believe Nick loved Rachel, because loving someone means you put them and their lives before your own desires. Nick was out for himself the entire time. I think Nick “loved” knowing Rachel had a soft spot for him, and since he was “into her” physically and liked her “witchy” lifestyle he figured he could have it all- hot babe, power, and the money & freedom his thief lifestyle could give him. Getting Rachel in the end would have just been the icing on the cake for him.

  810. Stacey Monks

i DON’T THINK HE CAN LOVE ANY ONE OVER HIMSELF.

  811. Haley

I feel as Nick had the option to love. Not only Rachel but himself. However, I do feel as if he was caught in a trap for the idea of love and power. These ideas leading him to hate the ones he thought he once loved.

  812. Penny

I think maybe Nick thought he loved her, but he was too worried about himself and what she could do for him. He wanted her power for himself. He loved himself a lot more.

  813. Steven Hall

I don’t think Nick was capable of love- he cared for her, sure, but loved her? nope.

  814. Brandy White

I think Nick truly loved Rachel…but by the time he realized it, he’d already messed up any chance he had with his selfishness.

  815. Yes, I think Nick loved Rachel in the beginning but that was quickly eclipsed by his greed and ambition.

  816. Dawna Immele

I do not believe he ever really loved her. I think he “thought” he did but only because she was of use to him. I really believe Nick is a sociopath and doesn’t truly know what love is.

  817. Cori K

I don’t think he loved her. I don’t think he’s capable of loving another person.

  818. Lisa Holland

Nick and love? He really doesn’t know the meaning of the word. When the going got tough, he got going … away. If he wanted love, Rachel could have shown him, but he did not give himself the chance.

  819. mudepoz

Eh. I don’t think Nick loves anything other than power. Unlike Kisten, who grew up and went from scary to protective, Nick just …ugh

  820. Janet MacDonald

Nick didn’t love her – he wanted to be her ( minus her moral code).

  821. Vici Teace

I don’t think he actually loved her. He liked her, and they had some good times together. But it wasn’t love. He loved her abilities and attitude, but not her.

  822. Jessica Wooldridge

I think Nick loved Rachel, as much as any egocentric power hungry person could. She was a means to an end first, then his emotions for her were somewhere following in the ether.

  823. Patricia

I think he really cared for her and possibly wanted to love her,to really love her,but his hunger for more magical knowledge and power got got the best of him, always hurting Rachel in the end.

  824. AndrewIslay

I don’t think Nick ever loved Rachel – he was grateful she saved him from the rat fights and hung around to see what he could get but that was all.

  825. Zochi

Yes I think he loved her but he loved himself more in the end.

  826. Did Nick ever love Rachel? That’s a really difficult thing to quantify. As much as he could, maybe. Nick is emotionally damaged. I think Nick cared for her, enjoyed her company and her attention, but always viewed her as someone who could help him achieve his own goals whether consciously or not. I think he believes he loves/loved her, but Nick’s world revolves around Nick. Love is less important to him than security and gain and no other person is quite real to him. For Rachel love is the most important thing in the world—she is willing to sacrifice her own wants and desires for those she loves to secure their happiness. The emotional investment is hardly the same. If you use Rachel’s definition of love, then no. By Nick’s standards (such as they are), yes.

  827. As much as I hate Crap for Brains, yes, I think he absolutely loved her. He showed it enough, I think. However, once she pulled that line through him, it scared him. Then he went away, coward that he is. Then thought she was dead, and moved on. But once he found out she was alive, it didn’t matter, because he was on “the job” and no one was going to get in the way of that. So yes, I do think that at one point he really did love her.

  828. Kharen H.

Nick is a pretty selfish man, but in his own way, I think he did love Rachel inasmuch as he could love anyone beyond his own gain. I think it had a lot to do with how she accepted him despite all the things she knew he was into.

  829. Definitely not. He may think so but he isn’t capable right now.

  830. Tess

Nick was a Stinker! If he loved her, he loved playing with Demons more…

  831. Yanina

I believe Nick was in love with Rachel, but he always loved himself more.

  832. I DO think he loved her…in his own way. His love wasn’t enough. He is more selfish and self-preserving to love anyone else other than himself too much. Product of his environment?? Maybe. More than likely, he is just a man — an egotistical con artist who prefers to use his skills for stealing, etc, rather than using them for good or even as a money maker. Does he enhance the story line? Oh YEAH! Love to hate Nick, I really do, mostly because I’ve dated someone like him. Hell, we all probably have. He served his purpose, for the most part, but there is always that ONE person (only one if you are lucky) who will throw you under the bus to save themselves. Nick is that person. We know his character flaws, and we can expect him to always do what will serve HIM the best. I also think, because of the way he just IS, that his “love” for Rachel quickly turned to hate, as it so often does. He wanted her to BE what he wanted and she just wasn’t/isn’t. AND she is more powerful than he. THAT can’t be tolerated in his psyche. So instead of giving her at least the respect she deserves, he’s a dick. Instead of kicking his ass or killing him, Rachel repeatedly shows grace, dignity, mercy and forethought in keeping him alive. Long answer, but I love these books. Y’all have a GREAT day! ~Jane~

  833. Leann

I think Nick did love Rachel, but loved himself more.

  834. danielle ham

I do believe that Nick loved her as much as he could. Sadly I believe his love and need for power succeeds any other wants in his life.
Getting excited, it’s getting closer to tour time!
    Enjoy monday!

  835. Kim

I think Nick thought he loved Rachel…unfortunately his kind of “love” was what she could do for him…

  836. Sandy S

    In his own twisted way.

  837. christine rickel

I don’t think he ever loved her, just used her for her powers.

  838. I think Nick love Rachel, maybe not much. He used her because of her power and in the end he was jealous and scary of Rachel. She get what he wanted, the power of the Demons,

  839. Val Ed

I think Nick did love her. He loved that he could keep using her when talking to Al He loved that she could perform certain magics for him that he could not. He loved that she would drop everything and pull his butt out of trouble. What he didn’t love was Rachel not doing what he wanted anymore.

  840. don blackburn

I think he may have loved her but he loves himself more. Maybe if he wasn’t obsessed with power and she wasn’t a witch they may have had a chance lol.

  841. Dominique Z

Yes, I think he did. But his own personal gain got in the way. Thank God!

  842. TJ

I think Nick believed he loved her but his idea of love wasnt really love. If he did he wouldn’t have been so reckless with his and her life. The only thing he really loved is money and power.

  843. Susan Stephney

I think he loved her as much as an addict can love. Power is an addiction, too.

  844. Michele Contreras

No, how can he ever truley love a mark

  845. For Nick, in as much as he was able, yes he did love her.

  846. Lauren

I don’t think Nick ever loved Rachel, at least not for who she really is as a person not just the witch he could manipulate.

  847. I believe Nick trule loved Rachel in his own way.

  848. I think Nick did love Rachel once, in his own way. I believe he got caught up in the idea of power and lost himself. Love and Hate are passionate emotions. I don’t believe he could have hated her so much in the end, if he hadn’t loved her in the beginning.

  849. Tracie Wood

I think Nick loved the idea of loving Rachel. She was like a shiny one one of a kind toy only he could control (so he thought) and play with. When he found out he couldn’t control her, he got scared. Stupid Nicky.

  850. Nick loved Rachel as much as he was able – he was much too
Narsacistic – nick always came first in all of his decision making processes

  851. Nick, poor Nick. I don’t think that Nick knows how to love anyone including himself. He was attracted to Rachel for what she could provide him with. I think he cares for Rachel, but no, didn’t love her. He loved her power, her magic and her sense of what is right. He’s like a moth attracted by the flame with Rachel.

  852. lesley rohner

I thought at first that they were the perfect couple, but as the books go on i think Nick could only love Nick. I do believe he believed he loves/loved her

  853. I think Nick believed he loved her but in reality he loved what she could provide him. Power, success and money. When he realized there were things she wouldn’t sacrifice for his sake, he betrayed her. I still think he should have received a better punishment.

  854. I think he liked her, but he liked power and his way of life more.

  855. Rhonda Beyer

I do think that Nick loved Rachel in the only way he was able. I never loved him though I was so glad when he was gone. Thanks for the giveaway! !!

  856. Dawn

I think he loved her as much as he could, but he expected her to love him more.

  857. shirley mccollum

No I think nick only loved himself and what he could gain from rachel.

  858. Irene Mikhaylova

I think Nick loved Rachel in his own twisted way, when she was useful to him. And I guess he was upset when he learnt that she died during boat accident. But when she crossed him – I think he was bewildered that she managed to do it and couldn’t believe it :)

  859. Susan Gardner

Unfortunately, I don’t believe he ever loved her ~ not as I would define love anyway. He was grateful for her helping him escape the rat fights and then turning him back into a witch ~ and that started the relationship…but, he quickly changed to wanting more power and using Rachel’s problems with the demons to help him get it. In the end, he may have felt slightly guilty for using her ~ but, not enough to give up his schemes.

  860. I don’t think he loved her, he was in it for the power

  861. Linda

I think he loved her as much as he possibly could, but no one stand a chance against the love for himself *shakes my head*
Happy Monday! =) Can´t wait for my t-shirt!
    //Linda

  862. Nope. I don’t think Nick ever loved Rachel. He felt he owed her and enjoyed using her (what he called “love”) but there wasn’t any love in it because from the first time he knew her he was selling pieces of her to demons for his benefit.

  863. Sarah R

I think that the love that Nick had for Rachel was his own twisted form of love. Maybe in the beginning before he started becoming a corrupted individual, the love that he had was true and innocent. But after all that happened I think that his love was twisted, and Rachel became something else to him, more of a tool or a way to get what he wanted.

  864. Indy

My favorite book!!! I’m not sure Nick is really capable of love – other than for money. I think in his mind, he loved her, but its not what most people would call love. So, I’d have to agree that he loved her as much as he could.

  865. Jacqueline Böge

Difficult Question….i think that there was a time were he loved her, but then he lost his love and got frightened of her…but he didnt show that in any time…he dont wanted her to go away from him he needed her in many ways for his own way…. he tried to make she as a thief too…he dont know where the line between wrong or right is….

  866. Nick,,,,Nick,…Nick… Well I think that he loved Rachel in a certain way but really was out for himself. He twisted what he felt into a benefit for him. And then used it against her so many times.

  867. Debi

Maybe, but I never cared for him…he did turn out to be a weasel.

  868. Wendy W

I think he loved her for what she could do for him. Perhaps that’s all he’s capable of.

  869. Renee Meister

I think Nick did love Rachel, but only in the way he believed was love, not what other people view as love. He loved her for her powers, I think, but later he shows how “disgusted” he is with her inabilityor unwillingness to hurt others with her power, the way he would have. unfortunately, it’s not the love Rachel needed at that time.

  870. Tina Knight

I don’t think Nick ever loved Rachel. He only loved what he thought she could do for him. And once she stopped helping him he betrayed her.

  871. Paula

I don’t think he ever loved her, he saw an opportunity and took it

  872. Ann P

I think he did at first, as much as he could in his warped mind.

  873. rachael constant

i feel like the only one who hasn’t read these books. awesome covers!
    xxxx

  874. Laura Cheedie

I think Nick is like many men out there. He used Rachel in the very beginning to suit his needs. This became even more evident in Fist Full of Charms. I honestly don’t think Nick loved Rachel at all and I think Rachel fell for him in the beginning because he helped her at out a difficult situation. Also think of it this way if it wasn’t for Nick, Rachel would have never got mixed up with Al and might not have gone through the hell she has endured.

  875. Rob & J

As much as he could – in a what can you do for me way. He’s just not a “good guy.”
Loved this cover- it’s one of my favorites- and as said infinite times and ways before – my least favorite of the audio books. Kudos to your publisher for bringing back Ms Gavin.

  876. I think that Nick loved her as much as he was capable of loving a person, though I don’t believe that his definition of love really stands up to how the average person would define it.

  877. I think that Nick did have some genuine emotion for her…but would have been happy to fake some if he didn’t. What he felt for Rachel could never really be called love because he would always put what he ultimately wanted above her. Maybe if she was just a random girl he had met who never had anything to do with his plans he could have loved her, but I don’t think it was ever a possibility because of who she was.

  878. K. Miller

Nick doesn’t seem to know how to love anyone, including himself, so there’s no way he loved her. What he loved was playing the white knight and when that was no longer needed, he did what he does best…he bailed

  879. It is really hard for me to be partial to Nick. He is one of the Hollows characters that I truly dislike. I don’t believe he ever truly loved Rachel. You would not be able to do all the things he does to a person you are suppose to love.

  880. Katie

Love, love, LOVE this series. In a market flooded with vampire stories, these truly stand apart.

I think he loved as any immature man err boy could. He loves himself and chance for personal gain so much more.

  881. Once I would have said that NIck loved Rachel. However, over time I think Nick is a total tool and probably always was.

  882. christina

I think nick cared about her but only truly loved himself.

  883. Magda Preciado

Well…maybe in a way he did at the beginning, but then what he actually did love was the power she truly had as a demon.

  884. He thought he loved her, but it was more about possession than love. He wanted her to be his. Sure, he “protected” her, but for his own reasons.

  885. Mandy

Nick is all about Nick…but I think in his own mind he cared…even if he is rat.

  886. Rhys

I think he really believed that he loved Rachel, and he might have in his own way, but his downfall was that he couldn’t be selfless about it.

  887. No, I do not think Nick loved Rachel ever. He might have liked her, but I think he’s too full of himself to love anyone but himself.

  888. Charlene Brasuell

No I don’t ever think he did, I think he thought he did so he wouldn’t feel so bad about using her for her magic and what he could learn from her.

  889. I do not think Nick loved her for herself, only for what he thought she might be able to do for him.

  890. Melodie

I believe Nick loved Rachel, at least at first…. but the he learned about the magic world, the more obsessed he got with Rachel and what she could do. In the end he was only looking out for himself and would have sold his own mother to get what he wanted….

  891. Gavi

I think that he truly believed he loved her. I do not think he really knew how to love. He’s a user and uses anyone even the people he ‘loves’

  892. Jeremy Boatman

I think he did deep down but he in the end knew his chosen lifestyle would never be accepted by her. In the end he knew he couldn’t change and neither could she.

  893. Sandra Sepulveda

I believe he loved her at one time. As much as he could anyway but he has shown no loyalty and it would never have lasted even if he hadn’t become her familiar.

  894. I do think he loved inasmuch as he is able to love anyone. It’s just that for Nick love isn’t his most powerful motivator. I think power motivates him far more than love.

  895. Jennifer Sellek

Yes, in Nick’s twisted, self-centered way, he did “love” Rachel. I use quote marks because I don’t think Nick had any love for himself and if you can’t find love for yourself how can you really love another person. The only love I think Nick truly felt was for his things, getting away with his schemes and knowledge. Albeit a false love, but love for him nonetheless.

  896. Diane P.

Nick’s focus is one hundred percent on Nick. He never loved Rachel, there wasn’t enough room. When Rachel was useful to Nick, he cared for her in a “this is useful to me” kind of way. But the trade with Al, and how easily he could get angry with her and leave her, just proves that she was a tool to further his goals.

  897. Natasha

Yes. He’s just has lots if issues.

  898. Stephanie

NO! I don’t think it is until later we learn truly the depths of Nick. And I don’t want to go into how much I and deeply Nick really disappoints me, over and over. So I believe he has always had this inner flaw of only thinking of his own ‘self preservation’, and that is putting it kindly as I possibly can. Although, I’m not good with the type of ‘betrayer’ I see him as. I can love a bad guy from here to eternity, just not one who has no scruple of ANY kind. He has NONE. He is fake. If I were to extend generosity toward him, I’d say he doesn’t know himself yet and that is why he is still learning how to be a person who can be real, “feeling/caring” with anyone or about anybody, but himself. That would be generous because I do not forgive easily. HA!

  899. No he did not love her. Deep down in his most secrete heart he knew he never did. He was in love with the idea of being in love. That is all.

  900. In his own twisted way he loved her…for about a minute!

  901. Jenny

I think Nick loved Rachel in as much as a person like him could love another. Nick truly believed he loved Rachel, but he hid things from her, like how he made his money and what his plans were. I think Nick expected her to think and feel the same way as he did if she loved him back. When she didn’t want him to have the focus and didn’t approve of what he did for money, he thought that meant she had never loved him. So he acts like she betrayed him. It was the first time Rachel actively prevented him from doing/getting what he wanted, and ends up being the beginning of his hatred of her.

  902. Marcie

I think Nick did love Rachel, but not the way that most people love. He loved what she could for him especially with the demons.

  903. I don’t think he ever loved her. For him, the only person he loved was himself – so many times he did things that cost Rachel, and just for his own self. If he really loved her, he wouldn’t have done that.

  904. Donna Murphy

I think at the beginning, he did love her in his way. I think Rachel was too strong of a woman for him. I’m not saying strong is bad, just the opposite. I can’t stand weak women. I think Nick would need someone that “needs” him. Rachel may have wanted him but she never needed him.

  905. RJ F

    I think he loved her

  906. Jen

I believe he thought he loved her, but I don’t think Nick really knows how to. He is too wrapped up in what he wants and doesn’t know how to put someone in front of his wants.

  907. Heya,

I don’t think Nick can love anything that doesn’t give him money or power. Well, maybe he saw the potential in Rache, so he loved her power. But I don’t think he’s really capable of the feeling. Thank goodness he left ;)

    amy

  908. Samantha Mae Perkins

I think he loved her in his own twisted way. He loved her power and what she could do.

  909. Lunanescence

Does Nick love Rachel? Hmm. I think he loves her as musch as he is able to love her, for a little while. I don’t really think he knows how to love Rachel the way Rachel loves the people in her life. Plus, I think his priorities in life put emotion/love/loyalty/friendship lower than ambition/financial stability/power. His priorities suck.

  910. Joanne P

I think he may have loved her as much as he is capable of love.

  911. Angela Mink

I think he did love Rachel, but I don’t think it was pure, shiny love. Certainly not one to stand the test of time or write home about.

  912. Khali

I think nick did love Rachel in his own way. It just wasn’t enough to balance out the obsession he has with magic.

  913. nope, hes a selfish guy! love the series….. My son got me into these

  914. Gail Malley

I think Nick used Rachel the entire time. He snuggled in close just to get to what knowledge she knew and if course the focus. Nick is one of those men who is trash and needs to be disposed of properly.

  915. Bonnie Boeck

I think Nick loved Rachel’s power and that was it

  916. Amy Anderson

How could he NOT love Rachel? As much as I despise Nick now, I really wanted someone for Rachel who “got” her…sigh.

  917. Claudia

Nick loved her for what she could bring him. What he could use her for. To him she was just a tool he could use for his own gain, But i think that’s all nick was actually capable of really. I mean look what he did to Jenks boy.

  918. I think that Nick did love Rachel as much as he knew how or could even love someone else. He’s too messed up to truly love anybody though, not even himself.

  919. I think the dirtbag grew up hard and knew that she’d be a ticket to alot more. He used and manipulated her as far as he could take it. And then some, at least until she finally opened her eyes to his type of person. I’m pretty sure if Al had told him to, he would have thrown his mom under a bus.

Book cover: I love the open back look. There aren’t enough of that in fashion today.

  920. Diane P

I think Nick was always looking out for himself and did not love her at all.

  921. No I do not think Nick loved Rachel. Love is a selfless emotion. I do not think Nick has the character to be selfless.

  922. LuAnne

No, Nick did not love Rachel. Nick manipulated Rachel to get what he truly loved—–money.

  923. mellissa braus

Yes, Nick loved Rachel. The kind of anger (almost hate) that he feels for her now could have only been borne of loving someone and feeling like they betrayed you in some way. Granted, he’s always looking out for himself (self-preservation) but in his way he very much loved her. He grieved for her when he thought she died, and left everything behind to do pretty much a suicide run for the focus. The animosity he now holds towards her just shows how much he really cared for her, and I think it might have even surprised him.

  924. jayne

I think he loved what she could do. Never really loved her the way she deserves to be. But glad that stinky relationship is over and she can move on to bigger and better possibilities (trent) lol

  925. Melissa Acquaviva

I think Nick love Rachel in his own way but it wasn’t real or deep emotional love like Rachel felt. I think he thought of her as less than himself at first but when she proved she was stronger it grew to spite.

  926. Megan Parisi

I believe nick is incapable of love, but he thought he loved Rachel.

  927. Kimberley McCluskey

Personally after reading all the Hollows books, I think that Nick “loved” the idea of being in love with Rachel. Deep down his greed for money, and willing to do anything for it got it in the way! Nick was furious when he discovered Rachel had switched the focus, I think it was more to do with what he lost in it, the money he would of gotten for selling it. I doubt he could of stopped his greed for money to settle and have a proper relationship with Rachel though.

  928. Lynn Kay Nienas

As close as he can get is probably the most accurate way to describe it. Reminds me that it’s a thin line between love and hate.

  929. Jennifer Hornberger

I think Nick did love Rachel but it turned to envy then anger when she proved herself to be better than him in so many ways

  930. I think Nick loved Rachel in his mind. He loved power and greed more.

  931. Stephanie R.

Nope. She was a powerful ally that he hoped to manipulate and IF he could have he would have made her like him. I would love to know what twisted little Nicky so thoroughly.

  932. I really WANTED Nick to love her at first…but no. I don’t think he COULD love her.

  933. Kathy Vickers

I think Nick thought he loved Rachel, but he has no clue what love is. Or could he love Rachel the way she needs … love and respect.

  934. I don’t think Nick was capable of love, maybe not even self love. He may have wanted Rachel, admired and/or feared her, but no narcissist can really love another. That would require some degree of giving up of self to the loved one and he could never do that. I’m not sure he isn’t a sociopath.

  935. kmerchant

Kim’s books are the most realistically yet unrealistic books ever. They suck you in, make you feel like the character, and all this stuff is happening to you too.

  936. I think Nick actually does still love Rachel. But love is a tricky and fickle mistress who means different things to different people.

  937. Chris Dewitt

Nick was too selfish to love anybody else but himself. He never loved Rachel he loved what Rachel could do to get him further along.

  938. Jessica Blakeney

I don’t think Nicky really COULD love her. He wanted the money and power. He sold information about her the entire time they were together to Al and other demons! He’s scummy. He never truly loved her, he just loved the idea of her.

  939. Jordyn

I think Nick did love Rachel as much as he could. Being the selfish greedy person that he is it is impossible for him to live her more than himself or enough to over power his greed but I do think he loved her in his way and I think he believed that he truly could stop for her even though we all know that would never happen.

  940. Janice Bragg

Yes, I believe he loved her!

  941. Lisa Ott

I don’t think Nick “loved” Rachel. I think he loved the idea of all that was possible being Rachel’s boyfriend. I think he would have eventually tried to get Rachel to “come to his dark side”. I am glad she is done with him!

  942. Staci

I don’t think Nick ever truly loved anyone but himself.

  943. Josh Fleming

Yeah I think Nick loved her, but in his own selfish way, it’s hard for selfish people to love the way we perceive love is suppose to be given

  944. Does Nick love anyone but himself? Does he even love himself? I have to wonder if the only reason he dated her in the first place was to garner information about her that he then sold to demons. This doesn’t really sound like love to me. Although, I suppose in his sick mind, maybe it was. Glad Rachel is shed of him!

  945. Geoffrey Sullivan

No I don’t think nick loved Rachel at all it was all a ploy

  946. Nici

No I’m pretty sure he never truly loved Rachel. Maybe he thought “that’s love” until he found out he loves himself and shiny things a lot more.

  947. Aimée Laibida

I think Nick loved Rachel as much as he was able to love another person.

  948. Amy

I feel Nick did and maybe does love Rachel. Everyone’s definition of love is different. For Nick love is not a priority. I think he began to resent Rachel. Resent leads to hate. I feel you can only truly hate what you know and love. I feel he keeps his distance from her and uses her to protect himself. He is a weak person.

  949. Wow, I haven’t thought about Nick in what seems like forever. I’m pretty sure there was a powerful emotion involved with that, but I doubt he ever truly loved her. Someone as twisted as he was doesn’t ever love, they just see what is available to use, and exploit it that way.

  950. I think he did but he always love him self more.

  951. I think that Nick thinks he loved Rachel, but he was unable to be a moral equal when Rachel is so black and white about everything. Plus, the amount of magic she used made her very powerful, and I think it made him feel inadequate. He was justified in his mind that he was trying to gain knowledge, power and money so in his eyes he could be an equal to Rachel, but those are important to him, not her.

  952. Erin

I think that he loved her in the beginning when he could delude himself that she was like him. After she showed him that she was very different and he could never be as good as her and couldn’t protect her like she could him that he couldn’t deal with that and he fell out of love.

  953. Tiffany s

I don’t think ever really loved Rachel I believe he wanted to love her because she had saved his life and vice versa, he really shows it after Rachel pulled the line through him and all the distance he put between them and even when he left so he could get away from her. I personally feel nick was a big slim ball and that Rachel was much better without him.

  954. Heather C

I think Nick is a self enterprising individual. His focus on Rachel spawned from the fact that they had similar goals/interests. When they were no longer aligned or in Nick’s best interest he skedaddles on down the road with a pixie in tow.

  955. Candice

I think he cared for her as much as it was possible for him to do so. Love and hate are yin and yang.. you can only hate (or dislike) a person as much as you care for them to begin with.

  956. Nick… I think he loved the *idea* of Rachel. Loved a few certain things, in his own messed up way. But as soon as he believed he wasn’t in control of certain aspects of their relationship/her life he freaked out and we saw a LOT more of the real Nick.

  957. Brianne Byers

I think he loved her, to a degree, but obviously not enough to give up being a thief, and by the time they meet up again in Mackinaw, I think he’s just using her.

  958. My opinion is, in his own mind, he believed he loved her.

  959. I imagine Nick loved maybe even still loves Rachel in his own damaged way. She gave him a stability he couldn’t give himself. He was certain he steal a great life and everything would be okay for the two of them whereas she was willing to earn a decent life for herself and those she loved. Like so many people in real life he placed the failure of their relationship on her and her inability accept his schemes and abuses.

  960. Jodi I

I think nick tried to love her, I believe that he really cared for her at the begining but as time went on it became more useful to him just to keep pretending so he could use info about her and her connections to get what he wanted for himself.

  961. jennver

I don’t think Nick knows what love is. He is a selfish, power hungry man who’s use for people only extends as fas as their value to him. I think he wanted to love her though.

  962. Peggy Hackett

I don’t think Nick could be “in” love anyone besides himself.
